Barnes Switch (also known as Barnes) is an unincorporated community in Trinity County, Texas, United States. The community is located at the junction of Texas State Highway 19 and Farm to Market Road 1893. Barnes Switch was formed around a railroad switch on the Waco, Beaumont, Trinity and Sabine Railway and was named for the physician S. E. Barnes. As of the early 1990s, it had a population of 15. [1]
Samuel E. Barnes attained a notable record as a merchant, cotton factor, banker, real estate broker, and churchman. [2] Parents, Mississippi natives Jacob Pope Barnes and Elizabeth Ann Rankin moved to Texas in 1866 and came to Trinity in 1872. Jacob opened a mercantile store in partnership with Frank Lister and was serving as county treasurer at the time of his death. Widowed at age 43, Elizabeth reared nine children and operated the mercantile store with the help of her eldest son, Samuel Edward (1861-1914). [3]

Thomas Freeman McKinney was a trader, merchant, and a co-founder of Galveston, Texas. Living with his family in the western states of Kentucky, Illinois, and Missouri, he started trading in Mexico in 1823. The next year he settled in Stephen F. Austin's Colony, claiming a headright to Texas land while continuing his trading activities. He established a partnership with Samuel May Williams in 1834, and they operated a warehouse at the mouth of the Brazos River. The McKinney & Williams partnership loaned money and vessels to the cause of Texas independence. After Texas gained independence from Mexico, McKinney co-founded Galveston, Texas, and the McKinney & Williams company set up a warehouse and dock in the new town. McKinney later sold his share of the McKinney & Williams partnership and retired to Travis County, Texas.

Its population grew, and following the American Civil War, the town boasted a mercantile store, saloon, blacksmith shop, cotton gin, and an elementary school. Its U.S. post office opened in 1870. Albuquerque, which was actually found to be in Gonzales County, is today a ghost town
