The Battle of Point Pedro 2007 was a naval battle that occurred on June 19, 2007 near Point Pedro, [1] Jaffna, Sri Lanka. The battle took place when Sri Lankan Navy patrol boats were attacked by a group of Tamil Tiger patrol boats off the shore of Point Pedro.

Prelude

The sea Tigers were the naval branch of the Liberation Tamil Tigers of Eelam (LTTE), who fought against the Sri Lankan Navy for independence until 2009. The parties had multiple open water skirmishes over the duration of the war, the most notable clashes taking place in water corridor between Point Pedro (Jaffna) and Trincomalee city, as the Tigers were in control of the city at one point in the war and frequented the route to conduct attacks on Naval targets such as the bombing of SLNS Sooraya and SLNS Ranasuru. A previous battle at Point Pedro in 2006 took place when patrol boats escorting a 700 man naval troop transport came under attack by Tiger patrol boats and a suicide craft, aimed at sinking the transport vessel. The attack was eventually repelled through Lieutenant Commander Edirisinghe ramming the suicide craft with his patrol boat causing the explosion and the remaining LTTE boats to retreat. [3]

Attack

The battle began when the Sri Lankan Navy attempted to recover a patrol boat that had drifted out into Tiger controlled waters. [4] Fighting erupted when 24 Tiger patrol boats ambushed the government forces as they reached the drifting boat. The Navy repelled the attack through the use of Mil Mi-24 helicopter gunships and the patrol boats dispatched initially. The Sri Lankan government estimated rebel losses at 40 men killed and nine patrol boats destroyed. [5]

Aftermath in 2008

The following year in November 2008, chief petty officer K. G. Shantha was killed in action, after he rammed his arrow-class patrol boat against a suicide craft that had aimed to detonate when in proximity of a group of naval vessels off the shore of Point Pedro. [6] The attack was successfully thwarted and Shantha was awarded the highest Sri Lankan military award, the Parama Weera Vibhushanaya. This information however, was contested as the LTTE claimed to have successfully sunk two naval vessels. [7]

A group of SLN attack boats was escorting a troop transport, the MV Pearl Cruise II which was carrying 710 soldiers for the city of Jaffna which had been under siege for the previous six years.

Ultra Fast Attack Craft

The Ultra Fast Attack Craft, commonly known as the UFAC or Colombo class, is a Sri Lankan ultra high-speed class of patrol boats meant for a variety of naval missions from off-shore coastal patrol missions to high-speed, high-maneuver littoral warfare. They are based on the Shaldag boats made by Israel.

The MV Uhana was a Sri Lankan merchant vessel that was subjected to a suicide attack in June 2000 while being escorted to Jaffna by the Sri Lankan Navy. A speedboat loaded with explosives positioned itself next to the Sri Lankan vessel, near Point Pedro, before blowing itself up. According to Rohitha Bogollagama, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, the Tamil Tigers were behind the attack. He compared the attack on the Uhana to al Qaeda's attack on the USS Cole, four months later. He suggested that al Qaeda and the Tamil Tigers learned techniques from one another.

The 4th Fast Attack Flotilla is a force element flotilla of the Sri Lanka Navy. The flotilla's mission is to provide heavily armed and fast patrol boat capability to counter sea tiger movements along the coast and to protect naval and civilian shipping from sea tiger suicide crafts.

Attack on Galle Harbour was a suicide attack carried out by 15 Sea Tigers of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on the commercial Galle Harbour and Sri Lanka Navy base SLNS Dakshina in the tourist town of Galle in southern Sri Lanka.

Lieutenant Commander Jude Lakmal Wijethunge, was a officer in the Sri Lanka Navy. He was a proud product of Ananda Central College Elpitiya. As a Lieutenant, he commanded the Dvora-class fast patrol boat P458 of the 4th Fast Attack Flotilla. He was posthumously awarded the Parama Weera Vibhushanaya, Sri Lanka's highest military award for gallantry, for his actions on 30 March 1996 in defending a Navy transport from a Sea Tiger attack. As part of an escort to the transport vessel, Wijethunge fought off repeated attacks until his craft had suffered severe damage including to its engines, and all his crew were incapacitated. Noticing a Sea Tiger suicide boat, Wijethunge maneuvered the P458 to intercept it causing the suicide boat to ram into his vessel. The resulting explosion destroyed both vessels, thereby saving the transport vessel which was the target of the suicide boat. Two members of his crew were later rescued from the waters. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in addition to receiving the Parama Weera Vibhushanaya, and is the first naval officer to receive the award.

K. G. Shantha was a senior non-commissioned officer in the Sri Lanka Navy. He was killed in a sea battle against the Sea Tigers, the naval wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, in the seas of northern Sri Lanka. He posthumously received the Parama Weera Vibhushanaya, the country's highest award for gallantry, and is the second recipient of the medal from the navy.

Anthony Rohan Amarasinghe, RSP, VSV, USP, psc, MNI, SLN was a distinguished Sri Lankan admiral. He served as the Director of Naval Rapid Action Boat Squadron, Director Naval Operations, Commander Southern Naval Area (ComSouth), Director General Personnel and Training, Commander North Central Naval Area (ComNorCen), Commander Western Naval Area (ComWest) and Commander Eastern Naval Area (ComEast). He retired from the active service in 2014 upon reaching a mandatory retirement age of 55 for Sri Lankan Armed Forces Personnel. At the time of his retirement, he was the third most senior executive officer behind Commander of the Navy and the Chief of Staff.

SLNS Ranaviru was a Shanghai-class fast gun boat of the Sri Lanka Navy, attached to the 3rd Fast Gun Boats Squadron.
