The battle of the San Lorenzo River was the first engagement between Paraguayan and Argentine forces in the Paraguayan War. The combat took place near the San Lorenzo River, in Argentina, on April 28, 1865 during the Corrientes Campaign and ended with the victory of the Paraguayans.
A Paraguayan cavalry regiment of 50 horsemen under the command of Lieutenant José de Jesús Martínez was surrounded by 400 well-equipped Argentine horsemen, close to the San Lorenzo river. After the Paraguayan commander's refusal to surrender, the Argentines began a series of attacks on the regiment, with the Paraguayans resisting and breaking the siege, managing to escape. The number of casualties on the Argentine side is not known. Paraguay had 4 riders killed and several wounded. [1]

The Battle of Estero Bellaco was one of the bloodiest battles of the Paraguayan War. The battle was fought on 2 May 1866 with the Paraguayan Army suffering 2,000 casualties among the dead and wounded. Likewise, 300 of their men were taken prisoner by the troops belonging to the Triple Alliance: Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. The allies lost nearly 2,000 men, mostly wounded, and the Uruguayan troops of General Venancio Flores - commanded by León de Pallejas - were severely decimated, accounting for the vast majority of allied deaths.

The Anglo-French blockade of the Río de la Plata, also known as Paraná War, was a five-year naval blockade imposed by France and the United Kingdom on the Argentine Confederation during the Uruguayan Civil War. It was imposed by the Royal Navy and French Navy in 1845 against the Río de la Plata Basin to support the Colorado Party in Uruguay's civil war, resulting in the closure of Buenos Aires to maritime commerce. The Argentine government, led by Juan Manuel de Rosas, refused to drop their support for the Uruguyan White Party, which supported Argentina's resistance to the blockade. Eventually, both Britain and France ended the blockade, signing the Arana-Southern Treaty in 1849 and 1850 respectively, which acknowledged Argentine sovereignty over its rivers.
