The Bayu-Undan to Darwin Pipeline, also known as the Bayu-Undan Gas Export Pipeline or Gas Export Pipeline (GEP) is a multi-diameter subsea gas export pipeline which transports dry gas from the Bayu-Undan field in the Timor Sea to the Darwin LNG plant at Wickham Point. [3]
Originally Phillips Petroleum Company had plans to design and build a dry gas export pipeline from Bayu-Undan to Timor-Leste. But in June 2001 it decided to send the gas to Darwin after failing to reach an agreement about fiscal, legal and tax arrangements with the East Timorese government. [4] The Gas Export Pipeline (GEP) formed part of Phase 2 of the Bayu-Undan Development project. For the first time in 2006 compressed dry gas was exported from the CPP through the subsea pipeline to Australia, where it was liquefied at the 3.71 million tonne per annum Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant. [5] [6] Prior to the construction and operation of the GEP the Bayu-Undan field was commonly referred to as the Bayu-Undan Gas Recycle Project. [7]
ConocoPhillips Pipeline Australia Pty Ltd (COPPA) was the original operator of the pipeline, until the sale of the asset to Santos which started in 2019. [8]
Most of the pipeline's total length of 502.6 km is made up of welded 26 inch diameter pipe, although closer to the Bayu-Undan Central Production Platform (CPP) the pipeline consists of flanged spools and a riser of 28 inch nominal diameter. There is a remotely-operated 28 inch subsea isolation valve (SSIV) close to the CPP. A transition flange denotes the change in diameter from 28 inch to 26 inch. [9]
The pipeline lies directly on the seabed from Bayu-Undan to the entrance into Darwin Harbour. Within Darwin Harbour the pipeline is installed in a trench below seabed level and is further protected from dragged or dropped anchors by a protective rock berm. Water depth within the harbour is typically less than 10 m deep and this zone is predominantly intertidal. Most of the linepipe used during the construction was factory-coated with concrete-weight-coating in order to provide pipeline stabilisation, thus restricting lateral movement of the pipeline whilst minimising movement of seabed material. [10]
A significant number of free-spans develop under the pipeline due to subsea currents and movement of seabed material. As a result grout bags are regularly installed by ROV in an attempt to restore support and to minimise the occurrence of vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) along the pipeline. [11] [12] [13] [14]
The subsea pipeline is also subjected to in-line inspection (ILI) using a magnetic-flux leakage intelligent pig. The pig is launched from the Bayu-Undan CPP facility in the Timor Sea and is retrieved at the pig receiver at Darwin LNG after transiting through the 502 km pipeline. [15] [16] A by-product of the pigging operation is iron oxide dust (from the internal walls of the pipeline at the welded joints and margins), laced with radioactive NORM, and BTEX from the production wells and process at Bayu-Undan. The water used to clean the pigging contractor's pigs is also contaminated with NORM. This pigging waste is stored at the Darwin LNG facility in various forms, including a collection of IBC. [17]

Commercial offshore diving, sometimes shortened to just offshore diving, generally refers to the branch of commercial diving, with divers working in support of the exploration and production sector of the oil and gas industry in places such as the Gulf of Mexico in the United States, the North Sea in the United Kingdom and Norway, and along the coast of Brazil. The work in this area of the industry includes maintenance of oil platforms and the building of underwater structures. In this context "offshore" implies that the diving work is done outside of national boundaries. Technically it also refers to any diving done in the international offshore waters outside of the territorial waters of a state, where national legislation does not apply. Most commercial offshore diving is in the Exclusive Economic Zone of a state, and much of it is outside the territorial waters. Offshore diving beyond the EEZ does also occur, and is often for scientific purposes.
A submarine pipeline is a pipeline that is laid on the seabed or below it inside a trench. In some cases, the pipeline is mostly on-land but in places it crosses water expanses, such as small seas, straits and rivers. Submarine pipelines are used primarily to carry oil or gas, but transportation of water is also important. A distinction is sometimes made between a flowline and a pipeline. The former is an intrafield pipeline, in the sense that it is used to connect subsea wellheads, manifolds and the platform within a particular development field. The latter, sometimes referred to as an export pipeline, is used to bring the resource to shore. Sizeable pipeline construction projects need to take into account many factors, such as the offshore ecology, geohazards and environmental loading – they are often undertaken by multidisciplinary, international teams.
The Anglia gas field, is a natural gas field in the United Kingdom's continental shelf of the Southern North Sea. It is located in blocks 48/18 and 48/19 about 60 km (37 mi) east of the Lincolnshire coast. The reservoir is located at a depth of approximately 8,500 feet (2,600 m) subsea. The field was discovered in February 1972. Detailed seismic and appraisal well work were conducted in 1984. The reservoir was estimated to have 235 billion cubic feet of gas in place.
The Amadeus Gas Pipeline is a bi-directional natural gas pipeline running north–south through the Northern Territory of Australia. Its southern extent is the Amadeus Basin gas fields west of Alice Springs. The Amadeus pipeline is owned and operated by APA Group, and regulated by the Australian Energy Regulator.
The Flotta oil terminal is a major crude oil reception, processing, storage and export facility on the island of Flotta, in the south of Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands. It receives and processes crude oil delivered by a subsea pipeline from the Piper, Claymore, Tartan and Golden Eagle platforms and associated fields. The terminal includes facilities for exporting stabilised crude oil by tanker.
The Viking gas field is a group of natural gas and associated condensate fields located under the southern North Sea about 85 miles from the Lincolnshire coast. The field was in production from 1972 to 2018.
The Lincolnshire Offshore Gas Gathering System (LOGGS) was a major natural gas collection, processing and transportation complex in the UK sector of the southern North Sea. It comprised five bridge-linked platforms about 118 km east of the Lincolnshire coast, which operated from 1988 to 2018.
The Pickerill and Juliet gas fields are decommissioned natural gas producing facilities in the UK sector of the southern North Sea. The fields are located about 66 km (41 mi) east of Spurn Head, Lincolnshire. Pickerill was in operation from 1992 until 2018 and Juliet from 2014 to 2018.
The A-Fields are natural gas reservoirs and gas production facilities in the southern North Sea; about 123 km east of Spurn Head, Yorkshire. The fields produced natural gas from 1988 to 2016.
The United Kingdom, Ireland and the Isle of Man are interconnected by five subsea and overland gas pipelines. These provide facilities for the transfer of natural gas from sources in Scotland and England to consumers in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and the Isle of Man.
