Beaver Dam (previously spelled Beaverdam) contained a post office from 1844 until 1901. [3] [4] A beaver dam on the nearby creek caused the name to be selected. [5]

It was named for the Polish general Tadeusz Kościuszko who served in the American Revolutionary War and then returned to Poland. The county seat is named for Warsaw, the capital of Poland.
