Beffcote is a hamlet [1] in the Borough of Stafford in Staffordshire, England. It is also midway between Newport and Gnosall. It also used to be sometimes named Befcote. [2]
Beffcote was first recorded in the Domesday Book as a part of the Hundred of Cuttleston in Staffordshire. [3] Its entry in the book quotes it as:
Beffcote was a settlement in Domesday Book, in the hundred of Cuttlestone and the county of Staffordshire. It had a recorded population of 5 households in 1086, putting it in the smallest 20% of settlements recorded in Domesday (NB: 5 households is an estimate, since multiple places are mentioned in the same entry).
— Open Domesday, Beffcote, This entry mentions multiple places: Beffcote; Congreve; Drayton and [Lower] Drayton; Dunston; [Lower and Upper] Cowley; Penkridge; Wolgarston.
The hamlet became part of the Manor of Plardiwick. [4] Before becoming part of the parish of Gnosall. [5]
A windmill named "Beffcote Mill" was constructed in the 1830s but was closed in 1888 when it became a dwelling. However, the mill was once again left derelict until it was restored in 1971 to a modern house and was renamed the "Coffee Pot" due to its shape. [6]
