Location

The Beginish house is located in Canroe (An Ceann Rua, "the red headland"), on the eastern part of Beginish Island, an island in Valentia Harbour. [6] [7]

History

The settlement at Beginish was inhabited by Vikings between the 9th and 12th centuries AD. [8]

Description

8 stone houses were associated with field systems, 8 cairns and 15 animal shelters. [9] [10]

A runic inscription was found used as lintel for a house, and a bone pin and comb were found. [11] [12]

Maccus mac Arailt was a tenth-century King of the Isles. Although his parentage is uncertain, surviving evidence suggests that he was the son of Aralt mac Sitriuc, King of Limerick. Maccus' family is known as the Meic Arailt kindred. He and his brother, Gofraid, are first recorded in the 970s. It was during this decade and the next that they conducted military operations against the Welsh of Anglesey, apparently taking advantage of dynastic strife within the Kingdom of Gwynedd.

Ivar of Limerick, died 977, was the last Norse king of the city-state of Limerick, and penultimate King of the Foreigners of Munster, reigning during the rise to power of the Dál gCais and the fall of the Eóganachta.
