Beki Adam (born 25 June 1966) is an English artist, journalist, broadcaster, farmer, former Buddhist nun and political activist. Her artwork is in private collections from Sussex to New York. She is exhibiting in Brighton, Sussex in May 2024. She was a parliamentary candidate for Mid Sussex in the 2015 general election. In 2018 Beki moved to Woodstock, New York and undertook an interior design project in a house built the same year as the famous festival. [1]

Journalism

Television

Adam worked as a journalist for print, before later moving into television and presented the BBC television show Top Gear during the 1980s. [2] Speaking of her time presenting the programme, "Back then there were only four television channels and at our height we were getting seven million viewers. I just remember looking down the camera lens and thinking I've got this huge audience and I'm talking about a car. It felt like such a waste.". [3]

Adam has published several books related to motoring, including Star Cars, Cobra and Ferrari V8. [4]

Research

Cannabis

Adams spent time investigating the prohibition of cannabis during the 1990s, resulting in her opening a cannabis cafe in Brighton in 1993. The cafe was shut down by police after 57 minutes. [5]

Fracking

Adam is an opponent of hydraulic fracturing, claiming that the UK has "other alternatives for UK energy supply and security, and, quite clearly, it is time to turn our undivided attention to them.". [6] Her independent research and opposition of fracking led her to become a contributor of evidence during the Infrastructure Bill committee debates in 2015. [7] She campaigned against the Infrastructure Bill in 2015 and suggested that it was the "arguably the most irresponsible piece of legislation ever to be laid before a British Parliament". [8]

Electric cars

Adam advocates electric car use: "The more people buy electric cars, the more the price will come down. I think today's politics are outdated and so is our view on technology. We need a 21st century vision." [9]

Spiritual life

After working as a journalist Adam travelled to Nepal and upon her return, she visited Samye Ling in Scotland and was ordained as a Buddhist nun. [10] During her seventeen years of ordination, she spent three years in the United States in silent retreat and taught meditation in Mid Sussex. [11] She was featured in a short documentary about her life as a nun titled 'Unusual Choices' filmed in 2009. [12]

Politics

Adam was a candidate in the 2015 British general election for the Mid Sussex constituency. As an independent candidate, she stood 'beyond party politics' without 'vested interests' for the benefit of a 'fair + safe society'. [13] She wished to offer "a viable option for people who have lost faith in the main political parties." were she elected. [14] She has never voted in an election. [15] She cites her previous experience in journalism and as a Buddhist nun as instrumental in leading her into a political career path, campaigning for a "safe and secure" society. [16] During campaigning, Adams spoke of her desire to launch a local bank providing small loans to local traders and small businesses, [17] with her aim in office to bring economic controls back to "support and protect people and place". [18]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ashurst Wood</span> Human settlement in England

Ashurst Wood is a village and civil parish in the Mid Sussex District of West Sussex, within the historic county of Sussex, England. It is 1 mile (2 km) to the southeast of East Grinstead, just off the A22 arterial road. In 2001, the population was 1,771, increasing to 1,833 at the 2011 Census. Ashurst Wood is within the High Weald Area of Natural Beauty and has a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) inside its boundaries. The village has a history of agriculture and farming, and contains a church, village hall, primary school, two public houses, a general shop, post office and several small business premises. There is an independent school on the boundary of the village, called Brambletye School, and a former one, Stoke Brunswick School, which closed in 2009. Bus routes run through the village with destinations of East Grinstead, Crawley, Haywards Heath, Tunbridge Wells and Brighton.

The Conservative A-List, also called Priority List, was a list of United Kingdom candidates drawn up by Conservative Central Office at the behest of David Cameron following his election as party leader in December 2005, aimed as a means of broadening the number of Conservative Members of Parliament, potential peers and MEPs from minority groups and women as well as other preferred candidates for candidature. Where the preferred forums for selection were held, at least two members from the list were put to every open primary, and where these were not held the A-list were recommended directly, particularly to the top target seats.

On 15 November 2012, a by-election was held for the UK House of Commons constituency of Corby. The election was held on the same day as by-elections in Cardiff South and Penarth and Manchester Central, the first direct election for the post of Mayor of Bristol, and the first Police and Crime Commissioner elections. Andy Sawford, the Labour Party candidate, won with 48% of the vote. The Conservatives' and Liberal Democrats' vote dropped significantly and UKIP came third with their highest-ever vote in a parliamentary by-election to that date.

Top Gear is a British motoring magazine and entertainment television programme. It is a revival by Jeremy Clarkson and Andy Wilman of the 1977–2001 show of the same name for the BBC, and premiered on 20 October 2002. The programme focuses on the examination and reviewing of motor vehicles, primarily cars, though this was expanded upon after the broadcast of its earlier series to incorporate films featuring motoring-based challenges, special races, timed laps of notable cars, and celebrity timed laps on a course specially-designed for the relaunched programme. The programme drew acclaim for its visual and presentation style since its launch, which focused on being generally entertaining to viewers, as well as criticism over the controversial nature of its content. The show was also praised for its occasionally-controversial humour and lore existing in not just the automotive community but in the form of internet memes and jokes. The programme was aired on BBC Two until it was moved to BBC One for its twenty-ninth series in 2020.

Alexandra Lesley Phillips is a British journalist and former politician. She served as a Brexit Party member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the South East England constituency from 2019 to 2020. She was the second candidate on the party's list for the constituency after party leader Nigel Farage. Phillips was previously head of media at the UK Independence Party (UKIP), which she left in September 2016. She was a GB News presenter between June 2021 and September 2022. In February 2023, Phillips joined Reform UK.

East Grinstead and Uckfield is a proposed constituency of the House of Commons in the UK Parliament. Further to the completion of the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, it will first be contested at the next general election.
