The Belau Omal Marathon is an annual marathon in Palau. The inaugural edition of the race was held on 4 June 2023.
As a program to stimulate tourism and strengthen Palau–Taiwan relations, coordination and preparation for the Belau Omal Marathon began in 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was delayed until 2023. In February 2023, Palauan officials visited Kinmen to observe its 23rd marathon event. [1] Taiwanese deputy foreign minister Roy Chun Lee announced in Taipei that Taiwan and Palau were jointly hosting the Belau Omal Marathon. Attendees of the news conference included Palauan vice president Uduch Sengebau Senior. [2]
As part of the initial campaign to promote the race, Taiwanese athletes such as former tennis player Lu Yen-hsun and former baseball player Tsao Chun-yang, as well as legislators, entered the race. [3]
The inaugural race was held on 4 June and drew about 600 runners from around the world. [4] It was Palau's first internationally certified marathon. [5] Finn runner Lauri Raunio won the men's segment with a winning time of 03:08:04 in the men's segment, and Taiwanese Liu Su-ya (劉素雅) finished first in the women's segment with a time of 03:35:03. [6]
Ahead of the 2024 race in September, the Belau Omal Marathon received its course certification as a World Athletics qualifying race. [7] Palauan and Northern Marianas officials signed a memorandum of understanding to co-promote the Belau Omal Marathon and the Saipan Marathon. [8]

Palau, officially the Republic of Palau, is an island country in the Micronesia subregion of Oceania in the western Pacific Ocean. The republic consists of approximately 340 islands and connects the western chain of the Caroline Islands with parts of the Federated States of Micronesia.
Thomas Esang "Tommy" Remengesau Jr. is a Palauan politician. In 2013, he was elected the ninth president of Palau and was re-elected to that office in 2016. Previously he served as the seventh president of the island nation from 2001 to 2009. He served as a Senator in the Palau National Congress between his two administrations. In sum, Remengesau was elected Vice-President of Palau in 1992 and 1996, then president in 2000, 2004, 2012 and 2016.
Hsiao Bi-khim is a Taiwanese politician and diplomat who has been the 13th and current vice president of the Republic of China since 2024, serving under President Lai Ching-te. She is Taiwan's first biracial vice president. She was the Taiwanese representative to the United States from 2020 to 2023, and formerly served as a legislator of the Legislative Yuan from 2002 to 2008 and again between 2012 and 2020.

Roman Tmetuchl was a Palauan political leader and businessman. He grew up in Japanese-controlled Palau and joined the Kempeitai, the Japanese secret police, during World War II. After the war, he became the leader of Palau's Liberal Party. He worked in the Congress of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands from 1964 to 1978 and advocated for Palau gaining a separate status from the rest of Micronesia. He became governor of Airai and engaged in three unsuccessful Palauan presidential campaigns. As a businessman, Tmetuchl led several construction projects for his business holdings and for the Palauan community, including the Palau International Airport and a Seventh-Day Adventist clinic.
The Belau National Museum (BNM), previously Palau Museum, is a museum in Koror, Palau. It is the oldest continuously run museum in Micronesia.
Chinese have been settling in Palau in small numbers since the 19th century. The early settlers consisted of traders and labourers, and often intermarried with Palauan women. Their offspring quickly assimilated with the local populace and generally identify themselves as Palauan. In recent years, Palau has seen a growing expatriate business community from Taiwan, after Palau established formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan in 1999.

Palau–Taiwan relations are the bilateral relations between the Republic of Palau and the Republic of China (Taiwan). Palau maintains an embassy in Taipei and Taiwan maintains an embassy in Koror City. Exchanges between the two nations range from agriculture, culture, education, fishery, medical services, tourism and water supply infrastructure. As of 10 January 2025, Palau is one of only 12 United Nations member states to have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
Faustina K. Rehuher-Marugg is a Palauan curator and politician who served as the State Minister of Palau from 2017 to 2021. She was Director of Belau National Museum from 1979 to 2009.
The 2021 Taipei Marathon was an Elite Label marathon race held in Taipei, Taiwan on December 19, 2021. It was the 25th running of the race.
Ann Kao Hung-an is a Taiwanese business executive and politician. She earned bachelor's and master's degrees from National Taiwan Normal University and National Taiwan University, respectively, before working as a researcher for the Institute for Information Industry. The institute subsidized Kao's doctoral study at the University of Cincinnati. She then worked for Foxconn until 2020, when she was elected to the Legislative Yuan as a member of the Taiwan People's Party (TPP). Partway through her legislative term, Kao was elected Mayor of Hsinchu during the 2022 local election cycle. On 26 July 2024, Kao was removed from office and withdrew from the TPP due to corruption allegations.
Emais Roberts is a Palauan politician and physician who has served as Governor of Peleliu since 2022. He previously served as the country's Minister of Health from 2017 to 2021 and led the response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Palau.
