Westhinder was a Wielingen-class frigate of the Belgian Navy.

Construction and career

Westhinder was launched on 30 March 1976 at the Cockerill Yards in Hoboken, Antwerp, and christened by Queen Fabiola of Belgium, on 20 January 1978. The patronage of the Westhinder was accepted by the city of Malmedy. Westhinder was the last ship in the Wielingen-class, and had pennant number F913.

It sustained damage during a NATO exercise off the coast of Norway. [1]

The Wielingen class is a class of four multi-functional frigates constructed for and operated by the Belgian Naval Component. In service from 1976 to 2008 with the Belgians, three of the class were sold to Bulgaria for service with the Bulgarian Navy beginning in 2004. The fourth, Westhinder, ran aground in 1988, was decommissioned in 1993 and was scrapped.

On 29 November 1990, the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 678 authorized the assembly of a multinational military coalition to liberate Iraqi-occupied Kuwait by "all necessary means" if Iraq did not withdraw its forces by 15 January 1991. Iraq failed to do so, and the coalition began an aerial bombardment against targets in Iraq and Kuwait on 17 January 1991. At this time, the coalition consisted of 42 countries and was spearheaded by the United States. Bulgarian frigate <i>Drazki</i>

Drazki is a Wielingen-class frigate of the Bulgarian Navy. Originally constructed for and operated by the Belgian Naval Component as Wandelaar, the frigate was designed as a platform capable of multiple uses as an escort during the Cold War in the North Sea and English Channel. The vessel uses weapons and sensor technology from NATO counterparts, which was one of the reasons the ship was acquired by the Bulgarian Navy in 2004. The frigate is currently in active service.
