Bellmark Records

Bellmark Records was a small American independent record label, based in Los Angeles, California. [1] It was formed in 1989 by Al Bell, who was one of the driving forces behind Stax Records, having been its chairman and CEO, and who had also been president of Motown Records. [1] The company's name was derived from the phrase "Al Bell Marketing". [2] Initially, Bellmark's records were distributed by CEMA, but the company switched to independent distribution in 1991. [1]

The Bellmark Records organization included the Bellmark Records label itself, which was intended to be used for gospel and spiritual music, as well as the Life Records imprint, which was intended for other genres of African-American music; however, the overall manufacturing and marketing arm of the corporation went by the "Bellmark" name. [1] Bellmark also had manufacturing, marketing, and distribution arrangements with a variety of labels, among them TMR Records. [3] Bell said in a 1994 profile that he wanted to emphasize "positive, fun, entertaining party music". [3]

The biggest hit records distributed by Bellmark were "Dazzey Duks" by Duice, on the TMR label, which was certified double platinum; "Whoomp! (There It Is)" by Tag Team, on the Life label, which was certified quadruple platinum; and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" by Prince, on the NPG label. [1] When Prince secured permission from Warner Bros. Records to release the latter song independently, Levi Seacer, president of Prince's NPG Records, arranged with Bellmark to distribute "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" as a single, as well as The Beautiful Experience , an EP of remixes of the song. [1] "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" was a #3 hit in the U.S. on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified gold. [4] "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" was Prince's last top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 of his lifetime. [5]

Some of Bellmark's gospel artists received Grammy nominations: The Rance Allen Group was nominated for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album for Phenomenon (1991), [6] Walter Hawkins and the Hawkins Family were nominated for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album for New Dawning (1996), [7] and the Edwin Hawkins Music & Arts Seminar was nominated for Best Gospel Album by a Choir or Chorus for All Things Are Possible (1996). In 1994, Bellmark collaborated with Walt Disney Records on an album titled Mickey Unrapped, which featured parodies of rap songs, among them "Whoomp! (There It Went)", performed by Tag Team with Disney characters. [9] This was the first time Walt Disney Records had collaborated with another record label on a non-soundtrack release. [9]

In 1997, Bellmark Records filed for bankruptcy. [10] As a result, DM Records, Inc. purchased substantially all of Bellmark’s assets for $166,000 in 1999. [10] [11]

In 2020, it was announced the Clark Sisters would be honored with the James Cleveland Lifetime Achievement Award at the 35th Annual Stellar Awards.

The Emotions are an American Grammy Award–winning soul/R&B vocal group from Chicago, Illinois. The group started out in gospel music but transitioned into R&B and disco music. The Emotions were named by VH1 as one of the 18 most influential girl groups of all time.

Jim Brickman American composer, recording artist

James Merrill Brickman is an American pop songwriter, pianist and radio host. Brickman has earned two Grammy nominations for his albums Peace (2003) for Best Instrumental, and Faith (2009) for Best New Age Album. He won a Canadian Country Music Award, a Dove Award presented by the Gospel Music Association, and was twice named Songwriter of the Year by SESAC. Billboard lists 22 of his albums reaching No. 1 on the New Age chart, and 16 of his songs reaching Top 10 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Four of his albums were certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Tag Team is an American hip hop/pop rap duo from Atlanta, Georgia. They are best known for their 1993 single "Whoomp! ", which has been featured in a number of advertisements, films, and TV shows. The duo is made up of Cecil Glenn and Steve Gibson.

Maurice White American musician, founder of Earth, Wind & Fire

Maurice White was an American singer, musician, songwriter, and record producer. He was the founder, leader, main songwriter, and producer of the band Earth, Wind & Fire, and served as the band's co-lead singer with Philip Bailey. Described as a "visionary" by Vibe and a "mastermind" by Variety, White was nominated for a total of 22 Grammys, of which he won seven. Tevin Campbell American singer, songwriter and actor

Tevin Jermod Campbell is an American singer, songwriter and actor. He performed gospel in his local church from an early age. Following an audition for jazz musician Bobbi Humphrey in 1988, Campbell was signed to Warner Bros. Records. In 1989, Campbell collaborated with Quincy Jones performing lead vocals for "Tomorrow" on Jones' album Back on the Block and released his Platinum-selling debut album, T.E.V.I.N. The album included his highest-charting single to date, "Tell Me What You Want Me to Do", peaking at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The debut album also included the singles "Alone With You", and "Goodbye".

Tramaine Hawkins

Tramaine Aunzola Richardson, known professionally as Tramaine Hawkins, is an American award–winning Gospel singer whose career spans over five decades. Since beginning her career in 1966, Hawkins has won two Grammy Awards, two Doves, and 19 Stellar Awards.

Samuel Joshua Watters is an American singer, songwriter, record producer and record executive. Watters was a member of the multi-platinum selling 1990s R&B group Color Me Badd and co-authored many of their hits including "I Adore Mi Amor", and "All 4 Love". Watters has also written and produced songs for Grammy-winning and nominated artists such as American Idol winners Fantasia, Kelly Clarkson and Jordin Sparks, and other superstars such as Céline Dion, Whitney Houston, Leona Lewis, and Anastacia. The Most Beautiful Girl in the World (Prince song) 1994 single by Prince

"The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" is the lead single from the 1994 EP The Beautiful Experience by Prince, and his 1995 album The Gold Experience. In his singles chronology, it was his third major release since changing his stage name to an unpronounceable "Love Symbol". In his albums chronology, it along with the EP was his second release after changing his name. With the consent of Prince's usual record distributor Warner Bros. Records, "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" was released by NPG Records and Edel Music, and independently distributed by Bellmark Records, under the control and guidance of Music of Life, as a one-off single, topping five different charts. The single was released in February 1994 in the United Kingdom, and remains Prince's only number one single on the UK Singles Chart, and was shortly followed by an EP of remixes titled The Beautiful Experience that also charted on #18 in the chart in the United Kingdom. The version that was released on The Gold Experience is a different mix of the song.

Mary Mary

Mary Mary is a female American urban contemporary gospel duo composed of sisters Erica Atkins-Campbell and Trecina Atkins-Campbell. Formed in 1998, Mary Mary was launched into mainstream recognition following the release of their best-selling debut album, Thankful (2000), which contained the hit single "Shackles ". Their followup album Incredible (2002), reached number one on the Top Gospel Albums chart. Their self-titled third album, Mary Mary (2005), which contains themes the public interpreted as a channel to the group's experience, contains the worldwide hits "Heaven", "The Real Party", and "Yesterday".

Edwin Hawkins American musician

Edwin Reuben Hawkins was an American gospel musician, pianist, choir master, composer, and arranger. He was one of the originators of the urban contemporary gospel sound. He was probably best known for his arrangement of "Oh Happy Day" (1968–69), which was included on the "Songs of the Century" list. The Edwin Hawkins Singers made a second foray into the charts exactly one year later, backing folk singer Melanie on "Lay Down ".

"Whoomp! " is a song by DC "The Brain Supreme" Glenn and Steve "Rolln" Gibson of the 1990s rap duo Tag Team. The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B charts in 1993 and No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart that same year. "Whoomp!" reached multi-platinum status and broke records for the number of consecutive weeks in the top 10. Though Tag Team is considered a one-hit wonder, as their subsequent singles did not find the same success, "Whoomp!" has remained a pop culture staple with multiple placements in film, television, and advertisements. The song has also endured as a mainstay at sporting and arena events.
