"The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" is a song by American musician Prince, released in various forms on the 1994 remixes EP The Beautiful Experience and later on his seventeenth album, The Gold Experience (1995). In his singles chronology, it was his third major release since changing his stage name to an unpronounceable "Love Symbol" (also known as The Artist Formerly Known As Prince). In his albums chronology, it along with the EP was his second release after changing his name.
With the consent of Prince's usual record distributor Warner Bros. Records, the song was released by NPG Records in North America and Edel Music in the rest of the world and independently distributed by Bellmark Records in the US, under the control and guidance of Music of Life, as a one-off single, topping five different charts. It also remains Prince's only number one single on the UK Singles Chart, [2] and was shortly followed by the release of The Beautiful Experience that also charted on No. 18 in the UK. The version that was released on The Gold Experience is a different mix of the song. Its music video was directed by Prince and Antoine Fuqua.
The original track is a slow-grooving ballad that serenades a beautiful woman, his soon-to-be fiancée, Mayte Garcia. The song was played during the Miss USA pageant in 1994, but not in full. It was widely advertised in news and trade magazines that a new song from Prince would be premiered at the pageant. The ads had Prince sitting in a chair with a hat pulled down over his face, and Garcia standing next to his chair. The song was officially released on February 24, 1994.[ citation needed ] It later appeared on The Gold Experience .
The version on The Gold Experience is remixed. The drums are more crisp in the mix, and there are slight instrumental changes. There are also added sound effects and instrumental breaks in the second version. The spoken word bridge is slightly more robust as well. The song is still based in light guitar, keyboards and live drums. Although most of the song is sung in falsetto with Prince reaching some extremely high notes, the spoken word bridge has him using his regular voice as well as a lower baritone range in one small segment. This version was performed live during the 1994 World Music Awards ceremony.
The song was a worldwide hit and established Prince's ability to succeed commercially under his new name, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was certified gold by the RIAA and sold 700,000 copies domestically. [3] [4] However, the song was his last top 10 hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 during his lifetime. [5]
The outstanding success of the single released in the UK on 1994 March 28 via Grapevine Distribution is solely based on the sales and marketing campaign put together by the late Mr. Nigel Reveler. It became his first and only UK No. 1 single under any name as a performer. [2] He did have two other UK number ones as a songwriter: the 1984 hit single "I Feel for You" covered by Chaka Khan and Sinéad O'Connor's 1990 cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U". Prince danced to his own song "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" after the World Music Awards at an after show event with Kylie Minogue in 1994.
AllMusic editor Daniel Browne complimented the song as a "dreamy slice of soul-pop" in the style of Delfonics mastermind Thom Bell. [6] Another editor, Stephen Thomas Erlewine, felt it has a "more immediate" melody, describing it as a "Philly soul tribute". [7] Upon the single release, Troy J. Augusto from Cash Box commented, "Never one to sit idly by. Prince returns after a short sabbatical with this new funky single, released through a new deal with Al Bell's Bellmark Records". He also said, "Already making waves at urban and top-40 radio, this keyboard-heavy, lushly produced track breaks no new ground for Prince, but looks like a sure bet for chart success. Expect to hear this song of female worship at the junior prom come June." [8] Greg Sandow from Entertainment Weekly called it "buoyant". [9] Lars Nielsen from Danish Gaffa declared it as a "pop-pearl". [10] Caroline Sullivan from The Guardian complimented it as "rather wonderful", writing further, "The glossy, propulsive funk beat and falsetto vocal are the infectious mainspring of an unusually romantic celebration of femalekind. Delectable." [11] In his weekly UK chart commentary, James Masterton felt that this "gorgeous ballad" is "probably his most MOR recording since "Diamonds and Pearls" [and] proving that behind all the raunch and funk lies a soul talent that is second to none." [12]
Chuck Campbell from Knoxville News Sentinel viewed it as "sappy" and "an unclever homage to an adored one." [13] Mark Carlson from The Michigan Daily named it one of the "highlights" from the album, describing it as "super-sappy (yet somehow wonderful)". [14] Alan Jones from Music Week gave it five out of five, naming it Pick of the Week. He remarked that it "is his most direct and accessible in ages. A love song which he renders in his prettiest falsetto, it's all over radio already, and is likely to make a huge impact on the main chart, as well as topping the indie listings." [15] John Kilgo from The Network Forty felt that it "may be Prince's strongest" since "Cream". [16] Terry Staunton from NME viewed it as "a fairly bog standard ballad, sounding a little too much like Barry Gibb for my liking." [17] A reviewer from Perthshire Advertiser called it a "stunning tune and a massive hit too!" [18] Tim Marsh from Select remarked that the song displayed "a confident touch". [19] Mark Sutherland from Smash Hits gave it five out of five and named it Best New Single, writing, "He's back and he's still brilliant! Prince [...] returns with a shivery pop delight that's one of his sweetest records yet, ditching his usual perviness for some totally corny lyrics about lurve." He added that "this delightful ballad will have the whole world a-smooching." [20]
In a 2020 retrospective review, Andy Healy from Albumism noted the song's "lush, rich serving of '70s soul and '90s pop." He added that everything about the song "is well crafted perfection", remarking that it "easily seduces the listener, it's at once romantic and passionate, and manages to just swirl around you, sweeping you away with its beauty." [21] Tom Ewing of Freaky Trigger described it as a "high, heady, perfume-drunk ballad drawing from the well of Thom Bell's work with the Delfonics and Stylistics." He added further, "Prince disciplines himself, staying almost throughout at the absolute top of his register, a high-wire act he pulls off without a hitch but also without any moment which completely sells the decision. The music is opulent boudoir funk, the best line – "How can I get through days when I can't get through hours?" – is very good, and there's a casual classiness to the record." [22]
In 2019, Alexis Petridis from The Guardian ranked it number 35 in his list of "Prince's 50 Greatest Singles – Ranked!", writing, "It is incredible that "The Most Beautiful Girl in The World" is Prince’s only UK No 1, given the singles that preceded it. Nevertheless, it’s a deft homage to the super-soft 70s soul of the Delfonics and the Stylistics, both of whom he subsequently covered." [23] Polish Porcys ranked it number five in their ranking of "100 Singles 1990-1999" in 2012. [24] In 2020, Rolling Stone included it in their list of "25 Essential Prince Songs". An editor noted that "the gorgeous falsetto-steeped ballad has clean funk guitar touches and keyboards, but Prince lets his gift for melody do most of the work." [25]
The accompanying music video for "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" was directed by Prince and American film director and producer Antoine Fuqua [26] on January 29, 1994. It depicts a collage of girls and women, that are watching footage of themselves living their fantasies mixed with Prince performing the song for them in a special room. The video was filmed at Paisley Park Studios and debuted on Valentine's Day 1994. In December 1993, Prince had an ad placed in US, British, a Dutch and Spanish publication reading: “Eligible bachelor seeks the most beautiful girl in the world to spend the holidays with” and encouraged all interested to send videos and/or pictures to Paisley Park Studios. The material sent in response to the advertisement (reportedly, over 50,000 girls responded) was utilized for the video. Seven finalists were chosen to appear in the video while 30 semi-finalists were featured on the sleeve of the record. [27]
At first the video's story was going to be a competition for the "title" of most beautiful woman in the world. Later, the story was reworked to be a celebration of every type of woman. Originally scheduled to be shot in Los Angeles City Hall on January 23, it was rescheduled to place in Minneapolis 6 days later, due to an earthquake in California. American educator Marva Collins makes a cameo appearance, as an elderly woman watching her black and white students interact peacefully. [27] [28] Also Nona Gaye [29] and Vanessa Marcil have cameo appearances in the video. Actress Rita Worlock plays a comedian with a red wig, watching herself doing a Joan Rivers type of thing. [30] Other women appearing in the video are: a bride watching herself getting married, a curvy woman viewing her fantasy of having a singing career, a female swimmer watching herself getting a medal, a mom reliving giving birth to her child, and a girl with dreads and top hat watching herself as a director on a set.
There has been a long running copyright dispute since 1995 and a court in Italy ruled that Prince had plagiarized the song, giving writing credit to those other than Prince. The outcome of this dispute resulted in the removal of the song from all digital storefronts and streaming platforms. [31] Bruno Bergonzi and Michele Vicino co-wrote the song "Takin' Me to Paradise", published in 1983 by Chappell & Co., now known as Warner Chappell Music. [32] An Italian court ruled in 2003 that Prince's "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" had plagiarized the song by the two Italian writers. Bergonzi and Vicino won on appeal in 2007. The third and final sentence, by the Court of Cassation of Rome, was given in May 2015. As of the final sentence, the Italian collecting society SIAE recognizes Bergonzi and Vicino as the authors of the song's music. [31] [33] In 2022, Prince’s estate and the songwriters reached an agreement over "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World", which allowed the song to be reissued on streaming and physical media. [34]

Mayte Garcia later recorded her own version called "The Most Beautiful Boy in the World". The song appears on her album Child of the Sun . It has the same instrumental backing track with extra reverb, and her vocals, with a few slight ad-lib changes. It was released by NPG Records.
"When Doves Cry" is a song by American musician Prince, and the lead single from his sixth studio album Purple Rain. According to the DVD commentary of the film Purple Rain (1984), Prince was asked by director Albert Magnoli to write a song to match the theme of a particular segment of the film that involved Prince's character The Kid's intermingled parental difficulties with his father Francis L. and mother and a love affair with Apollonia. The next morning, Prince had composed two songs, one of which was "When Doves Cry". According to Prince's biographer Per Nilsen, the song was inspired by his relationship with Vanity 6 member Susan Moonsie.
"Black Hole Sun" is a song by American rock band Soundgarden. Written by frontman Chris Cornell, the song was released in May 1994 by A&M Records as the third single from the band's fourth studio album, Superunknown (1994). Considered to be the band's signature song, it topped the US Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart, where it spent a total of seven weeks at number one. Despite peaking at number two on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, "Black Hole Sun" finished as the number-one track of 1994 for that listing. Worldwide, the single reached the top 10 in Australia, Canada, France, and Ireland, while in Iceland, it reached number one. The accompanying music video was directed by Howard Greenhalgh.
"Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" is a song by Canadian rock band Crash Test Dummies, and written by its singer Brad Roberts. It was released in October 1993 by Arista and BMG as the band's lead single from their second album, God Shuffled His Feet (1993). The accompanying music video was directed by Dale Heslip.
Come is the fifteenth studio album by American recording artist Prince. It was released on August 16, 1994, by Warner Bros. Records. At the time of its release, Prince was in a public dispute with Warner Bros. A lack of promotion from the label and Prince himself resulted in Come under-performing on American record charts, stalling at No. 15, and becoming his first album since Controversy (1981) to not yield any top 10 singles in the US. However, it was more successful overseas, reaching the top 10 across Europe and topping the UK Albums Chart.
The Gold Experience is the seventeenth studio album by American singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Prince. It was credited to his stage name at the time, an unpronounceable symbol, also known as the "Love Symbol".
"7" is a song by American musicians Prince and the New Power Generation. It was released on November 17, 1992 as the third single from their Love Symbol Album. Featuring a sample of the 1967 Lowell Fulson song "Tramp", the track showcases a distinct Middle Eastern tone underscored by heavy drums and bass in an acoustic style, a Hindu reincarnation theme, and an opera-like chorus which features Prince's multi-tracked vocals. The ambiguous lyrics, which have religious and apocalyptic themes, can be interpreted in many ways, as the "7" mentioned in the chorus could be referring to the Seven Deadly Sins, the seven Archon of Gnosticism, or the seven names of God in the Old Testament. The song received positive reviews and became the most successful single from the album in the United States, also peaking within the top forty in many of its major international markets.
"Nothing Compares 2 U" is a song written by the American musician Prince for his band the Family. It first appeared on their only album, The Family (1985). Its lyrics express the feelings of longing expressed by an abandoned lover.
"Letitgo" is a song by American musician Prince from his fifteenth studio album, Come (1994). Despite statements that the album consisted entirely of "old" material, "Letitgo" was actually newly composed for the album. The mid-tempo song relies heavily on a drum machine pattern and bass guitar with synthesizers in the refrain. A keyboard and percussion solo appear toward the end. The song is sung in falsetto in unison with another track layered in his regular, lower register. Kathleen Bradford provides backing vocals, while Eric Leeds provides flute accompaniment.
The Beautiful Experience is an EP by American musician Prince, his second commercial release under the symbolic moniker. The EP contained seven mixes of the song "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" in various formats, some with completely new vocals and/or instrumentation. Of particular note is the "Mustang Mix", in which Prince uses his normal singing voice and additional lyrics to give the song a sexual edge. The maxi-single also spawned two singles, "Staxowax" and "Mustang Mix", which were sold commercially in shops to support it.
"I Hate U" is a song by American musician Prince, released on September 12, 1995 by NPG and Warner Bros., as the lead single from his seventeenth studio album, The Gold Experience (1995). It was also Prince's last original single to reach the US Top 40, peaking at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the UK, it peaked at number 20. A music video was produced to promote the single, but never officially released until it was made available after Prince's death, on the official Prince YouTube channel in 2018.
"Betcha by Golly, Wow" is a song written by Thom Bell and Linda Creed, originally titled "Keep Growing Strong" and recorded by American actress and singer Connie Stevens under the Bell label in 1970. Stevens' recording runs two minutes and thirty seconds. The composition later became a hit when it was released by the Philadelphia soul group the Stylistics in 1972 under its better known title, "Betcha by Golly, Wow".
"Beautiful Life" is a song by Swedish band Ace of Base, released on 20 October 1995 from their second album, The Bridge (1995). In North America, it was the first single released from the album; in Europe, it followed "Lucky Love" as the second single. Co-written by band member Jonas Berggren and produced by him with Denniz Pop and Max Martin, the single reached number 15 on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart in December 1995. It reached number one on the Canadian RPM Dance/Urban chart and Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart. In 2017, BuzzFeed ranked "Beautiful Life" number 51 in their list of The 101 Greatest Dance Songs Of the '90s.
"Crazy" is a song by American hard rock band Aerosmith and written by Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, and Desmond Child. It was the fifth single from their 1993 album Get a Grip, released in May 1994 by Geffen Records. "Crazy" peaked at number 17 on the US Billboard Hot 100, number three in Canada, and number one in Iceland for two weeks. In Finland and the United Kingdom, it was released as a double-A side with "Blind Man", reaching number eight in the former country and number 23 in the latter. Marty Callner directed the song's music video, featuring Liv Tyler and Alicia Silverstone.
"All I Wanna Do" is a song performed by American singer and songwriter Sheryl Crow. It was written by Crow, David Baerwald, Bill Bottrell, and Kevin Gilbert, with lyrics adapted from Wyn Cooper's 1987 poem "Fun". Released in July 1994 by A&M, it was Crow's breakthrough hit from her 1993 debut album, Tuesday Night Music Club. The song is Crow's biggest US hit, peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 for six consecutive weeks from October 8 to November 12, 1994, and it also topped the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. It was the winner of the 1995 Grammy for Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and was nominated for Song of the Year.
"Woman" is a song written and performed by English singer John Lennon from his 1980 album Double Fantasy. The track was chosen by Lennon to be the second single released from the Double Fantasy album, and it was the first Lennon single issued after his murder on 8 December 1980. The B-side of the single is Yoko Ono's song "Beautiful Boys".
"Whoomp! " is the debut single by American hip-hop/pop-rap duo Tag Team, released in May 1993 by label Life as the first single from their debut album by same name (1993). The song was written by members Cecil "DC the Brain Supreme" Glenn and Steve "Rolln" Gibson, and reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot R&B chart, as well as No. 2 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cash Box Top 100. "Whoomp!" reached multi-platinum status and broke records for the number of consecutive weeks in the Billboard top 10. Tag Team is considered a one-hit wonder, as their subsequent singles did not find the same success. "Whoomp!" has remained a pop culture staple with multiple placements in film, television, and advertisements. The song has also endured as a mainstay at sporting and arena events. In 2024, Billboard ranked "Whoomp! " number 14 in their "The 100 Greatest Jock Jams of All Time".
"Pray" is a song by English boy band Take That. Written by band member Gary Barlow, the ballad was released on 5 July 1993 by RCA and BMG as the second single from the band's second studio album, Everything Changes (1993). It is the first of twelve singles by the band to reach number one on the UK Singles Chart, staying at number one for four weeks, and starting a streak of four consecutive number-one singles. The music video for "Pray" was directed by Gregg Masuak and filmed in Mexico.
"Everything Changes", sometimes "Everything Changes But You", is a song by English boy band Take That. "Beautiful Girls" is the debut single by American singer Sean Kingston from his 2007 eponymous debut album; it was first released in 2007, when Kingston was 17 and is considered his "signature song". The song is about a boy who feels "suicidal" over the prospect of dating a "beautiful girl" only to have her break up with him.
