The GfK Entertainment charts are the official charts for music, home video, and video games in Germany and are gathered and published by GfK Entertainment (formerly Media Control and Media Control GfK International), a subsidiary of GfK, on behalf of Bundesverband Musikindustrie . GfK Entertainment is the provider of weekly Top 100 single and album charts, as well as various other chart formats for genres like compilations, jazz, classical music, schlager, hip hop, dance, comedy, and music videos. [2] Following a lawsuit in March 2014 by Media Control AG, Media Control® GfK International had to change its name. [3]

Dissemination of the charts is conducted by various media outlets, some of which include MTV music channel, and the Swiss charts website. [4] [5] Other entities that present the charts are MusicLoad and Mix 1, both of which are online associations that post almost all the charts published by GfK Entertainment on a weekly basis. [6] [7] Furthermore, GfK Entertainment also runs a dedicated website providing chart-related news and access to most of the charts. [8]

History

Charts were first published in West Germany in 1959, in the magazine Der Musikmarkt (The Music Market), which has played an important role in the German music industry. Since 1959, the growing desire to have a well-developed music program has made Bundesverband Musikindustrie work together with charts providers to improve the way the charts are determined. [2]

For this purpose, different research institutes were tested, out of which Media Control, based in Baden-Baden, was selected. Hence, the first official charts were made available in the magazine Der Musikmarkt in September 1977. [2]

Initially, there used to be 50 positions only, which later in January 1980, was extended to 75 slots. [2] Since 1989, however, GfK Entertainment has adapted the international standards providing 100 positions, now called "Offizielle Top 100 Charts" [Official Top 100 Charts]. [2] In 2001, the Top-100 singles charts was modified to reflect the sales of the singles. [2]

Media Control developed "Music Video charts" in 2001, which later, in 2004, was renamed as "DVD charts". [2] While music-videos have their own separate charts, in 2001, GfK Entertainment made it possible for the music-video singles to have the ability to enter the Top-100 singles chart. Similarly, in 2002, it was made available for music-video albums to chart on the Top-100 album chart, if the video album contained at least 50% of audio recording. If not, then, the DVD album could qualify for the DVD chart only. [2] In the same vein, if an audio CD contains at least 50% of video recording, then, it could qualify to chart on the DVD chart. [2]

In 2003, Media Control joined forces with GfK, thus the company's name officially being changed to Media Control GfK International GmbH. [9]

In 2004, Germany became one of the first music markets wherein sales charts reflect online digital downloads. [10]

Digital-only releases came into existence on 13 July 2007, for online downloads only, which also altered the way the sales figures were conducted up to that point. Consequently, chart positions would no longer be affected by the number of sold music downloads as before, but rather, they would be affected by the sales value of the sold product. Thus, the best-selling albums would not necessarily be the ones ending up in the number-one position on the charts. [11]

In March 2014, GfK announced that the official chart provider's name in Germany will change from Media Control GfK International GmbH to GfK Entertainment. [9]

There are currently 3,000 outlets that report their sales on weekly bases in Germany. [2] The weekly sales data is transmitted to GfK Entertainment via communication network channel, PhonoNet. [2]

Released as the album's third single on 5 November 2001, it peaked at number one in the Czech Republic, Germany, Portugal and Switzerland and reached the top three in Austria and Finland. "From Sarah with Love" was nominated for Best National Single – Rock/Pop at the 2002 ECHO Awards and received a triple gold certification from the German arm of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.

Stadtaffe is the first solo album by German musician Peter Fox. Released 26 September 2008, the standard version contains twelve tracks, four of which have been released as singles. Fox performed the single Schwarz zu blau at the Bundesvision Song Contest 2009 in Potsdam while representing Berlin, and won, becoming the first person to win the contest twice. The album was certified 6× platinum for shipping 1.2 million copies in Germany and is the third-most-downloaded album of all time there, selling 100,000 copies from downloads only.

The Bundesverband Musikindustrie, or simply BVMI, represents the music industry in Germany. The association represents the interests of nearly 280 labels and music industry related enterprises, which comprise 90% of the music industry.

Swiss recording artist Stefanie Heinzmann has released six studio albums and 18 singles as a lead artist. In 2008, Heinzmann won SSDSDSSWEMUGABRTLAD, a talent contest hosted in TV total on the German ProSieben network, and was subsequently offered a recording contract with Universal Music Domestic. Her coronation song "My Man Is a Mean Man" debuted straight on top of the Swiss Singles Chart and reached the top ten in Austria and Germany. Heinzmann's debut album Masterplan was released in March 2008. It made it to the top ten in Austria and Germany and also debuted atop the album charts in Switzerland, where it was certified platinum by the IFPI for sales in excess of 30,000 copies. The album was reissued the same year and followed by her second album Roots to Grow in September 2009. Albeit less successful commercially, it peaked at number four on the Swiss Albums Chart and made it to the top twenty in Germany. Leading single "No One " reached the top thirty of the Swiss Singles Chart.

"Easy" is the debut single of German rapper Cro. A pop and rap song, it was produced by Cro, and the lyrics and musical composition are also attributed to him. Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären is the debut album by German recording artist Tim Bendzko. It was released by Sony Music Columbia on 17 June 2011 in German-speaking Europe. Bendzko worked with music producer Swen Meyer on most of the album which features material that was either written or co-written by himself. Its music incorporates a range of the contemporary rock, folk, and pop music genres with a mix of slow ballads and jazzy uptempo tracks.

The song was released as the band's debut single on 3 December 2001 following their formation on the RTL II reality television show Popstars – Du bist mein Traum. The GfK Entertainment hip hop albums chart is the official hip hop albums music chart in Germany and are gathered and published by GfK Entertainment on behalf of Bundesverband Musikindustrie. The chart was officially introduced on 1 April 2015. The chart week runs from Friday to Thursday with the official chart being published on the following Wednesday. The charts are based on sales of physical albums from retail outlets as well as permanent music downloads and streaming.

The song was released by Universal Music Group as a digital single on 16 August 2019 and peaked at number 15 on the German Singles Chart. "Better" also reached the top 20 in Austria.
