Mount Gambier is the second most populated city in South Australia,with an estimated urban population of 26,878 as of 2021. The city is located on the slopes of Mount Gambier,a volcano in the south east of the state,about 450 kilometres (280 mi) south-east of the capital Adelaide and just 17 kilometres (11 mi) from the Victorian border. The traditional owners of the area are the Bungandidj people. Mount Gambier is the most important settlement in the Limestone Coast region and the seat of government for both the City of Mount Gambier and the District Council of Grant.

Speirs served as the Minister for Environment and Water in the Marshall Ministry between March 2018 and March 2022.
Troy Stephen Bell is an Australian politician representing the South Australian House of Assembly seat of Mount Gambier. Representing the South Australian Division of the Liberal Party of Australia at the 2014 state election,he became an independent in 2017,after being accused of misappropriating more than $2 million of public money. In September 2024 a South Australian District Court jury found Troy Bell guilty of 20 counts of theft and five counts of dishonest dealings with documents after more than two days of jury deliberations. On 15 October 2024,Bell refused to step down in accordance with section 31 of the Constitution Act 1934,and vowed to appeal the conviction.
Andrew Lockhart McLachlan is an Australian politician who has been a Senator for South Australia since 6 February 2020,representing the Liberal Party of Australia. The South Australian Liberal Party,officially known as the Liberal Party of Australia (South Australian Division),and often shortened to SA Liberals,is the South Australian Division of the Liberal Party of Australia. It was formed as the Liberal and Country League (LCL) in 1932 and became the South Australian Division of the Liberal Party when the Liberal Party was formed in 1945. It retained its Liberal and Country League name before changing to its current name in 1974.
