Bengaluru International Short Film Festival (BISFF) is an annual short film festival held in Bengaluru, India. Held first in 2010, it previews and showcases selected short films, in categories such as International, Indian, Karnataka, Animation, and non-competition category. These films are of less than 50 minutes in duration.
The 2014 edition of BISFF was held in the month of August. [1] It received more than 500 short film submissions from 55 countries. [2] The movie Seuls by Sami Kali was adjudged as the Best Short film, while I Am Sami by Kae Bahar was also awarded.
Nooru Rupayi, a Kannada short film, won an award at BISFF 2015 and was also screened at the Washington DC South Asian Film Festival. [3] Goodbye, Mayfly, a short fiction film set around the 2010 summer agitation in Jammu and Kashmir, won the Best Indian Film Award at BISFF 2015. [4] The event saw the presence of Prakash Raj and Sriram Raghavan as chief guests. [5] During the year, BISFF also partnered with Fliqvine, a social video-on-demand provider, to facilitate online screening of 26 selected short films. [6]
The Best Short Films at BISFF 2015 were Artificio Conceal by Ayoub Qanir, Autonomous by Malla Grapengiesser, and Drops of Smoke by Ane Siderman.
BISFF 2016 received over 2,670 short film submissions from 81 countries. [2] Chalo Na Wali, a short Hindi film directed by Amol Bidkar, won the Best Screenplay Award at BISFF 2016 held in June. [7] Kshitij Sharma won the Best Director Award for the short film Kaalchakra, while The Mandrake and the Sword by Christian Skibinski and Nesrin Bachir received a special festival mention. Best Friends Forever by Tyna Ezenma and Jusqu'aux Etoiles by Janine Piguet won the Best Short Film awards.
In BISFF 2017, the Best Actor Award was won by Massud Rahnama for the short movie Halim. The movie, directed by Werner Fiedler, also won the Best Short Film Award. Tavleen Singh won the Best Music Award for 10 Rupay. The Best International Short Film Award was won by Nadine Asmar and Pascale Asmar for The Blind of the Cathedral.
The 2018 version of the Bengaluru International Short Film Festival was held during August 16–19. The event saw screening of over 200 short films across the venues of Suchitra Film Society in Banashankari, Cobalt in Church Street and Goethe Institute in Indiranagar. The international submissions were judged by Carter Pilcher (founder of Britain's Shorts International), Jukka-Pekka Laakso (director of Tampere film festival in Finland) and TS Nagabharana. Indian short films were judged by Vijaya (journalist), Srinivasa Santhanam (chief programmer for Mumbai Film Festival) and Diego Faraone (Uruguayan film critic). Karnataka-based short films saw a jury composed of Abhaya Simha, Ananya Kasaravalli and Suman Nagarkar. [8]
The Best Music Award was won by Ashim Kemson for the movie Good Night Sleep Tight. 9 to 6 by Sachin Kunder and Vinashi by Abhilash Shetty were nominated for the Best Short Films. Martien by Maxime Pillonel and Retouch by Kaveh Mazaheri were the Best International Short Films. The Nepalese short Phulsiri, was also screened as part of the BISFF official selection. The Kannada short film, Vighatane, made for BISFF 2018, was selected for screening at the Miami Independent Film Festival. [9] The Kannada silent short film, Chrono, was a finalist at BISFF and the movie's director, Vivek Anand, won the Best Innovator Award at the Cinemuskoka Film Festival 2018 held in Ontario, Canada. The short movie Neralu, starring Manasi Sudhir, also won an award at BISFF 2018. [11] Paarivala, directed by Jerring Chandan, was a finalist at the festival and a semi-finalist at the Newark Short Film Festival 2018 held in the US. [12] The short film, Pon Maalai Pozhudhu , was screened at the event and also made it to the International Short Film Festival Pune 2018. [13] Shavepuri, starring Ashwin Rao Pallakki, was also screened at the event. [14]
The 2019 edition of Bengaluru International Short Film Festival was held during August 15–19.
Kannada cinema, also known as Sandalwood, or Chandana Chitra, is the segment of Indian cinema dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Kannada language widely spoken in the state of Karnataka. The 1934 film Sati Sulochana directed by Y. V. Rao was the first talkie film in the Kannada language. It was also the first film starring Subbaiah Naidu and Tripuramba, and was the first motion picture screened in the erstwhile Mysore Kingdom. The film was produced by Chamanlal Doongaji, who in 1932 founded South India Movietone in Bangalore.
Amol Palekar is an Indian actor, director and producer of Hindi and Marathi cinema.
Puneeth Rajkumar, colloquially known as Appu, was an Indian actor, philanthropist, playback singer, television presenter and producer, who worked in Kannada cinema. He was the youngest son of actor and matinee idol Dr. Rajkumar. He was one of the most popular actors in Kannada cinema. He appeared as a lead in 32 films. As a child, he appeared in many films. His performances as a child actor in Vasantha Geetha (1980), Bhagyavantha (1981), Chalisuva Modagalu (1982), Eradu Nakshatragalu (1983), Bhakta Prahaladha (1983), Yarivanu (1984) and Bettada Hoovu (1985) were praised. He won the National Film Award for Best Child Artist for his role of Ramu in Bettada Hoovu. He also won Karnataka State Award Best Child artist for Chalisuva Modagalu and Eradu Nakshatragalu. Puneeth's first lead role was in 2002's Appu. In a career spanning three decades, he has won one National Film Award, four Karnataka State Film Awards, six Filmfare Awards South and five SIIMA awards. He was conferred with the Doctorate by Mysuru University. The Karnataka Government conferred the state's highest civilian award, Karnataka Ratna, to Puneeth Rajkumar on 1 November 2022, posthumously.
Prakash Raj is an Indian actor, film director, producer, television presenter, and politician. Asha Kelunni Nair, better known by her stage name Revathi, is an Indian actress and director, known for her works predominantly in Tamil and Malayalam cinema - in addition to Telugu, Hindi and Kannada films. She has won several accolades, including three National Film Awards, and six Filmfare Awards South. She has also won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in Bhoothakaalam (2022).
Benny Dayal is an Indian playback singer. He is a prominent singer in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Gujarati and Marathi and more languages films. He has sung more than 3500 songs in 19+ Indian languages. He is a member of the band S5, launched by SS Music TV channel. He made his acting debut in the Malayalam movie By the People, a suspense thriller. All the songs were sung by S5 members and it was then that A.R. Rahman noticed him and took an audition.
Ranjan Ghosh is a Bengali filmmaker based out of Kolkata, India. He had risen to prominence with the release of Aparna Sen's Bengali feature film Iti Mrinalini, by becoming the first and the only screenwriter, the acclaimed actor-director had collaborated with in her illustrious career till date. With this film, Ghosh had made his screenwriting debut. He made his directorial debut in 2014 with the critically acclaimed Hrid Majharey, a Bengali feature film starring Abir Chatterjee and Raima Sen. Inspired by certain iconic plays of William Shakespeare, it was the first film in the Bengali language based on the works of the Bard and was presented as a tribute on his 450th Birth Anniversary. His second film Rongberonger Korhi was an anthology of four short films woven around the theme of money and its relationship with human beings. It featured National Award-winning actor Rituparna Sengupta, veteran cine star Chiranjeet Chakraborty, critically acclaimed actors Ritwick Chakraborty, Soham Chakraborty, Kharaj Mukherjee, Arunima Ghosh, Arjun Chakrabarty and others. It became a widely acclaimed film on release in 2018, before doing the festival rounds in Dubai, Dhaka, London, and nationally at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad. In 2019, Ghosh released his third feature film, the hugely successful Ahaa Re featuring Bangladeshi actor Arifin Shuvoo, Rituparna Sengupta, Amrita Chattopadhyay, Paran Bandopadhyay, Deepankar De, Shakuntala Barua, Bangladeshi Cinema film actor Alamgir in a special appearance as a restaurant owner. The film made it to a coveted list of 25 all-time great Asian films about food, compiled by international film web magazine Asian Movie Pulse. Ghosh's fourth feature film Mahishasur Marddini featuring his muse Rituparna Sengupta along with Saswata Chatterjee, Parambrata Chattopadhyay and a bunch of young theatre actors, released in 2022 and is touted as his boldest work till date in which he experiments with form and style, combining the elements of theatre and cinema. The film was screened at the Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jamia Millia Islamia University. Earlier it became the first Indian feature film to screen at any theatre festival when it played at the 21st Habitat Theatre Festival, 2022, organized by the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

Halal is 2017 Marathi language social drama film, directed by national award-winning director Shivaji Lotan Patil and produced by Amol Kagne, Laxman Kagne under the banner of Amol Kagne Productions. It is their first film, and it deals with the theme of loyalty, love and the institution of marriage that is deemed to be pious by the society.
