The Berger Elite League is the premier domestic netball league in Jamaica. Inaugurated in 2013, the league is contested by 6 teams (two under 21 teams were added in 2017 in preparation for the 2017 Netball World Youth Cup). The new domestic league was launched by Netball Jamaica in 2013, making it the first professional netball league within the Caribbean region.

Teams

The Berger Elite League consist of six teams from different parishes within Jamaica. In the 2016/2017 season, two Under 21 teams, the U21 Suns and U21 Shiners were added to the league in preparation for the 2017 Netball World Youth Cup.

Format

The Berger Elite League takes place from early December to late January to avoid interruption among international netball events such as test matches, Netball World Cup, Fast5 Netball World Series, Caribbean Championship. The Grand Finale is determined by a three-game series and all games take place at one venue per round, either outdoor at the Leila Robinson Courts or indoor at the National Indoor Sports Complex.

Media coverage

Netball Jamaica has partnered with SportsMax TV in broadcasting selected matches within Jamaica and the Caribbean region. Also, all elimination rounds and finals are televised live on SportsMax TV.

Laura Robyn Langman is a retired New Zealand international netball player, who last played domestic netball for the Sunshine Coast Lightning in the Australian Super Netball league. Primarily a midcourt player, Langman is a former captain and vice-captain of the New Zealand national netball team. She is the most capped player in the history of the Silver Ferns, having overtaken Irene van Dyk's record of 145 test matches in October 2018.

Team Northumbria is an English netball team based at Northumbria University. Between 2001 and 2005 they played in the Super Cup as Northern Flames. They also played as Team Northumbria Flames. Between 2005–06 and 2018, their senior team played in the Netball Superleague. The netball team is one of several sports teams based at Northumbria University that use the Team Northumbria brand name. Others include an association football team and a basketball team. In 2018 Northumbria University announced it was withdrawing seven of its national league sports teams due to cuts to its elite sport programme. This included Team Northumbria withdrawing from the Netball Superleague.

Elaine Lamour Davis is a Jamaican international netball player. Fresh out of high school, she got her baptism in international sports when she was selected as a member of the national senior team, the Sunshine Girls, for the ninth World Netball Championships held in Birmingham, England in 1995. Davis officially debuted for the Jamaica national team during the 1995 Netball World Championships against Barbados, and has played goal shooter for most of her career.

The history of netball can be traced to the early development of basketball. A year after basketball was invented in 1891, the sport was modified for women to accommodate social conventions regarding their participation in sport, giving rise to women's basketball. Variations of women's basketball arose across the United States and in England. At the Bergman Österberg physical training college in Dartford, England, the rules of women's basketball were modified over several years to form an entirely new sport: "net ball". The sport was invented to encourage young females to be physically active and energetic. The first codified rules of netball were published at the start of the twentieth century, and from there the new sport spread throughout the British Empire.

Althea Latoya Lee is a Jamaican international basketball and netball player. Lee is currently retired in both sports internationally and now resides in The United States.

Kasey Evering is a Jamaican international netball player. Evering is primarily a defender at international level, although she also plays as a shooter in domestic competition.

World Netball's Americas region includes North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean. The region covers 54 nations, of which 15 have national governing bodies as of 2021. Each year, the region hosts two tournaments: the CNA U16 Championship and the AFNA Senior Championship. World Netball was formerly called the "International Netball Federation" or INF.

Women's football in Jamaica was first reported in 1935. The sport later grew in popularity, forming leagues and eventually the Caribbean's first team to qualify for a FIFA Women's World Cup.

Jhaniele Fowler is a professional Jamaican netball player and as of 2018 a member of the West Coast Fever in the Suncorp Super Netball League. Fowler also plays domestic netball in Jamaica for the Waulgrovians club, and has been a member of the Jamaica national netball team since 2010.

Kadie-Ann Dehaney is a Jamaican netball player who plays for the Sunshine Coast Lightning in the Suncorp Super Netball league. She has also represented the Jamaica national netball team.

Malysha Kelly is a Jamaican netball player, who has made over 50 appearances for the national side, and is a former captain. At club level, she most recently played for Severn Stars in the Netball Superleague.

The Samoa national under-21 netball team is the highest youth team of netball for Samoa and represents Samoa at the Netball World Youth Cup. It is controlled by the Samoa Netball Association.
