Berlioz Point ( 72°12′S74°6′W / 72.200°S 74.100°W / -72.200; -74.100 Coordinates: 72°12′S74°6′W / 72.200°S 74.100°W / -72.200; -74.100 ) is a snow-covered headland on the south side of Beethoven Peninsula, Alexander Island, marking the northwest entrance point to the embayment occupied by Bach Ice Shelf. The south part of Alexander Island was first roughly mapped by the United States Antarctic Service in 1940, but this point was not clearly identified. It was mapped from air photos obtained by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960, and named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after the French composer Hector Berlioz.

A geographic coordinate system is a coordinate system that enables every location on Earth to be specified by a set of numbers, letters or symbols. The coordinates are often chosen such that one of the numbers represents a vertical position and two or three of the numbers represent a horizontal position; alternatively, a geographic position may be expressed in a combined three-dimensional Cartesian vector. Beethoven Peninsula

The Beethoven Peninsula is a deeply indented, ice-covered peninsula, 60 miles (100 km) long in a northeast-southwest direction and 60 miles (100 km) wide at its broadest part, forming the southwest part of Alexander Island, which lies off the southwestern portion of the Antarctic Peninsula. The south side of the peninsula is supported by the Bach Ice Shelf whilst the north side of the peninsula is supported by the Wilkins Ice Shelf. The Mendelssohn Inlet, the Brahms Inlet and the Verdi Inlet apparently intrude into it. The Bach Ice Shelf, Rossini Point and Berlioz Point are some distance away, on the Ronne Entrance from the Southern Ocean. Beethoven Peninsula is one of the eight peninsulas of Alexander Island.

Alexander Island, which is also known as Alexander I Island, Alexander I Land, Alexander Land, Alexander I Archipelago, and Zemlja Alexandra I, is the largest island of Antarctica. It lies in the Bellingshausen Sea west of Palmer Land, Antarctic Peninsula from which it is separated by Marguerite Bay and George VI Sound. George VI Ice Shelf entirely fills George VI Sound and connects Alexander Island to Palmer Land. The island partly surrounds Wilkins Sound, which lies to its west. Alexander Island is about 390 kilometres (240 mi) long in a north-south direction, 80 kilometres (50 mi) wide in the north, and 240 kilometres (150 mi) wide in the south. Alexander Island is the second largest uninhabited island in the world, after Devon Island.

Veststraumen Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Veststraumen Glacier is a glacier about 45 miles long draining west along the south end of Kraul Mountains into Riiser-Larsen Ice Shelf. The glacier was seen in the course of a U.S. Navy LC-130 plane flight over the coast on November 5, 1967, and was plotted by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from photographs obtained at that time. In 1969, the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) gave the name "Endurance Glacier" to this feature, but that naming was rescinded because UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) gave the identical name to a small glacier on Elephant Island. The descriptive name "Veststraumen" appears on a 1972 Norsk Polarinstitutt map.

Bach Ice Shelf ice shelf in Antarctica

The Bach Ice Shelf is an ice shelf which is irregular in shape and 45 miles (72 km) in extent, occupying an embayment in the south part of Alexander Island entered between Berlioz Point and Rossini Point. The ice shelf supports the south face of the Beethoven Peninsula, along with some minor extensive peninsulas and small inlets Bach ice shelf also supports the north side of the Monteverdi Peninsula. A minor embayment in this position first appeared on the charts of the US Antarctic Service, which explored the south part of Alexander Island by air and from the ground in 1940. The ice shelf was delineated by Derek J.H. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960, from air photos obtained by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947–48. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach.

Smyley Island Antarctic island

Smyley Island is an Antarctic island lying off the Antarctic Peninsula at coordinates 72°55′S78°0′W. The island is 38 mi (61 km) long and from 8 to 21 mi wide, and lies about 20 km (12 mi) north of Case Island. Smyley Island connects to the Stange Ice Shelf and is separated from Alexander Island by the Ronne Entrance. Smyley island is one of the 27 islands in Palmer Land, Antarctica.

Umber Island

Umber Island is a rocky island, 2.4 km long, lying 1.75 km (1.09 mi) southwest of Kamhi Point and 10 km northwest of Dint Island lying within Lazarev Bay, off the west side of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The island was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE) in 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960, it was so named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee because on the RARE photos the island appears in deep shadow cast by the Havre Mountains to the north.

Isbrecht Glacier glacier in Antarctica


Isbrecht Glacier is a small glacier flowing south from Thurston Island in Antarctica between Cox Glacier and Hale Glacier. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after JoAnn Isbrecht of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Flagstaff, Arizona, a satellite image processing specialist who was part of the USGS team that compiled the 1:5,000,000-scale Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer maps of Antarctica and the 1:250,000-scale Landsat image maps of the Siple Coast area in the 1990s.

Ives Ice Rise is an ice rise about 1 mile (1.6 km) long at the head of Weber Inlet, an ice-filled inlet situated between Bennett Dome and Berlioz Point on the Beethoven Peninsula, situated in the southwest part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from U.S. Navy aerial photographs taken 1967–68 and Landsat imagery taken 1972–73. In association with the names of composers grouped in this area, it was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Charles Ives, the American composer.

Couperin Bay is a bay on the south coast of Beethoven Peninsula, Alexander Island, between Perce Point and Berlioz Point. The bay was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, and was mapped from the photographs by D. Searle of Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1977 in association with the names of composers grouped in this area, after François Couperin, the French composer. Couperin Bay marks the western most bay of Alexander Island.

Cox Glacier is a small glacier immediately east of Rochray Glacier on Thurston Island, flowing south to Abbot Ice Shelf in Peacock Sound. It was delineated from air photos taken by U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6 in January 1960, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Lieutenant Jerry G. Cox, a helicopter pilot aboard USS Burton Island, who made exploratory flights to Thurston Island in February 1960. Jordan Nunatak stands between Cox and Rochray Glacier.

Craft Glacier is a valley glacier about 5 nautical miles (9 km) long, lying west of Hendersin Knob on Thurston Island and flowing south to Abbot Ice Shelf in Peacock Sound. It was first delineated from air photos taken by U.S. Navy Operation Highjump in December 1946, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Ensign Charles Craft, U.S. Navy, a helicopter pilot on USS Glacier who made exploratory flights at Thurston Island in February 1960.

Myers Glacier is a valley glacier about 7 nautical miles long, flowing southwest from Mount Noxon on Thurston Island to Abbot Ice Shelf in Peacock Sound. Delineated from aerial photographs taken by U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6 in January 1960. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Lieutenant (j.g.) Dale P. Myers, U.S. Navy, helicopter pilot aboard USS Burton Island who made exploratory flights to Thurston Island in February 1960.

Perce Point is a low ice-covered headland 12 nautical miles (22 km) west-northwest of Berlioz Point on the southern coast of the Beethoven Peninsula, situated in the wouthwest portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The headland was first discovered by Snow, Perce and Carroll of the United States Antarctic Service (USAS) expedition in a flight from Stonington Island on December 22, 1940. Originally named "Cape Perce" after Earl B. Perce, co-pilot of the discovery aircraft, but the term point is considered appropriate for this feature.

Eroica Peninsula is an ice-covered peninsula lying north of Beethoven Peninsula and Mendelssohn Inlet in western Alexander Island, Antarctica. The tip of the peninsula is Kosar Point, marking the western extremity of the Eroica Peninsula. It was mapped from trimetrogon air photography taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, and from survey by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, 1948–50. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Beethoven's Eroica symphony, in association with Beethoven Peninsula. Eroica Peninsula is one of the eight peninsulas of Alexander Island.

Gluck Peak is a rock peak, 335 metres (1,100 ft) high, located 6.5 nautical miles (12 km) south-southwest of Mount Borodin and immediately north of Alyabiev Glacier, lying between the bases of Bennett Dome and Shostakovich Peninsula on south side of the Beethoven Peninsula, southwest Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was first mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Christoph Willibald von Gluck, the Austrian composer (1714-1787).

Hale Glacier is a glacier about 6 nautical miles (11 km) long, located just east of Mount Simpson on Thurston Island, Antarctica, and flowing southwest to the Abbot Ice Shelf in Peacock Sound. It was delineated from air photos taken by U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6 in January 1960, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Lieutenant Bill J. Hale, U.S. Navy, a helicopter pilot aboard USS Burton Island who made exploratory flights to Thurston Island in February 1960.

Long Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Long Glacier is a glacier about 8 nautical miles long in the southeastern part of Thurston Island, Antarctica. It flows south to the Abbot Ice Shelf, 14 nautical miles (26 km) west of Harrison Nunatak. The glacier was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1960–66, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Fred A. Long, Jr., an aviation machinist of U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6, who wintered at Little America V in 1957 and was in Antarctica in the 1960–61 and 1962–63 seasons.

Lofgren Peninsula

Lofgren Peninsula is an ice-covered peninsula about 22 nautical miles (40 km) long, projecting between Cadwalader Inlet and Morgan Inlet on the northeast side of Thurston Island, Antarctica. The northern extremity of the peninsula is Cape Menzel, a bold rock cape. These features were discovered in helicopter flights from the USS Burton Island and the USS Glacier of the U.S. Navy Bellingshausen Sea Expedition in February 1960, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names. The peninsula was named for Charles E. Lofgren, personnel officer with the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, 1928–30. The cape was named for Reinhard W. Menzel, a geomagnetist-seismologist with the Eights Station winter party, 1965.

Rossini Point is a snow-covered point on the south coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica. This headland marks the southeast side of the entrance to the embayment occupied by Bach Ice Shelf. First seen and roughly mapped by the United States Antarctic Service (USAS), 1939-41. Remapped in greater detail from air photos obtained by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960. Named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Gioacchino Rossini (1792–1868), Italian composer.
