Bernabe Costas de Miranda (born 16 January 1980) is a professional wheelchair basketball player from Spain. As a member of Spain men's national wheelchair basketball team, he earned a bronze at the 2011 European Championships, and a fifth-place finish at the 2012 Summer Paralympics. He has spent most of his professional career playing for Aldasa Amfiv de Vigo in Spain's top level domestic wheelchair basketball league.

Personal

Costas was born on 16 January 1980 in Galicia. He resided in Gondomar, Pontevedra in 2012. [1] [2]

Wheelchair basketball

A professional wheelchair basketball player, [3] Costas is a center, [4] and a 2.5 point player. [5] He first started playing wheelchair basketball with the Spanish team Aldasa Amfiv de Vigo. [6]

National team

Costas was part of the Spain men's national wheelchair basketball team that competed at the 2009 European Championships. He was the team's top scorer in the game against Germany during the competition. [7]

His selection to represent Spain at the 2011 European Championships was made in March. [8] Nazareth, Israel hosted the 2011 European tournament. As a member of the 2011 team, he earned a bronze medal. [2] [5]

The official selection for the 2012 Games team was made in late June 2012 by the Spanish Federation of Sports for the Physically Disabled. It came after a wheelchair basketball tournament in Worcester. He was one of two Galicians chosen for the squad, [6] and one of twelve Galicians on the whole Spanish team. [9] He arrived in Madrid for a national team training camp held at the High Performance Centre, Madrid ahead of the London Paralympics. [3] On the third day of the camp, He bruised the scaphoid bone as a result of a fall on his left hand. [10] He departed for London with the rest of the team to prepare for the Games on 17 August. [11] [12] He and the rest of the team moved into the Paralympic Village on 25 August. [3]

Coached by Oscar Trigo, [13] London was the first time the Spanish men's national team had qualified for the Paralympics in 16 years. [14] The Games were Costa's first. [15] His team finished fifth overall. [14] He played very few minutes in the tournament because of an injury. [10] He scored two points in the game against Germany. [16]

Club

Costas played for Aldasa Amfiv de Vigo in Spain's top level domestic wheelchair basketball competition during the 2009/2010, [4] [17] 2010/2011, [8] 2011/2012, [18] and 2012/2013 seasons. [19] While starting and spending most of his playing career with Aldasa Amfiv de Vigo, Costas and national team teammate David Mouriz Dopico both left the team for two seasons to play for a Barcelona club before returning to Vigo. [15] While having the opportunity to play for other clubs, he chose to remain with Vigo following the Paralympics because it put him closer to his family. [20] He joined the team for their 2012/2013 preseason training camp in late September 2012. [21]

In 2012, he represented Spain in wheelchair basketball at the Paralympic Games in London where his team finished fifth.

Spain men's national wheelchair basketball team has represented Spain at the IWBF European Championships, IWBF World Championships and at the Paralympic Games. The team won a bronze at the 2013 European Championships. They finished fifth at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, and sixth at the 1992 Summer Paralympics. Spain also has a men's national under-22 team and under-23 team. The under-23 team finished second at the 2009 Paris European Championships.

Maria Dolores "Lola" Ochoa Ribes is a Spanish wheelchair tennis player. A paraplegic as a result of an accident when she was 14, she picked up tennis as a wheelchair player following it. She has gone on to represent Spain at the 2004 Summer Paralympics, 2008 Summer Paralympics and 2012 Summer Paralympics, and the 2013 World Championships. In 2013, she was ranked 61st in the world.

Carlos Soler Márquez is a Spanish wheelchair fencer who has represented Spain at five Paralympic Games. Following the 2012 Games, he retired from the sport. He is also a fencing administrator and coach, having organized a World Cup event at the fencing club where he is president.

Francesc Tur Blanch is a wheelchair tennis player from Spain. He has competed in the men's single and doubles events representing Spain at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Paralympics. His top international singles world ranking was 19th, a rank he held in August 2010.

Elena Jacinto Vélez is a Spanish wheelchair tennis player, whose best world ranking has been 24th. She competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics. She trains with and is a doubles partner with fellow Spaniard, Lola Ochoa Ribes.

The Spanish Wheelchair Basketball League, in Spanish called División de Honor de Baloncesto en Silla de Ruedas is the top-flight professional league for wheelchair basketball teams in Spain with men and women players. It is governed by the Spanish Sports Federation for People with Physical Disabilities.
