James Joseph Heckman is an American economist and Nobel laureate who serves as the Henry Schultz Distinguished Service Professor in Economics at the University of Chicago,where he is also a professor at the College,a professor at the Harris School of Public Policy,Director of the Center for the Economics of Human Development (CEHD),and Co-Director of Human Capital and Economic Opportunity (HCEO) Global Working Group. He is also a professor of law at the Law School,a senior research fellow at the American Bar Foundation,and a research associate at the NBER. He received the John Bates Clark Medal in 1983,and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2000,which he shared with Daniel McFadden. He is known principally for his pioneering work in econometrics and microeconomics.
William Julius Wilson is an American sociologist,a professor at Harvard University,and an author of works on urban sociology,race,and class issues. Laureate of the National Medal of Science,he served as the 80th President of the American Sociological Association,was a member of numerous national boards and commissions. He identified the importance of neighborhood effects and demonstrated how limited employment opportunities and weakened institutional resources exacerbated poverty within American inner-city neighborhoods.
Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander was a pioneering Black professional and civil rights activist of the early-to-mid-20th century. In 1921,Mossell Alexander was the second African-American woman to receive a Ph.D. and the first one to receive one in economics in the United States. In 1927,she was first Black woman to receive a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and went on to become the first Black woman to practice law in the state. She was also the first national president of Delta Sigma Theta sorority,serving from 1919 to 1923.
Andrew Felton Brimmer was an American economist and business leader who served as a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors from 1966 to 1974. A member of the Democratic Party,Brimmer was the first African American to sit on the Board.

Almarin Phillips was an American economist specializing in industrial economics and professor emeritus of public policy,economics and law at University of Pennsylvania. Phillips joined the Penn faculty in 1963,teaching economic courses at the Wharton School and antitrust courses at the Law School. Additionally,he served as dean of the former School of Public and Urban Policy in the 1970s,and later chaired the faculty Senate. After retiring in 1991,Phillips served as chairman of the board of Econsult Corp.,a Philadelphia economic-consulting firm. After five years,he stepped down as chairman,but continued as an academic affiliate of the firm. Phillips was the author,coauthor,or editor of numerous books and articles. In 1960 he was elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. A decorated World War II veteran,he died of pancreatic cancer in 2006.
