Bernhard Helmich (born 13 August 1962) is a German theatre manager.

Activities

Born in Idar-Oberstein, from 1981 to 1987 Helmich studied musical theatre directing with Götz Friedrich as well as literature and musicology in Cologne and Hamburg; he received his doctorate there in 1989. For a time, he was assistant director at the Hamburg State Opera and at the Komische Oper Berlin.

From 1989 to 1992, Helmich worked at the National Theatre Taipei, lectured at Fu Jen Catholic University and worked for the government's cultural agency. From 1992, Helmich was a dramaturge at the Theater Trier  [ de ] and Bielefeld. From 1995 to 2001, he worked as a dramaturge and advisor to the general director at Theater Dortmund. From 2001 to 2005, he was chief dramaturge at the Leipzig Opera and director of the Musikalische Komödie. [1]

From 2006 to 2013, Helmich was general director of the Städtische Theater Chemnitz. During this time, the Chemnitz Opera with its general music director Frank Beermann and the theatre under the direction of Enrico Lübbe  [ de ] attracted attention with numerous awards and prizes. One focus was on first performances or revivals of rarely performed operas, which were also broadcast on the radio and released on CD or DVD. For example, the Meyerbeer's production Vasco da Gama , a rarely performed version of the opera "The African", was awarded the Klassik-Echo. [2]

Since the 2013/14 season, Helmich has been general director at Theater Bonn, where he first worked with theatre director Nicola Bramkamp and since 2018 with theatre director Jens Groß  [ de ]. [3] In addition to the established repertoire in opera, musical and operetta, the focus of the work in musical theatre is a cycle of early works by Giuseppe Verdi, the rediscovery of numerous works from the 1920s and early 1930s, as well as regular premieres and first performances. In 2018, the house was voted North Rhine-Westphalia's Opera of the Year in the Die Welt critics' poll. [4] From the 2020/21 season, the Bonn Theatre will receive a total of €1.3 million from the "New Ways" funding programme for the "Fokus '33" programme series. [5]

Helmich is married to choreographer Lin Mei-hong. [6] Since the 2013/2014 season, she has taken over the ballet direction at the Landestheater Linz in Upper Austria. [7]

After decades of acting and directing plays, he turned to staging operas, and was a long-time intendant of the Deutsche Oper Berlin from 1961, when the Berlin Wall was built. He staged notable world premieres, including Ernst Barlach's play Der Graf von Ratzeburg in 1951, Ionesco's Mörder ohne Bezahlung in 1958, Giselher Klebe's Alkmene in 1961 for the opening of the Deutsche Oper, and Aribert Reimann's opera Melusine in 1971.

Oscar Fritz Schuh was a German-Austrian opera director, theatre director and opera manager. He is known for directing Mozart operas at the Vienna State Opera and the Salzburg Festival in productions that toured internationally. They focused on the psychology of the characters.

Lin Mei-hong is a Taiwanese choreographer. Lin began dancing with the Lanyang Dance Troupe in Taiwan, then moved to Italy and Germany for further training. She has spent the majority of her career in Europe, with the Ballet in Plauen, Theater Dortmund, and Staatstheater Darmstadt. In 2013, Lin became artistic director for the ballet of the Austrian Landestheater Linz.

Andreas K. W. Meyer is a German dramaturge and journalist.

Christian Kluttig is a German conductor, pianist and Hochschullehrer. From 1979 to 1990, he was chief conductor of the Orchester des Opernhauses Halle. Appointed General Music Director in 1983, he worked as such at the theatres in Halle (Saale) and Theater Koblenz. The Handel interpreter rendered special services to the implementation of Historically informed performance in the Saale city, which made him one of the most important protagonists in this field in the GDR. He also devoted himself to Neue Musik, premiering Reiner Bredemeyer's opera Candide.

Paul Devrient, real name Walter Stieber, also Paul Stieber-Walter was a German operatic tenor and theatre director. He was considered a renowned Verdi and Mozart interpreter. He also gained notoriety as Adolf Hitler's voice coach and speech teacher in 1932.
