Beryl Friday (born 19 January 1994) is an Australian netball player. Friday was a member of the Queensland Firebirds teams that won the 2015 and 2016 ANZ Championships. She has also played for Queensland Fusion, Territory Storm and Canberra Giants in the Australian Netball League, Team Bath in the Netball Superleague and West Coast Fever in Suncorp Super Netball.

Early life, family and education

Friday is an Aboriginal Australian woman from Ingham, North Queensland. [3] [4] [5] [6] She is a Kuku Nyungkal woman of the Kuku Yalanji nation. She is also a descendant of the Olkolo, the Birri Gubba and the Kamilaroi nations. [7] [8] [9] She was one of five children. Her mother and two older sisters were keen netballers and at eight years old, Beryl was taken to the local courts of the Herbert River Netball Association. While attending a coaching clinic in Townsville, she was spotted by Vicki Wilson. She subsequently gained a sports scholarship to attend St Margaret's Anglican Girls' School. [3] [4] [8] [10] As of 2021, Friday is studying for an education degree at Griffith University. She was an inaugural recipient of a scholarship named in honour of Ron Clarke. [9] [11] [12]

Playing career

Queensland

Between 2011 and 2015, Friday represented Queensland at the Australian National Netball Championships at under-17, under-19 and under-21 levels. She was a vice captain of the 2014 under-21 team and she captained the 2015 under-21 team. [13] [14] [15] [16] [17]

Queensland Firebirds

Friday was a member of the Queensland Firebirds teams that won the 2015 and 2016 ANZ Championships. [3] [4] [5] [6] [15] [17] [18] [19]

Australian Netball League

Queensland Fusion

Between 2012 and 2015, Friday played for Queensland Fusion in the Australian Netball League. She helped Fusion finish as runners up in the 2014 season. [4] [6] [13] [15] [20]

Territory Storm

In 2017, Friday played for Territory Storm in the Australian Netball League. [21]

Canberra Giants

During the 2018 season, Friday played for Canberra Giants in the Australian Netball League. She helped Giants finish as runners up in the ANL. In the grand final against Tasmanian Magpies, Friday scored 22 from 29. [20] [22] [23] [24] [25] [26]

Team Bath

Friday played for Team Bath in the 2018 British Fast5 Netball All-Stars Championship and the 2019 Netball Superleague. [1] [27] [28] [29] [30] [31] On 5 January 2019, she made her Netball Superleague debut in a 58–41 Round 1 win against Celtic Dragons. [32]

West Coast Fever

Friday played for West Coast Fever during the 2019 Suncorp Super Netball season as a temporary replacement player for Kaylia Stanton. She made her debut for Fever on 3 August 2019 in the Round 11 match against Melbourne Vixens. [33] [34] [35]

Queensland state netball leagues

Friday has played for several teams in various Queensland state netball league competitions. She played for Carina Leagues Club Tigers in the Queensland Champions Cup, winning the MVP award in 2013 and 2014. In 2014 she shared the award with Abigail Latu-Meafou. [6] [13] [36] She played for Tigers again in 2018. [37] Friday has played in the HART Sapphire Series for QUT Wildcats in 2020 and for USQ Ipswich Jets in 2021. [38] [39] [2] [9] [12] [40] [41]

Coach, mentor and ambassador

In February 2021, together with Sharon Finnan, Friday became a founding member of Netball Queensland's Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee. [8] [42] [43] Since February 2021, Friday has served as an ambassador for the Brisbane Broncos' Beyond the Broncos Girls Academy. [7] [8] [44] In March 2021, Friday was named as an assistant coach for the Netball Queensland's under-17 team at the Australian National Netball Championships. [45]

The ANZ Championship, also known as the Trans-Tasman Netball League, is a former netball league featuring teams from both Australia and New Zealand. Between 2008 and 2016, it was the top-level league in both countries. The competition was owned and administered by Trans-Tasman Netball League Ltd (TTNL), a joint venture between Netball Australia and Netball New Zealand. It was effectively a merger of Australia's Commonwealth Bank Trophy and New Zealand's National Bank Cup. Its main sponsor was the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group.

Bulley also won three ANZ Championship titles with three different teams – the 2008 New South Wales Swifts, the 2013 Adelaide Thunderbirds and the 2015 Queensland Firebirds. She began her senior club career with Melbourne Kestrels during the Commonwealth Bank Trophy era and finished it playing for Giants Netball in Suncorp Super Netball.

Katie Walker is a former Australian netball player and current netball coach. Walker played for both Hunter Jaegers and Queensland Firebirds during the Commonwealth Bank Trophy era. She also played for Firebirds during the 2008 ANZ Championship season. Since 2020, Walker has been a member of the Firebirds coaching staff, serving as an assistant coach, specialist coach and head coach of Queensland Sapphires.

Geva Kate Mentor CBE is an England netball international. She has competed in 6 Commonwealth Games, and in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games she was honoured to read, during the Opening Ceremony, The Athletes Oath on behalf of all the competing athletes. She was a member of the England team that won the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She was also a member of the England teams that won the bronze medal at the 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games and at the 2011, 2015 and 2019 Netball World Cups. She captained England at the 2015 Netball World Cup. In 2019 she was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to netball.

Janelle Lawson is an Australian netball player. In 2012 she was a member of the Northern Thunder team that won the Netball Superleague title. During the Commonwealth Bank Trophy era she played for Perth Orioles and AIS Canberra Darters. During the ANZ Championship era she played for Queensland Firebirds and West Coast Fever.

The 2015 ANZ Championship season was the eighth season of the ANZ Championship. The season began on 28 February and concluded on 21 June. The 2015 season saw the introduction of several major format changes and initiatives, including a Conference system, a six-team Finals Series, drawn games and a new Ranfurly Shield-style competition, the Challenge Trophy. With a team coached by Roselee Jencke, captained by Laura Geitz and featuring Romelda Aiken, Clare McMeniman and Kim Ravaillion, Queensland Firebirds won the Australian Conference, the Challenge Trophy, the minor premiership and the overall championship. Firebirds narrowly defeated New South Wales Swifts in both the Australian Conference final and the Grand Final on their way to effectively winning four titles.

Kimberley Ravaillion, is an Australia netball international. Ravaillion was a member of the Australia teams that won the gold medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2015 Netball World Cup and the silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. In January 2013, aged 19, she made her senior debut for Australia during an away series against England. This saw Ravaillion make her senior test debut before making her top-level league debut. Her first game for Queensland Firebirds came two months later. She was subsequently a member of the Firebirds teams that won the 2015 and 2016 ANZ Championships. Between 2017 and 2019 she played for Collingwood Magpies in Suncorp Super Netball. After missing the 2020 season due to pregnancy, Ravaillion rejoined Queensland Firebirds for the 2021 season.

The 2016 ANZ Championship season was the ninth and last season of the ANZ Championship. The season began on 1 April 2016 and concluded on 4 July 2016. Southern Steel were minor premiers. However they subsequently lost the New Zealand Conference Final to Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic and were defeated in the semi-finals by Queensland Firebirds. With a team coached by Roselee Jencke, captained by Laura Geitz and featuring Romelda Aiken, Clare McMeniman and Kim Ravaillion, Firebirds won the Australian Conference, the Challenge Trophy and the overall championship. Firebirds became the first and only team to retain the title. In a repeat of 2015, Firebirds defeated New South Wales Swifts in both the Australian Conference Final and the Grand Final.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sunshine Coast Lightning</span> Australian netball team

Sunshine Coast Lightning are a professional Australian netball team based at the University of the Sunshine Coast. The team was formed in 2016 as a joint venture between the university and Melbourne Storm. Since 2017 they have played in Suncorp Super Netball. Lightning have played in three grand finals, winning premierships in 2017 and 2018.

Ameliaranne Ekenasio, previously known as Ameliaranne Wells, is a New Zealand netball international. In 2010 and 2011, Wells represented Australia at under-19 and under-21 levels. In 2014 she switched allegiances to New Zealand. She represented New Zealand at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and was a prominent member of the New Zealand team that won the 2019 Netball World Cup. She captained New Zealand when they won the 2021 Constellation Cup.

Gabrielle Simpson, also known as Gabi Simpson, is an Australia netball international. Simpson was vice-captain of the Australia team that won the silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Simpson was also a member of the Queensland Firebirds teams that won the 2015 and 2016 ANZ Championships. Since 2017, Simpson has captained Firebirds in Suncorp Super Netball. In 2017 she received the Liz Ellis Diamond award. She also sits on the board of the Australian Netball Players’ Association.

Roselee Jencke is a former Australia netball international and netball coach. As a player, Jencke was a member of the Australia teams that won the gold medal at the 1991 World Netball Championships and the silver medals at the 1985 World Games and the 1987 World Netball Championships. In 1992 she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia. Between 2009 and 2020, Jencke served as head coach of Queensland Firebirds. Between 2011 and 2016 she guided Firebirds to five ANZ Championship grand finals, winning three premierships in 2011, 2015 and 2016.

Macy Gardner is an Australian netball player who has played for Queensland Firebirds in Suncorp Super Netball and for Queensland Fusion in the Australian Netball League.

The 2015 Queensland Firebirds season saw the Queensland Firebirds netball team compete in the 2015 ANZ Championship. With a team coached by Roselee Jencke, captained by Laura Geitz and featuring Romelda Aiken, Clare McMeniman and Kim Ravaillion, Firebirds won the Australian Conference, the Challenge Trophy, the minor premiership and the overall championship. Firebirds narrowly defeated New South Wales Swifts in both the Australian Conference final and the Grand Final on their way to effectively winning four titles.

The Sapphire Series is a state netball league featuring teams from Queensland. The league is organised by Netball Queensland. The current semi-professional league was first played for during the 2019 season. It replaced earlier state leagues organised by Netball Queensland as the top level netball competition in Queensland. On a national level, the HART Sapphire Series is effectively a third level league. Reserve teams compete in the Ruby Series. The Firebirds Futures are the representative team of the Sapphire Series. They originally played as Queensland Fusion, and then in 2021 were re-branded Queensland Sapphires after the Sapphire Series.

Hulita Veve, previously known as Hulita Haukinima, is an Tongan netball player. Haukinima was a member of the Queensland Firebirds team that won the 2016 ANZ Championship. She has also played for Queensland Fusion in the Australian Netball League and for Firebirds in Suncorp Super Netball. In 2014 she was captain of the Queensland under-19 team that won their Australian National Netball Championships tournament. In 2019 she captained the QUT Wildcats team that won the inaugural HART Sapphire Series title.
