The fossils of Besano

In 1993 the fossil of a Triassic aquatic reptile dating back to about 235 million years was found near the town. It was named Besanosaurus . Many other fossils have emerged from the fossiliferous field of Besano-Monte San Giorgio, known and appreciated since the mid-nineteenth century. [3]

<i>Birgeria</i> Extinct genus of fishes

Birgeria is a genus of carnivorous marine ray-finned fish from the Triassic period. Birgeria had a global distribution. Fossils were found in Madagascar, Spitsbergen, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, China, Russia, Canada and Nevada, United States. The oldest fossils are from Griesbachian aged beds of the Wordie Creek Formation of East Greenland.

Cuasso al Monte is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Varese in the Italian region Lombardy, located about 50 kilometres (31 mi) northwest of Milan and about 6 kilometres (4 mi) northeast of Varese. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 3,252 and an area of 16.4 square kilometres (6.3 sq mi). It takes the name from the Lombard term Chaos, (den). Whereas the term "al monte" refers to the fact that it is situated at the foot of Monte Piambello.
