Beth Quist, an American vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. She has a 4-octave soprano voice and was previously the lead soprano for Cirque du Soleil.

Early life

Quist is from Boulder, Colorado. [1] She began playing piano at the age of two years and wrote her first song when she was eight years old. [2]

Career

Quist performs as a solo artist and with several bands. [3] She has a 4-octave soprano voice and plays dumbek, guitar, flute, keyboards, the piano, the santour or hammered dulcimer. [1] [4] Her music combines combines her Western upbringing with influences from the Balkans, India, and the Middle East. [1] She is signed to the label Magnatune, an independent record label that was formed by John Buckman to release and help promote her music. [5] [4] She released her first solo album, Lucidity, in 1995. [2]

In 1997, she became a member of Bobby McFerrin's Voicestra and has performed on his solo albums Circlesongs (1997) and VOCAbuLarieS (2010). [3] [2] She has also worked with the Grammy Award-winning new age musician Kitarō and has recorded with Roger Fisher, the fouding guitar player of the band Heart. Quist is a member of the Sherefé, a Balkan Middle Eastern music band formed in Boulder, Colorado in the mid-1990s. [12] She provides vocals and plays the hammered dulcimer and riq in Sherefé. [12] [1] She was a member of the Seattle band Children of the Revolution and was an original member of The Guarneri Underground (now known as the Geoffrey Castle Band). [13] [4]

In 2012, Quist joined Cirque du Soleil's KA show in Las Vegas as its lead soprano and as a writer and instrumentalist. [3] [4] [1] When she left the show, its music had to be changed; the score had been written around her skills and Cirque du Soleil was unable to find another artist who could sing and play the required array of instruments. [5]

She has composed more than fifty scores for dance, film, and other media. She contributed music to The Two Escobars , a documentary that was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2011. [3] In 2014, she composed music for dancer Brette Adams' "Nightshade" performance. [14] Quist also teaches music workshops. [1]

Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chávarri del Castillo, known as Yma Sumac, was a Peruvian-born vocalist, composer, producer, actress and model. "Ima sumaq" means "how beautiful" in Quechua. She has also been called Queen of Exotica and is considered a pioneer of world music. She won a Guinness World Record for the Greatest Range of Musical Value in 1956. Her debut album, Voice of the Xtabay (1950), peaked at number one in the Billboard 200, and its single, "Virgin of the Sun God ", reached number one on the UK Singles Chart. It sold a million copies worldwide, becoming an international success in the 1950s. Albums like Legend of the Sun Virgin (1952), Fuego del Ande (1959) and Mambo! (1955), were other successes.

Mystère is one of six resident Cirque du Soleil shows in Las Vegas, Nevada. Held in a custom theatre at the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino, the show was first performed on 25 December 1993, making it the company's longest running show. As with many Cirque du Soleil productions, Mystère features a mixture of circus skills, dance, elaborate sets, opera, worldbeat music, and street theatre-style comedy. Featuring a musical score composed by René Dupéré and Benoît Jutras, the show was created under the direction of Franco Dragone.

<i>La Nouba</i> Cirque du Soleil show

La Nouba was a Cirque du Soleil show that ran for 19 years in a custom-built, freestanding theater at Disney Springs' West Side at the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. It was a contemporary circus performance featuring acrobats, gymnasts, and other skilled performers. The show's creation was directed by Franco Dragone, who also directed many of Cirque du Soleil's earlier shows. Its title derives from the French phrase faire la nouba, meaning "to party" or "to live it up".

Opus III were an English electronic music group who had success on the UK Singles and U.S. Dance charts. The group consisted of vocalist Kirsty Hawkshaw and producers/musicians Kevin Dodds, Ian Munro and Nigel Walton. The group members promoted a strong environmental and feminist message through their lyrics, album liner notes and photo and video imagery. Their biggest hit was "It's a Fine Day", which reached number five in the United Kingdom in February 1992. The song had previously been recorded by the singer Jane in 1983, and its lyrics had been taken from a song by poet Edward Barton.

Viva Elvis was the seventh resident Cirque du Soleil show on the Las Vegas Strip. It resided at the Aria Resort & Casino and premiered on February 19, 2010. The show closed on August 31, 2012. Cirque du Soleil partnered with Elvis Presley Enterprises to produce this show, similar to how they partnered with The Beatles' Apple Corps Ltd to produce the resident show Love at the Mirage.

Banana Shpeel was a touring stage show created by Cirque du Soleil which premiered on November 19, 2009, at the Chicago Theater. The vaudeville-based show was directed by David Shiner, who also created Koozå. The show lasted a less than a year, only playing in Chicago, New York City, and Toronto. The show was cancelled in 2010, due to its poor reviews and many complications.

Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour was the first of two theatrical productions by Cirque du Soleil to combine the music of Michael Jackson with Cirque du Soleil's signature acrobatic performance style. The show was written and directed by Jamie King and produced in partnership with the Estate of Michael Jackson. The arena show—which is very similar to a rock concert—began its tour on October 2, 2011, in Montreal. After touring North America for one year, Immortal continued through Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East before returning to North America in February 2014 for a total of 501 shows from 141 cities. It is the most financially successful Cirque production and highest grossing tribute show in history.

<i>Michael Jackson: One</i>

Michael Jackson: One is the second Michael Jackson-based production in Cirque du Soleil's roster, after Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour. It was announced to the public and media on February 21, 2013. In their continuing partnership with the Jackson estate, One evokes the entertainer's artistic style in several manners. The new production began previews on May 23, 2013 and the official world premiere was June 29, 2013 at the Mandalay Bay on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. Like The Immortal World Tour, this production was also written and directed by Jamie King. "Sneak peek" videos were released on the internet revealing numbers of the production, including "2 Bad", "Stranger in Moscow", "Bad", and "Smooth Criminal". However, unlike Immortal, the show only uses prerecorded tracks, with no live orchestra. This show is also the most dance-driven Cirque du Soleil show.
