Bethel Hospital is a private Baptist hospital based in Vuyyuru, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, India. It is a member of Council of Christian Hospitals. It is perhaps the oldest hospital in the region. [1]

History

The Canadian Baptist Mission was initiated at the request of the missionary Thomas Gabriel. As a result of this, in 1868, Rev. A. V. Timpany and Rev. John McLaurin arrived in Ramayapatnam [2] and then moved to Kakinada in 1874 after the mission itself began.

In 1904, Dr. Gertrude Hulet [3] arrived in Vuyyuru and went on to open a dispensary [4] in 1906. [5] The formation of the hospital's current administrative structure was started by the Krishna district collector in 1923. [6] A chapel was built in memory of Dr. Hulet in 1957.

What had started as a clinic in 1904 [3] soon developed into a large hospital, taking care of patients in coastal parts of the Krishna district. A number of wards, case rooms and operating rooms were built. [7] By 1955, hospital became a general hospital. [6]

Evelyn Eaton started a midwifery training course in 1941 and, by 1956, it became an Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) course. [6] More than 500 nurses have graduated from this school. [3]

Bethel Hospital is a member of the Council of Christian Hospitals, Pithapuram, and the Christian Medical Association of India, New Delhi [8] [9]

The Hospital also networks and collaborates with Christian Medical College, Vellore [10]

Andhra Christian Theological College (ACTC) is a seminary in Telangana which was founded in 1964. It is affiliated with India's first university, the Senate of Serampore College (University), and has degree-granting authority under a Danish charter ratified by the government of West Bengal. ACTC is on the Hussain Sagar canal (north) in Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from the Secunderabad Junction railway station.

Telugu Christians or Telugu Kraistava are a religious community who form the third-largest religious minority in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. According to the 2001 Census of India, there are over a million Christians in Andhra Pradesh, constituting around 1.51% of the state's population. This is a decrease from the 1971 census figure which put the percentage of Christians in state as 2%, and this decrease is mainly a result of low birth rates and emigration.

Acharya A. B. Masilamani or Abel Boanerges Masilamani (1914–1990) was a Golden Jubilee Baptist pastor and evangelist on whom parallels had been drawn comparing his ecclesiastical ministry with that of Saint Paul. The Mar Thoma Syrian Church, one of the Saint Thomas Christian Churches founded by Thomas the Apostle in the first century which holds the annual Maramon Conventions used to have Masilamani preach at its conventions since the 1970s. During one such Maramon Convention held in 1983 at Maramon, Masilamani was one of the main speaker who spoke on Christology in the presence of the two patriarchs of the Mar Thoma Church, Alexander Mar Thoma and Thomas Mar Athanius.

K. Frederick Paradesi Babu is the current President of the Protestant Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church Society. He had his ministerial formation at the Andhra Christian Theological College, Hyderabad, a Seminary affiliated to the nation's first university, the Senate of Serampore College (University).

Chetti Devasahayam was the Registrar of the nation's first University, the Senate of Serampore College (University) who was in office from 1960 through 1975. It was during Devasahayam's tenure at the University that ecumenism gave way to merger of seminaries and the formation of special purpose entities throughout India. It was Devasahayam who gave the inaugural address when the Andhra Christian Theological College was formed in 1964 in Rajahmundry.

M. Theophilus was a Baptist Patriarch and Spiritual Formator of the Protestant Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars, a major congregation along the Bay of Bengal in Andhra Pradesh, India that extends from Srikakulam District in the northern tip through Guntur District in the middle. Theophilus taught at the Baptist Theological Seminary, Kakinada during the period 1926–1946 and was also Senator of India's first University, the Senate of Serampore College (University) during 1942–1946 taking forward not only the theological concerns of the university but also the concerns of Serampore College, which as a dual University affiliated entity, had the arts, science and commerce faculties affiliated to the University of Calcutta. In matters of Church union, Theophilus actively cooperated with the National Council of Churches in India that not only incorporated the Protestant and the Oriental Orthodox Churches but also reached out to the Catholics.

G. D. Melanchthon (1934–1994) was a Silver Jubilee Priest hailing from Protestant Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church Society who taught Religions, at United Theological College, Bangalore from 1968 till the latter half of eighties until his career was brought to an abrupt end in 1988 on being stricken with paralysis. Melanchthon used to be quite active among the academic community along with Chrysostom Arangaden, Arvind P. Nirmal and others in not only delivering scholarly talks, but also in contributing research articles and reviewing new titles.

Perapogu Joseph was a military chaplain in the Indian Army Corps of EME and a counselor who taught students in Serampore College, Serampore and Andhra Christian Theological College, Secunderabad.

M. B. Ranjit was an Indian Police Officer of Andhra Pradesh Police. He served for nearly four decades in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana areas. His career began in the latter half of the Sixties. Among the Police fraternity, he is known as a popular, systematic and sincere person, who earned a name for himself in Andhra Pradesh. He retired in 2000, putting in nearly four decades of policing.
