Clarice Lora Betty Main (née Moore; born January 1929) is a former New Zealand diver, who represented her country at the 1950 British Empire Games.
Born in January 1929, [1] Main was educated at St Hilda's Collegiate School in Dunedin where she was the senior swimming and diving champion in 1945 and 1946. [2] [3] [4] She was also active in surf lifesaving. [5] She went on to study medicine at the University of Otago, graduating MB ChB in 1955. [6]
Moore began swimming with the Dunedin Swimming Club as a junior in the 1930s. [7] In 1943, she won the South Island junior girls' diving title, [8] and in 1945 she was runner-up in the national intermediate girls' diving championship. [5] Moore won the New Zealand national women's diving championship in 1949, [9] and then competed for New Zealand at the 1950 British Empire Games in Auckland. [10] She finished eighth in the women's 3 m springboard. [11] Subsequently, Moore won the New Zealand women's tower diving championship in 1952 and 1953. [9]
Moore was married to Brian William Main; he died in 2009. [12] Betty Main worked as an anaesthetist at Dunedin Hospital, and lives in retirement in Wānaka. [12]
Jean Hurring was a swimmer from New Zealand. She won a bronze medal in the 100 m backstroke at the 1952 Summer Olympics.
Moana Pool is the largest swimming pool in the southern half of New Zealand's South Island. It is located at the corner of Littlebourne Road and Upper Stuart Street close to Otago Boys' High School, on the slopes of Roslyn, overlooking the centre of the city of Dunedin. The pool complex can be seen from much of the city, and commands extensive views over central and coastal Dunedin.
Sir Peter Heatly, was a Scottish diver and Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation. He competed in the 3 m springboard and 10 m platform at the 1948 and 1952 Olympics, at the 1950, 1954 and 1958 British Empire Games, and at the 1954 European Championships. He won five British Empire Games medals and one European medal, while his best Olympic result was fifth place in 1948. Heatly was knighted in 1990, before being inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in 2002, the Scottish Swimming Hall of Fame in 2010 and the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2016.
New Zealand at the 1990 Commonwealth Games was represented by a team of 224 competitors and 61 officials. Selection of the team for the Games in Auckland, New Zealand, was the responsibility of the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association. New Zealand's flagbearer at the opening ceremony was swimmer Anthony Mosse, and at the closing ceremony was cyclist Gary Anderson. The New Zealand team finished fourth on the medal table, winning a total of 58 medals, 17 of which were gold.
Barbara Ellen Talmage is an American diver. She won a gold medal in springboard diving at the 1963 Pan American Games in São Paulo and competed at the 1964 Summer Olympics and the 1968 Summer Olympics.
