Bev Smith

Beverly "Bev" Smith (born April 4, 1960) is a Canadian basketball player and coach.

Smith played college basketball at the Oregon Ducks, where she was named a Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-American in 1981 and 1982. [1] Her 2004 team made the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, after finishing 2nd in the Pacific-10 Conference; that was her second 20-win season. [2] Oregon defeated Texas Christian University to advance to the 2nd round. In 2016, Smith was named to the Pac-12 women's basketball all-century team. [3]

Smith led Canada's national team to a medal in the 1999 Pan American Games. [4] While playing at Oregon, the team had a record of 93–19. She held school records for points in a game (38), points in a season (632), points in a career (2,063), rebounds in a game (26), rebounds in a season (376), rebounds in a career (1,362), and assists in a career (443). [5]

Smith played in Italian clubs Vicenza (1982-1985, 1989–1990) and Ferrara (1986-1988), winning three Italian championships and two European Cups. [6]

She was the women's basketball program head coach at the Oregon Ducks from 2001 to 2009, having succeeded controversial coach Jody Runge. She posted a Pac-10 conference record of 61-83 and an overall record of 123-121 [2] The 2002 team won the Women's National Invitation Tournament Championship. The 2005 team won a first-round game in the NCAA tournament. [7] The 2007 team received a bye in the WNIT and won a second-round game.

Later she became the assistant coach for the Canadian Women's National Team [4] and helped lead the team to back-to-back gold medals in 2015 at the Pan American Games in Toronto and the FIBA Americas in Edmonton, qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. [8]

She is a member of the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame. [6] In 2004, Smith was elected to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, located in Knoxville, Tennessee. [9]

The Oregon Ducks men's basketball team is an intercollegiate basketball program that competes in the NCAA Division I and is a member of the Pac-12 Conference, representing the University of Oregon. The Ducks play their home games at Matthew Knight Arena, which has a capacity of 12,364. Then coached by Howard Hobson, Oregon won the first NCAA men's basketball national championship in 1939. They again reached the Final Four in 2017 under head coach Dana Altman, marking the longest span between appearances in NCAA history. The Ducks have made the NCAA tournament 17 times, and have won eight conference championships.

Kelly Lee Graves is the current head women's basketball coach at the University of Oregon. Previously, Graves was the head women's basketball coach at St. Mary's from 1997 to 2000, as well as Gonzaga University from 2000 to 2014. He was formerly an assistant coach for the Portland Pilots (1994–1997) and St. Mary Gaels, where he later got his first head coaching stint with the Gaels from 1997 to 2000. From the 2004–2005 season to the 2013–2014 season, he guided Gonzaga to ten consecutive West Coast Conference regular season titles. The 2007 team went 13–1 in conference play, and later won the WCC conference tournament. The school also received its first ever NCAA tournament appearance. He was named WCC co-coach of the year for his accomplishments. In 2005, 2010, and 2011, Gonzaga went undefeated in WCC regular season play.

Valeria Olivia Whiting is a former collegiate and professional basketball player. She played center for the Stanford Cardinal women's basketball during her four years of pre-med study at Stanford. Among other collegiate honors, she was named Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Year two years in a row. She also played for several USA National teams as well as professional women's basketball teams.

The 1978–79 Oregon Ducks women's basketball team represented the sixth official season for the University of Oregon's Varsity women's basketball program. The Ducks were coached by Elwin Heiny in his third year as head coach. The team finished the regular season undefeated and posted a 68–67 win over the internationally ranked No. 5 Republic of North Korea National team in a late-season exhibition game. Their final record was 23-2 with losses to Oregon State in the AIAW Region 9 championship tournament and South Carolina. The team led the league in points per game (84.6), boosted by the largest margin of victory in program history: a 121–40 win over the University of Hawaii.

Kathy Arendsen is an American softball head coach and former professional player. Arendsen pitched for Holland Christian High School, where she won the state championship, before embarking on a successful collegiate and professional career. During her college years, Arendsen pitched for Texas Woman's University and California State University, Chico, where she led both teams to national championships. In recognition of her efforts, she received the 1978 Broderick Award as the nation's outstanding female athlete in softball. She was also selected to pitch for Team USA at the 1979 and 1983 Pan American Games, winning a gold and silver medal respectively.

She played college basketball at Oregon. She represented Germany at the 2018 FIBA U18 Women's European Championship and won a gold medal.

The 2022–23 Oregon Ducks men's basketball team represented the University of Oregon during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Ducks, led by 13th-year head coach Dana Altman, played their home games at Matthew Knight Arena as members of the Pac–12 Conference. They finished the season 18–13, 12–8 in Pac-12 play to finish in fourth place. As the No. 4 seed in the Pac-12 tournament, they defeated Washington State in the quarterfinals before losing to UCLA in the semifinal round. They received an invitation to the National Invitation Tournament, where they defeated UC Irvine in the first round and UCF in the second round, before losing to Wisconsin in the quarterfinals.

Taya Hanson is a Canadian college basketball player for Oregon and a member of the Canada women's national basketball team. She previously played college basketball at Arizona State.
