Bibhusita Das is an Indian marine engineer. She is first Odia woman to become a marine engineer. [1] [2] [3] Das is the first woman from Odisha to serve as an officer on a shipping vessel. Early life and education

Bibhusita Das was born and brought up in Cuttack, Odisha. [4] Her father Kurunakar Das is a retired Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) employee. [6] The youngest of four sisters, she credits her parents for their support [5] and encouragement. [2]

My mother and father always encouraged us to study and said there was no difference between a girl and a boy. All my three sisters are engineers. But I am the only marine engineer.

Das completed a four-year Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) at C. V. Raman College of Engineering, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha in 2007. She was the only one of the 7 girls in her engineering group to opt for on-board sailing. [3]

Career

After working as a lecturer in Tirunelveli for six months, she was hired by the Shipping Corporation of India and opted for an on-board position. [3]

In 2012, she was promoted to third engineer at the Shipping Corporation of India. [1] In 2013, as the Marine Engineer of the cargo ship MV Biswamahal, Bibhusita Das was felicitated by the Port Trust, after the ship arrived in Paradip port en route from Australia. [2]

Her work can involve hard physical labor managing the ship's machinery. Voyages can last up to six months at a time. [2] Her job has enabled her to travel to many countries including Australia, South Africa, Turkey, Britain, and Germany. [1] [2]

Personal life

As of 2018 she lived at Koel Nagar, Rourkela. [3]

The Kalinga script or Southern Nagari is a Brahmic script used in the region of what is now modern-day Odisha, India and was primarily used to write Odia language in the inscriptions of the kingdom of Kalinga which was under the reign of early Eastern Ganga dynasty. By the 12th century, with the defeat of the Somavamshi dynasty by the Eastern Ganga monarch Anantavarman Chodaganga and the subsequent reunification of the Trikalinga(the three regions of ancient Odra- Kalinga, Utkala and Dakshina Koshala) region, the Kalinga script got replaced by the Siddhaṃ script-derived Proto-Oriya script which became the ancestor of the modern Odia script.

Odia literature is literature written in the Odia language, mostly from the Indian state of Odisha. The modern Odia language is mostly formed from Tadbhava words with significant Sanskrit (Tatsama) influences, along with loanwords from Desaja, English, Hindustani (Hindi/Urdu), Persian, and Arabic. Its earliest written texts date from around 1000 CE. The earliest Odia newspaper was Utkala Deepika, first published on August 4, 1866.

Sarala Devi was an Indian independence activist, feminist, social activist, politician and writer. She was the first Odia woman to join the Non-cooperation movement in 1921 and the first Odia woman delegate of the Indian National Congress. Haata Dhari Chalutha is a 2013 Oriya romantic movie directed by Himansu Parija. It was produced by Anubhav Mohanty & Anuprash Mohanty. The film stars with Anubhav Mohanty and Barsha Priyadarshini in lead roles. The music was given by Prem Anand. The film released on 14 June 2013. The film was a remake of Telugu film Solo.

Mayadhar Swain is an Odia writer from Odisha, India.

Kanhu Charan Mohanty was an Indian Odia language novelist who wrote fifty-six novels in a career spanning over six decades from 1930 to 1985. He is considered "one of the most popular and celebrated novelists of Odisa". Mohanty was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958 for his novel, Kaa, published in 1956, and was one of the fellows of the Sahitya Akademi. Mohanty died on 6 April 1994 at the age of 87.

Sitadevi Khadanga (1902–1983) was an Odia dramatist, novelist, poet and translator from Odisha, India. Her writings mostly set in rural Odisha which depicts social problems of the area in the 20th-century. Her contribution to Odia poetry is considered to be a landmark in Odia literature.

Basanta Kumari Patnaik was an Odia language novelist, short story writer, playwright, poet and essayist; considered to be one of the pioneers in Odia literature. She became famous for her three novels: Amada Bata, Chorabali and Alibha Chita, among which Amada Bata has been adapted into an Odia film by same name.

Arindam Roy is an actor who works predominately in Odia cinema apart from a few Bengali films.

Pupul Bhuyan is an Indian actress, television presenter, and model who has mostly appeared in Odia films, telefilms, daily shops, and reality shows. She started her film career in Ollywood in 2013 through the 1st Odia 3D film Kaunri Kanya along with Kavya Keeran. In 2018, she was crowned as the winner at Opera Mrs. India Global pageant.
