Bicharak (English: The Judge) is a Bengali psychological drama film directed by Pravat Mukhopadhyay and produced by Arundhati Devi based on a same name novel of Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay and music is composed by Timir Bhattachariya [1] [2] This film was released in 1959 [3] under the banner of Prabhat Productions and received National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali in 1960. [4] The film starred Uttam Kumar and Arundhati Mukherjee in lead role and others like Chhabi Biswas, Pahadi Sanyal and Chandrabati Devi in important supporting role. The film showed Uttam Kumar one of the best performance ever as a Judge. This is also remembered as one of the best film in his career and best ever in Bengali Cinema history. [5] The film also received huge critically acclaimed and saw the commercial success.
The plot unfolds with a series of flashbacks which reveals a judge's past and hidden secrets. Gyanendra, a judge lives with his wife Sarama. Being the Judge, with every trial of similar cases he remembers his past, the truth about his questionable actions. Gyanendra always recalls when he was a popular lawyer, married to Sumoti, a suspicious and rude lady. But he had a weak feelings for his professor's daughter Sarama. One day Gyanendra's house was burnt and his first wife Sumoti dies. Gyanendra could not make any attempt to save her, perhaps he was unable bear Sumati further. Thereafter he marries Sarama and becomes a judge, but realizes his crime and the past haunts him much.

Kabuliwala is a 1957 Bengali film directed by Tapan Sinha and based on the eponymous 1892 short story by the Bengali writer Rabindranath Tagore.
Tapan Sinha was one of the most prominent Indian film directors of his time forming a legendary quartet with Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen. He was primarily a Bengali filmmaker who worked both in Hindi cinema and Bengali cinema, directing films like Kabuliwala (1957), Louha-Kapat, Sagina Mahato (1970), Apanjan (1968), Kshudhita Pashan and children's film Safed Haathi (1978) and Aaj Ka Robinhood. Sinha started his career in 1946, as a sound engineer with New Theatres film production house in Kolkata, then in 1950 left for England where he worked at Pinewood Studios for next two years, before returning home to start his six decade long career in Indian cinema, making films in Bengali, Hindi and Oriya languages, straddling genres from social realism, family drama, labor rights, to children's fantasy films. He was one of the acclaimed filmmakers of Parallel Cinema movement of India.
Saptapadi is a 1961 Indian Bengali-language romantic drama film by Ajoy Kar, starring Suchitra Sen, Uttam Kumar, Chhabi Biswas and Chhaya Debi. Music direction and playback singing for Kumar voice was by Hemanta Mukherjee and in Sen's voice by Sandhya Mukherjee. The story is based on a 1958 novel by Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay. This is regarded as one of the greatest romantic film in the history of Bengali cinema. The film become highest grossing Bengali film in 1961. It was featured retrospectively at the 45th IFFI in the "homage section" of Indian panorama.

The movie was remade in Hindi as Kala Pani in 1958.
