The MTV Video Music Award for Best Collaboration was first introduced to the MTV Video Music Awards in 2007 under the name Most Earthshattering Collaboration, as the VMAs were revamped and a few new categories were added to the show. When MTV brought the VMAs back to their old format in 2008, this category did not return. It was not until 2010 that the category was reintroduced under the name Best Collaboration.

Colombian performer Shakira was the first female artist to win the accolade in 2011 and also won the following year in 2012. Puerto Rican singer and songwriter Bad Bunny is the only artist to have one the accolade three years back to back. American performer Jenni Rivera is the only artist to win the award posthumously, following her death in 2012. American performer Prince Royce is the most nominated artist without a win, with five unsuccessful nominations.

BTS are the most awarded artist with four wins, all of which were done consecutively.
The MTV Europe Music Award for Best Collaboration is an award category at the MTV Europe Music Awards. The award was first presented in 2015 and not given from 2016 to 2018, making a return in 2019. Karol G and Rosalía are the only artists to win this award twice, Karol G for "Tusa" with Nicki Minaj in 2020 and "TQG" with Shakira in 2023, and Rosalía for "Con Altura" with J Balvin and El Guincho in 2019 and "New Woman" with Lisa in 2024.
