Billie Breaux (born June 23,1936) [1] is an American politician who served as a member of the Indiana Senate from 1990 to 2006. Representing the 34th district,she was succeeded by her daughter,Jean Breaux.
Breaux was born in Indianapolis,Indiana. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from West Virginia State College and a Master of Science from Indiana University Bloomington.
A teacher,Breaux served as the president of the Indianapolis Education Association. She later became a civil rights activist,and was present when Robert F. Kennedy announced the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. [2] Breaux was instrumental in the effort to recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a statewide holiday in Indiana. [3] Breaux was elected to the Indiana Senate in 1990,where she was a member of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus and served as Assistant Majority Whip. [4] She left office in 2006,and was succeeded by her daughter,Jean Breaux.
Breaux later served as the Marion County Auditor. [5] [6]
In 2022,after a dispute over endorsements,Breaux ran an ultimately unsuccessful primary candidacy for Marion County Clerk against Marion County Democratic Party Chair Kate Sweeney Bell. Bell received the endorsement that was disputed. [7] [8]

Julia May Carson was an American politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives for Indiana's 7th congressional district from 1997 until her death in 2007. Carson was the first woman and first African American to represent Indianapolis in the U.S. Congress. She was also the second African American woman elected to Congress from Indiana,after Katie Hall,and her grandson AndréCarson succeeded to her seat following her death.
Katie Beatrice Hall was an American educator in Gary,Indiana,and a politician who served as a U.S. Representative from Indiana from 1982 to 1985. When Hall was sworn into federal office on November 2,1982,she became the first black woman from Indiana elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Hall represented Indiana's 1st Congressional District in the final months of the 97th Congress and an entire two-year term in the 98th Congress from 1983 to 1985. She is best known for sponsoring legislation and leading efforts on the floor of the U.S. House in 1983 to make Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a national holiday after previous efforts had failed. H.R. 3706 to establish the third Monday in January as a federal holiday in King's honor was introduced in July 1983 and passed in the House on August 2,1983. President Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law on November 2,1983.

Indiana's 7th congressional district special election of 2008 took place March 11,2008 to fill the seat in the United States House of Representatives left vacant by the death of 7th district representative Julia Carson (D) on December 15,2007. Karen Rae Tallian is an American politician and attorney who served as a member of the Indiana Senate for the 4th district from December 2005 through October 2021. She was re-elected in 2006,2010 and 2014. While serving in the Senate,Tallian,a progressive,has supported medicinal prescription and the decriminalization of marijuana,and has authored bills in its favor. In 2015,she announced her candidacy for governor of Indiana but dropped out that same year,well before the primary season. Tallian was also a candidate for the Democratic Party nomination for Indiana Attorney General in 2020,but lost the nomination to Jonathan Weinzapfel.
AndréD. Carson is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for Indiana's 7th congressional district since 2008. A member of the Democratic Party,his district includes the northern four-fifths of Indianapolis,including Downtown Indianapolis. He became the dean of Indiana's congressional delegation after Representative Pete Visclosky retired in 2021.

Susan Lynn Brooks is an American prosecutor and politician. She is a Republican and the former U.S. Representative for Indiana's 5th congressional district. She was elected in 2012. The district includes the northern fifth of Indianapolis,as well as many of the city's affluent northern and eastern suburbs. Brooks served as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana from 2001 to 2007.

Malone was formerly Director of Diversity and board member for Indy Pride. As an advocate for transgender and LGBT rights,Malone has campaigned against state laws in Indiana,and is frequently cited as a spokesperson in the media.
Jesse Brown is an American politician and former teacher from Indianapolis,Indiana currently serving on the Indianapolis City-County Council for the 13th District,representing portions of Downtown Indianapolis,Martindale–Brightwood,Near Northside,Near Eastside,Eastside,Christian Park and Irvington. On November 7,2023,Brown was elected to the Indianapolis City-County Council with 78% of the total vote. He is a member of the Indianapolis-affiliate of the Democratic Socialists of America,which endorsed him during the 2023 election.
