Bisheshwar Prasad Keshari, popularly known as Dr BP Keshari, was an educationist and writer. He was a prominent leader in the movement for a separate state, Jharkhand. [1] [2]

Life

Early life

Bisheshwar Prasad Keshari was born in Pithoria in Ranchi district in Bihar Province on 1 July 1933 to Shivnarayan Sahu and Lagan Devi in a Kesarwani family. [3] He completed the M.A and PhD from Ranchi University. [4] According to him, when he was in intermediate of Ranchi College, he attained wedding of relatives in Pithoria. When he heard the nagpuri song sung by women, he was astounded at the depth of meaning and decided to collect unpublished nagpuri songs. [5]

Career

He started his career as an assistant professor in Daltonganj in 1957. He established the Tribal and Regional language department at Ranchi University along with Ram Dayal Munda in the 1980s. [6] He was professor in the Tribal and regional language department. He was a prominent leader in the movement for a separate state, Jharkhand. He was a member of the "Jharkhand coordinator committee" along with Ram Dayal Munda and Binod Bihari Mahato in 1989, which was instrumental in coordination between various fractions of the Jharkhand movement. JCC sent a memorandum to form the Jharkhand state in 1988. As a result, Central government formed a committee on the Jharkhand matter in 1989. It stressed the need of greater allocation of the development funds for the area and The Jharkhand Area Autonomous Council formed in 1994 which regulated in the areas of agriculture, rural health, public work, public health and minerals. [7]

He established "Nagpuri Sansthan" on 17 February 2002 with his wife Shanti Keshri in Pithoria. In the library of Nagpuri Sansthan, there are 520 books in tribal and regional languages, 515 books and 192 magazines of English literature, 1556 books of Hindi literature and 3392 magazines in Nagpuri. Also, there are 117 poems of 67 poets of the Nagpuri language, biographies of 645 Nagpuri poets and 35000 poems and 4000 folk songs composed by them. [4]

Last days and death

He was suffering from pneumonia. He died in Ranchi at the age of 83. His cremation was performed with the state honour in Pithoria and attended by minister Chandra Prakash Choudhary, Sudesh Mahto, women's commission chairman Mahua Maji and associates from AJSU Party, Surya Singh Besra and Deo Sharan Bhagat. Lal Ranvijay Nath Shahdeo, was a lawyer, poet, writer and political activist. He was a prominent leader of the movement for a separate Jharkhand state. He was president of the Jharkhand Party. He wrote several Nagpuri poems, songs and slogans for the Jharkhand movement. At the end, the Central government of India accepted to form a new state, Jharkhand. He changed the state name Vananchal to Jharkhand after a debate with Prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He was the recipient of the Jharkhand Ratna Award for his contribution to the movement for a separate state of Jharkhand.

Madhu Mansoori Hasmukh is an Indian singer, songwriter and activist. He had written and sung several Nagpuri songs for movement of separate state Jharkhand. In 2011,the Government of Jharkhand awarded him Jharkhand Ratna Award. In 2020, he received Padma Shri in field of Arts.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sonroopa Vishal</span>

Sonroopa Vishal is Indian writer, poet and author, who writes in the Hindi language. The State Government of Uttar Pradesh awarded her with the Harivansh Rai Bachchan Navodit Geetkaar Award in 2015 and Jagadish Gupta Sarjana Award in 2019. Sonroopa Vishal has published three books, including Likhna Zaruri Hai (2014) and America Aur 45 Din (2018), and co-authored several books.

Girdhari Ram Gonjhu was a prominent scholar of the Nagpuri language. He was former chairman of the Tribal-Regional Language Department at Ranchi University in state of Jharkhand. He was awarded Padma Shri for his contribution in the field of literature and education in the Jharkhand posthumously in 2022.

Sahani Upendra Pal Singh was an Indian writer. He was one of the prominent writers in the Nagpuri-language in the modern period. He translated "Ram Charit Manas" in Nagpuri. He wrote around 20 books in nagpuri. He was awarded "Jharkhand Ratna", "Praful Samman", "Seva Ratna" and "BCCL Koyal Bharti Rajbhasha award".

Nagpuri literature refers to literature in the Nagpuri language, the language of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Odisha. The earliest literature started in the nagpuri language when the Nagvanshi king and king of Ramgarh Raj started writing poetry in the 17th century. Since then, various literature has been written. Although in the present century, Nagpuri was never considered worthy of literary development. But some dedicated writers have engaged in writing short stories, plays and poetry.

Bhuneshwar Anuj (1936–2021) was an Indian journalist, writer and scholar. He is known for his journalism and scholarly works in the Nagpuri language. He also has a prominent role in the separate state movement of Jharkhand. He was central adviser of Lok Seva Samiti.

Shravan Kumar Goswami was a prominent writer and scholar of Hindi and Nagpuri language. He was professor of Hindi at Ranchi University. He was awarded Radhakrishna Award for his Hindi novel Jangal Tantram.

Shakuntala Mishra is an Indian writer. She is a prominent writer in Nagpuri language. She has written many books in Nagpuri including Nagpuri Sadani Vyakaran a grammar book of Nagpuri, Sadani Nagpuri-Hindi Sabdkosh a dictionary of Nagpuri, Sato Nadi Par a story. Her books are included in university Nagpuri studies. She has been awarded Jharkhand Ratna, Praful Samman, Prernasrot Samman by Doordarshan Ranchi, Katha Samman by Government of Jharkhand, Bidushi Samman by Government of Bihar.

Praful Kumar Rai was an Indian writer. He was one of the prominent writers of the Nagpuri-language in the modern period. He had a prominent role in publication in the Nagpuri language and in the formation of Nagpuri Bhasha Parishad in 1960.

Mahavir Nayak, is a nagpuri singer and songwriter. He is an exponent of Theth Nagpuri music, which is a genre of typical Nagpuri music, based on traditional Nagpuri folk music. He is the recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Award (2022), Lok Kala Ratna Award (2014) and Praful Samman (2019) for his contribution in folk music.
