Blackchords are an alternative rock band from Melbourne, Australia, consisting of Nick Milwright (vox, guitar & keys), Damian Cazaly (lead guitar), Tristan Courtney (bass)and Guy Kable (guitar)
Blackchords were formed as an indie rock band in early 2005 [1] by lead singer Nick Milwright and lead guitarist Damian Cazaly. Milwright's music career began at high school in Eltham, where he learned classical guitar. After finishing school, Milwright aged 17, left to pursue a career in the military. [2] but after becoming disheartened with the armed services, Milwright changed paths completely, deciding to pursue a career in ballet. He was accepted in the Victorian College of the Arts, with a promising career in dance, before an accident in which he tore ligaments in his knee put him in hospital. Aged 20, Milwright headed to London for an eight-month sojourn. Late at night, he would climb onto the roof of his shared flat with his acoustic guitar and write songs – this was the start of his love of songwriting. Returning to Melbourne, he realised he was completely taken by music. In late 2004 Milwright met guitarist Damian Cazaly and the band was formed a few months later.
Blackchords first came to prominence in 2006 when, as an unsigned band, their video for "Broken Bones" won first place at Melbourne's St Kilda Film Festival, SoundKILDA completion beating a host of established artists. In 2009, the same song went on to become a double finalist in the International Songwriting Competition, for best rock song and video. It was also nominated for the 2011 St Helier, Online Music Awards in the Best Video category.
Their debut, self-titled album Blackchords, was produced by ex-Blindside & The Earthmen guitarist Nick Batterham and was released via Australian indie record label Dust Devil Music on 24 April 2009. The album was widely acclaimed in both Australia and the UK from the likes of Rolling Stone Magazine , Clash Magazine , CMU Daily [3] and Australian music magazine Reverb, who described the album as "one of the best Australian debut releases." The first single "At World's End" was named Track Of The Day by QTheMusic.com, [4] chosen as Record Of The Day, by Record Of The Day UK, [5] and 'Track Of The Week' by Alex Baker on Kerrang Radio. In the UK, the band visited Kerrang's studio to record an acoustic session and interview. Further sessions followed for Michelle Zenner at Salford City Radio and viral music channel Balcony TV. [6] The video was also added to the NME TV and MTV video playlists in the UK.
In 2009 after the album launch at the Esplanade Hotel (Melbourne) the band embarked on an Australian East-coast tour [7] and then onto the UK playing shows in London and Paris. The band toured the UK for the second time in 2010 in support of their second single "Pretty Little Thing" and appeared at The Great Escape Festival [8] and Liverpool Sound City [9] music festivals, alongside a host of other new Australian artists including Hungry Kids of Hungary, Dappled Cities & Bluejuice, as part of the Aussie BBQ shows.
In October 2010, Blackchords played at the One Movement Festival in Perth [10] and were personally invited by Ian Haug, the guitarist from Powderfinger to support Powderfinger [11] [12] at their last ever Melbourne show at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl alongside Jet. Kicking off 2011, the band played at the Australian Open Men's Finals in January. [13]
Working independently and with limited funds, Blackchords took to crowd and fan funding website Pozible to raise the money for the recording and thankfully, their fans were keen to help and thus raised half of the recording costs for the album. [14] In January 2012, Blackchords, under the guidance of sound engineer Mark Stanley of Red Room Studios, started the long process of recording their second studio album. [15] Recording took place in a country shed transformed into a recording studio in regional Victoria. After recording some demos, Stanley recruited Mercury Prize nominated and Grammy winning producer/mixer, David Odlum [16] [17] (former guitarist with Irish band The Frames, producer- The Frames, Gemma Hayes, Luka Bloom, Josh Ritter among others) With Odlum guiding the band to produce a thoroughly international sounding album. The second album A Thin Line was released in April 2013 by ABC Music, distributed through Universal.
A Thin Line adds more synth sounds to the broody pop they've become synonymous with. The album deals with darker themes of loss and confusion, while still providing contrast with songs of a higher energy. [18] The theme of the album revolves around fighting everyday distraction and endeavouring to follow a narrow path ("a thin line") to your ambitions. Renee Jones of Themusic.com.au says of the album: "By keeping on a thin line and avoiding distraction, the band have created a 10-track release that ironically distracts you from your own life and takes you to a different world." [19]
On 28 January 2013, a benefit concert was held for the 2013 Tasmanian bushfires relief at The Tote Hotel. The line-up included Blackchords, Witch Hats, Monique Brumby, Tom Lyngcoln (The Nation Blue), Mike Noga (The Drones), Andy Hazel (Paradise Motel) with former AFL stars Brendon and Michael Gale and Matthew Richardson assisting with BBQ cooking duties. Over $5,500 was raised for The Red Cross Appeal. [20] [21] [22]
March 2013 saw Blackchords tour North America and Canada playing SXSW in Austin, Texas followed by shows in LA, Houston and New York. The band then headed to Canadian Music Week where they played shows in Toronto and Hamilton. [23]
The first single "Dance, Dance, Dance" was released on 21 May 2012. The track was given away as a free download from their BandCamp page. The single is a double a-side, backed by a re-recorded version of "As Night Falls", originally written for the 2010 Australian feature film Blame . [24] The song was performed at The Workers Club in Fitzroy Melbourne, followed by a tour playing shows in Tasmania, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane, also playing Victorian regional shows with The Medics. [25] The music video for "Dance, Dance, Dance" was filmed during recording at The Barra Shed in the Yarra Valley and provides a behind-the-scenes look at the band during the recording process.
The second single "Oh No" was released in February 2013 at the Ding Dong Lounge in Melbourne. The accompanying music video was produced and directed by acclaimed cinematographers Tov Belling and Katie Milwright. The clip features dancers choreographed by Stephanie Lake. [26]
In 2010, Blackchords were asked by film producer Michael Ormond Robinson to contribute a song to the soundtrack to the Australian film Blame . [27] Blame premiered at The Melbourne International Film Festival and was released nationally in June 2011. Despite no formal release plans for the single in the UK, the track "As Night Falls" was added to the daytime schedule of National DAB new music station Amazing Radio and ended up climbing to number two on their chart, the highest ever position for an Australian artist. The single "Pretty Little Thing" was included on the soundtrack to US movie Janie Jones . [28]

Powderfinger were an Australian rock band formed in Brisbane in 1989. From 1992 until their break-up in 2010, the line-up consisted of vocalist Bernard Fanning, guitarists Darren Middleton and Ian Haug, bass guitarist John Collins and drummer Jon Coghill. The group's third studio album Internationalist peaked at No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart in September 1998. They followed with four more number-one studio albums in a row: Odyssey Number Five, Vulture Street, Dream Days at the Hotel Existence and Golden Rule. Their top-ten hit singles are "My Happiness" (2000), "(Baby I've Got You) On My Mind" (2003) and "Lost and Running" (2007). Powderfinger earned a total of eighteen ARIA Awards, making them the second-most awarded band behind Silverchair. Jet is an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne, Victoria, in 2001. For most of the band's existence, it has consisted of Cameron Muncey, Mark Wilson (bass), and brothers Nic and Chris Cester. They have sold 6.5 million records worldwide, releasing three studio albums from their initial run: 2003's Get Born, 2006's Shine On and 2009's Shaka Rock. The band dissolved in 2012, reformed in 2016 for a run of shows and then split again at the end of 2019. The band reunited for a second time in 2023 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Get Born.

Tea & Sympathy is the debut solo album by Australian musician Bernard Fanning. It was released on 31 October 2005, by Dew Process records while Powderfinger—Fanning's main band—were on hiatus. Contrary to Powderfinger's usual alternative style, the album blends alternative and country-folk music. Most of the record was written after the cancer-related death of his brother in 2002. His brother's death coincided with the end of Fanning's twelve-year relationship with his partner, and both events were instrumental in his move away from his typically political and socially lyrical subject matter.
The Getaway Plan are an Australian rock music band, which formed in 2004. Founding mainstays are Matthew Wright on lead vocals, piano and rhythm guitar and Clint Ellis on lead guitar. They were joined in 2014 by Dan Maio on drums, and his brother, Mike Maio on bass guitar. Former long-term members are Dave Anderson on bass guitar and Aaron Barnett on drums and percussion.
David Odlum is an Irish music producer, engineer, guitarist, and drummer who has worked and played with Academy Award winners and Mercury Prize nominees. Originally a member of Kíla, a band which was founded during his schooldays at Coláiste Eoin, he left them and joined rock group The Frames, fronted by the Academy Award-winner Glen Hansard, and with whom he played guitar from 1990 until 2002. Since leaving the band, he has pursued a career as a music producer. Odlum has established a long running association with singer-songwriter Gemma Hayes, producing her Mercury Prize-nominated debut album Night on My Side, as well as later albums The Hollow of Morning, Let It Break and an as-yet untitled fifth album due in 2014. Odlum also played briefly with her.
Dream Days at the Hotel Existence is the sixth studio album by Australian rock band Powderfinger, released by Universal Music on 2 June 2007 in Australia, 19 November 2007 in the United Kingdom, and 11 November 2008 in the United States on the Dew Process label. It was released in Australia with a limited edition bonus DVD, titled Powderfinger's First XI, featuring eleven music videos spanning the band's career, from the first single, "Tail" to "Bless My Soul", the band's latest single before the release of the album. A collector's edition, including a CD and DVD, was released on 18 April 2008.
"Lost and Running" is a song by Australian rock group Powderfinger. It was released as the first single from the group's sixth studio album Dream Days at the Hotel Existence. It is the band's twenty-second single and peaked at No. 5 on the Australian chart, the group's second highest-charting single after "My Happiness". It made its radio debut on 13 April on Triple J and was released to wide radio play and the band's MySpace on 16 April 2007. The single was officially released on 12 May 2007.

The song was written by Powderfinger lead singer Bernard Fanning, and influenced by bassist John Collins. The riff was then developed by guitarist Ian Haug. The song is about reconciling difficulties and arguments, rather than shifting the blame.
"Nobody Sees" is a song by Powderfinger from their sixth album Dream Days at the Hotel Existence. It is the third single from the album and was released in Australia on 1 December 2007. The announcement that it would be released as a single came at the same time as releasing the music video to the internet on the official Universal Records website.
"Who Really Cares (Featuring the Sound of Insanity)" is a song by Powderfinger from their sixth album Dream Days at the Hotel Existence. It is the fourth single and final single from the album and was released in Australia in March 2008. The band's publicist, Ms. Fanclub, announced on 27 February that the single would be released to radioplay in the following week, without specifying a date. In her announcement, she also noted that a music video will be released at about the same time. The music video was then released in mid-March; however, the single's release was then announced as 31 March.
Golden Rule is the seventh and final studio album by Australian rock band Powderfinger, released on 13 November 2009. The album reunites the band with producer Nick DiDia, who produced several of the group's previous albums including, Internationalist, Odyssey Number Five and Vulture Street.
Twelve Foot Ninja are an Australian heavy metal band from Melbourne, Victoria. They released their debut album Silent Machine in 2012. The band consists of Kin (vocals), Russ (drums), Stevic, and Rohan. They won Best New Talent at the 2014 Revolver Golden Gods Awards as well as two listener-voted awards from SiriusXM's Liquid Metal the year before. The band broke a world record for the most amount crowdfunded for a music video. Their first headline tour of Europe in April 2017 sold out five of the seven UK shows. In mid 2022, the band announced an "indefinite hiatus". Although, they are working on an acoustic album of Twelve Foot Ninja material. The release date is yet to be announced.
The Bombay Royale is an 11-piece Australian band fronted by singers Parvyn Kaur Singh and Shourov Bhattacharya and led by Andy Williamson. The band performs original music that blends funk, disco and pop music with the classical and folk music of India, much like the soundtracks of 1960s and 1970s Bollywood movies. The band was conceived by musical director Andy Williamson who also plays saxophone and flute.
Joe Matera is an Australian guitarist, rock journalist and author. In addition to a solo career, Matera is the guitarist in the Sweden-based rock band Rough Rockers, and was formerly the lead guitarist of Australian famous pop rock band Geisha between 2007 and 2010. Before joining Geisha, Matera was the lead guitarist of classic rock band Double Vision, from 2003 to 2008. He's currently working as a solo artist, releasing solo instrumental albums and contributing guitar on various recordings around the world. In 2022, he collaborated with the British band, The Korgis, on an album for the Japanese market.
Gang of Youths are an Australian alternative rock band from Sydney, now based in London, that formed in 2011. The group consists of David Le'aupepe, Max Dunn, Jung Kim, Donnie Berzestowski and Tom Hobden. Their debut studio album, The Positions (2015), received multiple ARIA Award nominations and peaked at number five on the Australian Albums Chart. It spawned certified platinum single "Magnolia", which has been described as their breakthrough hit. In 2017, the band released their second album, Go Farther in Lightness, preceded by their first Australian top 50 single "Let Me Down Easy". The album debuted at number one in Australia and was nominated for eight awards at the 2017 ARIA Music Awards, winning four – Album of the Year, Best Group, Best Rock Album, and Producer of the Year. In the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2017, the album held three positions in the top 10, a feat only achieved twice before.
