Blokland is a hamlet in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Liemeer, and lies about 12 km northeast of Alphen aan den Rijn. [1]

South Holland Province of the Netherlands

South Holland is a province of the Netherlands with a population of just over 3.6 million as of 2015 and a population density of about 1,300/km2 (3,400/sq mi), making it the country's most populous province and one of the world's most densely populated areas. Situated on the North Sea in the west of the Netherlands, South Holland covers an area of 3,403 km2 (1,314 sq mi), of which 585 km2 (226 sq mi) is water. It borders North Holland to the north, Utrecht and Gelderland to the east, and North Brabant and Zeeland to the south. The provincial capital is The Hague, while its largest city is Rotterdam.

Liemeer municipality of the Netherlands

Liemeer is a former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. It was merged into the municipality of Nieuwkoop on January 1, 2007.

The area Blokland, in which the hamlet is located, used to be part of Uithoorn, but became part of Mijdrecht in 1811. [2] The eastern half of the area, Polder Blokland, still is part of the municipality of De Ronde Venen in the province of Utrecht (which includes Mijdrecht); the western half of the area, part of Polder Zevenhoven, is part of Liemeer in the province South Holland. Confusingly, the hamlet itself lies in Polder Zevenhoven; the houses in Polder Blokland are part of the hamlets Kromme Mijdrecht and De Hoef.

A polder is a low-lying tract of land enclosed by dikes that form an artificial hydrological entity, meaning it has no connection with outside water other than through manually operated devices. There are three types of polder:

  1. Land reclaimed from a body of water, such as a lake or the sea bed
  2. Flood plains separated from the sea or river by a dike
  3. Marshes separated from the surrounding water by a dike and subsequently drained; these are also known as koogs especially in Germany
