Boarders is a British teen comedy-drama television series created by Daniel Lawrence Taylor, centred around the lives of five young Black teens who earn scholarships into the prestigious boarding school of St. Gilbert's. The six-part series is developed by Studio Lambert in association with All3Media International for BBC Three. It premiered on 20 February 2024.

Development

In August 2022, it was announced BBC Three had commissioned a six-part series titled Boarders from Daniel Lawrence Taylor and Studio Lambert. In addition to Lawrence Taylor, the series would be executive produced by Susan Hogg and Maddie Sinclair for Studio Lambert, and Ayela Butt and Gaynor Holmes for the BBC. Joining him in the writers room were Emma Dennis-Edwards, Yemi Oyefuwa, and Ryan Calais Cameron. [1]

A second series was announced on 4 June 2024 via the BBC's official media channels. It was confirmed the main cast would reprise their roles. [2] In July 2024, Tubi officially boarded the project as a co-producer for its second series due to the "incredible response" to series 1. [3]

Casting

In July 2023, it was announced Josh Tedeku, Jodie Campbell, and Myles Kamwendo would star in the series alongside Sekou Diaby and Aruna Jalloh. Creator Daniel Lawrence Taylor would appear in the series as a mentor. Also joining the cast were Derek Riddell, Niky Wardley, Harry Gilby, Tallulah Greive, Rosie Graham, Georgina Sadler, and Assa Kanoute. [4]

Principal photography took place in Bristol. Clifton College served as the fictional St Gilbert's in the series. Other filming locations included Ashton Court and Redcliffe. [5]

The five teens find life at their new school challenging. Jaheim is soon warring with troublemaker Rupert, while Leah runs into conflict with the headmaster. Omar will do whatever it takes to prove a secret society is real, while Femi finds some unlikely friends, who encourage him to take part in a bizarre school ritual. Toby is misjudged by his new peers, but turns it to his advantage to impress a girl.

Rebellion is in the air as Bernard cracks down on all the students to make sure the annual fundraiser runs smoothly. Jaheim gets an offer he can’t refuse, but Leah is sceptical about his new position.

Toby and Abby question their situationship, and Femi is tricked by his so-called friends. It’s time for everyone to decide where their loyalties lie.

Reception

Boarders received positive reviews from critics. Rotten Tomatoes reported an approval rating of 100% based on 8 reviews. [7] Leila Latif of The Guardian gave Boarders four out of five stars and called it "packed with future megastars" in line with the Skins ensemble, singling out Campbell, Diaby, Tedeku, and Kanoute's performances in particular. [8] Louisa Mellor for Den of Geek recommended the series to Sex Education fans. [9] The Daily Telegraph's Poppie Platt also gave the series four stars, calling it "razor-sharp". [10] Morgan Cormack of Radio Times commended how Boarders balances serious, heavy topics and moments of learning with comedy and fun. [11]

Derren Ronald Litten is an English comedy writer, actor and director, best known as the creator and writer of the sitcom Benidorm. He co-wrote The Catherine Tate Show, in which he plays several characters in the first two series and the 2005 Christmas special. He has acted in many TV comedy and drama series including Perfect World, French and Saunders, Spaced, EastEnders, Coronation Street, and Pie in the Sky with Richard Griffiths. Litten's first sitcom was Benidorm, which began airing on ITV in 2007. The series follows various groups of holiday makers and staff in the all-inclusive Solana resort located in Benidorm. The series received strong ratings and later extended its runtime, running for 10 series ending in 2018.

<i>The Catherine Tate Show</i> series 1 Season of television series

The first series of British television sketch comedy The Catherine Tate Show premiered on BBC Two on 16 February 2004. It consists of six episodes and concluded on 22 March 2004. In the first series audiences are introduced to various characters portrayed by Catherine Tate, including Joannie 'Nan' Taylor, Lauren Cooper and Bernie, the Irish nurse. The series was entirely written by Tate alongside Mathew Horne, Derren Litten, Aschlin Ditta, Arthur Mathews and Bruce Mackinnon.

Flatmates is a British coming of age comedy drama series broadcast on BBC iPlayer and starring Tallulah Greive, Theo Stevenson and Richard Wisker reprising their roles from the CBBC series Millie Inbetween, although the series is intended for a much older audience. The film centres on the eponymous Nan character who travels cross-country to visit her dying sister, and includes several flashbacks to their upbringing and early adulthood.

Timewasters is a British science-fiction comedy television programme, first broadcast on ITV2 in 2017 with a second series broadcast in 2019. It was created by Daniel Lawrence Taylor and written by Taylor and Barunka O'Shaughnessy. It was produced for ITV Studios by Kenton Allen and Matthew Justice of Big Talk Productions. The episodes were directed by George Kane. The programme stars Taylor, Adelayo Adedayo, Samson Kayo and Kadiff Kirwan as the members of an unsuccessful all-black South London jazz quartet who time-travel to the 1920s, and later the 1950s, visiting the Jazz Age and post-war cool jazz period while experiencing culture clashes as they manoeuvre in the unfamiliar eras.

Queen of Oz is a British television sitcom developed by and starring Catherine Tate as the scandalous Queen Georgiana, a disgraced member of a fictional British royal family sent to rule Australia. The first series, consisting of six episodes, co-written by Tate and Jeff Gutheim, produced by Michele Bennett and directed by Christiaan Van Vuuren, premiered on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on 16 June 2023, and in Australia on ABC TV and ABC iview on 21 June 2023.

Joshua Kwabena Banin Tedeku is a British actor. He is known for his roles in Rapman's Netflix superhero series Supacell and the BBC Three coming-of-age teen comedy-drama Boarders.
