The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with NCAA Division I. Its current 11 full members are located in four Northeastern states: Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Maryland. It was announced on October 23, 2023 that Sacred Heart University and Merrimack College will join the conference beginning in the 2024-25 season.
Richard Vincent Guerin is an American former professional basketball player and coach. He played with the National Basketball Association's (NBA) New York Knicks from 1956 to 1963 and was a player-coach of the St. Louis/Atlanta Hawks franchise where he spent nine years. On February 15, 2013, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced that Guerin had been elected as one of its 2013 inductees.
The 1980 NBA draft was the 34th annual draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The draft was held on June 10, 1980, at the Sheraton Centre Hotel & Towers, before the 1980–81 season. In this draft, 23 NBA teams took turns selecting amateur U.S. college basketball players and other eligible players, including international players. The first two picks in the draft belonged to the teams that finished last in each conference, with the order determined by a coin flip. The Boston Celtics, who obtained the Detroit Pistons' first-round pick in a trade, won the coin flip and were awarded the first overall pick, while the Utah Jazz were awarded the second pick. The Celtics then traded the first pick to the Golden State Warriors before the draft. The remaining first-round picks and the subsequent rounds were assigned to teams in reverse order of their win–loss record in the previous season. An expansion franchise, the Dallas Mavericks, took part in the NBA Draft for the first time and were assigned the eleventh pick in each round. A player who had finished his four-year college eligibility was automatically eligible for selection. Before the draft, five college underclassmen announced that they would leave college early and would be eligible for selection. The draft consisted of 10 rounds comprising the selection of 214 players. This draft has the distinction of being the first NBA Draft to be televised.
Andrew Michael "Handy Andy" Phillip was an American professional basketball player. Born in Granite City, Illinois, Phillip had an 11-year career and played for the Chicago Stags of the Basketball Association of America and the Philadelphia Warriors, Fort Wayne Pistons and Boston Celtics, of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Steven Dwayne Burtt is a retired American professional basketball player. The 6'2" point guard played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) sporadically from 1984 until 1993. He also had an established playing career overseas. Born in New York City, Burtt played high school basketball for Charles Evans Hughes before enrolling to Iona to play for the Gaels. Burtt now teaches at Bronx Collegiate Academy
Kenneth Lloyd Sailors was an American professional basketball player active in the 1940s and early 1950s. A 5 ft 10 in (1.78 m) guard, he is notable for inventing the jump shot as an alternative to the two-handed, flat-footed set shot.

The Lt. Frank J. Haggerty Award is given to the All-New York Metropolitan NCAA Division I men's college basketball player of the year, presented by the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and the Met Basketball Writers Association (MBWA). First presented in 1936, it is arguably the oldest and most prestigious award given to a metropolitan area player. Two schools with previous winners are no longer classified as Division I – CCNY and NYU are now Division III and are therefore ineligible to have future winners.

Michael Scott Machado is an American-Brazilian professional basketball player for Avtodor Saratov of the VTB United League. He played college basketball for Iona College and represents the Brazilian national basketball team.
Tom Abatemarco is an American college basketball coach, currently an assistant for the Iona Gaels of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Abatemarco has previously been a head coach at Lamar, Drake and Sacramento State. He was also an assistant to Jim Valvano on the 1983 national champion NC State team and spent time as a professional assistant in the Women's National Basketball Association and the NBA Development League.
Matthew Richard Ryan is an American professional basketball player for the New Orleans Pelicans of the National Basketball Association (NBA), on a two-way contract with the Birmingham Squadron of the NBA G League. He played college basketball for Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and Chattanooga. He began his pro career in the NBA G League, before signing a two-way contract with the Boston Celtics.
The 1983–84 Iona Gaels men's basketball team represented Iona College during the 1983–84 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Gaels, led fourth-year by head coach Pat Kennedy, played their home games at the Hynes Athletic Center and were members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Gaals finished in a three-way tie atop the MAAC regular season standings, and would go on to win the MAAC Basketball tournament to receive an automatic bid to the 1984 NCAA tournament. As the No. 10 seed in the East region, the Gaels lost to No. 7 seed and eventual Final Four participant Virginia in the opening round.
The 1979–80 Iona Gaels men's basketball team represented Iona College during the 1979–80 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Gaels, led by fifth-year head coach Jim Valvano, played their home games at the Hynes Athletic Center. The Gaels won the ECAC Metro Basketball tournament to receive a bid to the 1980 NCAA tournament. As the No. 6 seed in the East region, the Gaels defeated No. 11 seed Holy Cross in the opening round – the first and only NCAA Tournament victory in school history. Iona was narrowly defeated by No. 3 seed Georgetown in the round of 32. As of the 2020–21 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, this is the furthest any Iona men's team has ever advanced in the NCAA Tournament.
The 1984–85 Old Dominion Monarchs men's basketball team represented Old Dominion University in the 1984–85 college basketball season. This was head coach Paul Webb's 10th and final season at Old Dominion. The Monarchs compete in the Sun Belt Conference and played their home games at the ODU Fieldhouse. They finished the season 19–12, 9–5 in Sun Belt play to finish in third place during the regular season. They reached the championship game of the 1985 Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. As No. 12 seed in the East Region where they were beaten by 5 seed SMU in the opening round.
