The Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (BPYO) is the youth orchestra of the Boston Philharmonic. Created in 2012, the tuition-free orchestra consists of musicians between the ages of 12-21. The BPYO performs an annual concert series in Boston as well as international tours and has released two commercial recordings. The founder and current conductor of the orchestra is Benjamin Zander. The BPYO was founded in 2012 by Benjamin Zander, the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. The inaugural 2012–13 season of the BPYO culminated in a five-city concert tour of the Netherlands, featuring a performance of Mahler's Second Symphony in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. [2] In December 2013, the orchestra made its Carnegie Hall debut with Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5, [3] a performance that is now released on a Linn Records recording. [4] In the summer of 2015, the BPYO embarked on a two-week tour of Germany, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic, performing in concert halls including Smetana Hall, the Rudolfinium, and the Philharmonie. [5] [6] In June 2016, BPYO returned to Carnegie Hall for two concerts, before embarking on a concert tour to Spain. In 2017, BPYO toured Peru, Argentina, and Uruguay.
The BPYO is known for performing some of the most difficult pieces in the classical repertoire, with a focus on 19th and 20th century music.[ citation needed ] It has performed with many soloists including Anna Fedorova, Alisa Weilerstein, George Li, Jonah Ellsworth, Natalia Gutman, Alwyn Mellor, InMo Yang, and Ayano Ninomiya. For the 2016–17 season, the BPYO commissioned a piece by American composer Michael Gandolfi. [7]
The BPYO consists of roughly 120 musicians between the ages of 12 and 21 in the Greater Boston Area, with musicians coming from as far as New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York, New Jersey, and Maine. The orchestra is composed of an estimated 40% college students and 60% high school students. The college musicians attend schools such as New England Conservatory, Harvard University, Tufts University, Boston University, The Boston Conservatory, Northeastern University, and The Juilliard School. The orchestra rehearses weekly at the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology and receives coaching from musicians of the Boston Symphony and Boston Philharmonic orchestras.[ citation needed ]
The BPYO performs at least three concerts a season in Boston. Performances take place in venues such as Symphony Hall, and Sanders Theatre. The 2014-2015 season included their semiannual concerto competition for members in the orchestra and performances of Wagner's Siegfried, [9] Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, [10] and Schoenberg's Five Pieces for Orchestra, among others. The 2015-2016 season includes performances of The Rite of Spring, [11] La mer, [12] Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, [13] and Mahler's Symphony No. 1. [14]
The orchestra frequently tours, often internationally. These include tours to the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Spain, Peru, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and two tours to Carnegie Hall. [15] The orchestra made its debut at Young Euro Classic in 2018. [16]
Some members of the orchestra also participate in the Boston Philharmonic's outreach program, Crescendo!. [17] Through this program, musicians are able to perform for and teach local students in the Boston area.

The Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP) is the oldest youth orchestra in the United States, established in 1924 as the Portland Junior Symphony (PJS). Now based in Portland, Oregon, the orchestra's origin dates back to 1910, when music teacher Mary V. Dodge began playing music for local children in Burns, Oregon. Dodge purchased instruments for the children and organized the orchestra, which would become known as the Sagebrush Symphony Orchestra. After touring the state, including a performance at the Oregon State Fair in Salem, the orchestra disbanded in 1918 when Dodge moved to Portland. There, Dodge opened a violin school and became music director of the Irvington School Orchestra.

James Lowe is an orchestra conductor and current Music Director of the Spokane Symphony in Spokane, WA, beginning in the 2019–2020 season. He assumed his role of Chief Conductor of the Prussian Chamber Orchestra for the 2015/16 season. His work as Artistic Director of the Hallé Harmony Youth Orchestra was featured in a four-part documentary shown in the UK on Channel 4 in 2010. A recipient of the Bernard Haitink Fund for Young Talent, Lowe is Principal Conductor of the Edinburgh Contemporary Music Ensemble, Principal Guest Conductor of Music for Everyone, Orchestras Advisor and conductor of the Senior Orchestra of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and held the position of Associate Conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Lowe is also Artistic Advisor of the Nottingham Youth Orchestra, with whom he began his orchestral career.

He graduated from Harvard College (AB) and the New England Conservatory (MM) as the first classical pianist in the schools' five-year AB/MM Joint Program, was named the Leverett House Artist in Residence for 2011–2012, and was one of the 15 Most Interesting Seniors of the Harvard College Class of 2011. The National Youth Orchestra of China is a full symphony youth orchestra composed of approximately 100 Chinese musicians aged 14 to 21 years old. He is the first prize winner of the 54th edition of the International Paganini Competition in Genoa, Italy in 2015 and the first prize winner of the Sibelius Competition in Helsinki, Finland in 2022. He is also the second prize winner in the senior division of the 2014 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists in Austin, Texas. In April 2016, he had made a debut at Carnegie Hall at the Weill Recital Hall with the Danish National Symphony conducted by Fabio Luisi.
