The men's light welterweight event was part of the boxing programme at the 1952 Summer Olympics. It was the inaugural Olympic event for the weight class and it allowed boxers of up to 63.5 kilograms to compete. Alfredo Cornejo Cuevas was a Chilean boxer, who won the gold medal in the welterweight division at the 1959 Pan American Games in Chicago, United States. In the same year he also won the world amateur welterweight title in Mexico City. He later fought four professional fights from 1961 to 1962. As an amateur, he was three times South American Champion; as a light welterweight in Montevideo, Uruguay, 1956, and in Santiago, Chile, 1957, and as a welterweight, in Lima, Peru, 1958. He also competed in the men's welterweight event at the 1960 Summer Olympics.

Alfonso Gerald Frazer is a former Panamanian boxer who held the Lineal and WBA Light welterweight titles. He competed in the men's featherweight event at the 1964 Summer Olympics.

Issake Dabore was a boxer from Niger who mainly fought in the light-welterweight and welterweight weight classes. Dabore competed at three Olympics; Tokyo 1964, Mexico City 1968 and Munich 1972. He was the first Nigerien person to compete at the Olympics and the first Nigerien to win an Olympic medal. Dabore won his Olympic medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics, where he won a bronze medal in the men's light-welterweight.

Tüvshinbat represented Mongolia in the Men's welterweight event at the 2012 Summer Olympics and defeated Gabonese Yannick Mitoumba in the first round but lost to Frenchman Alexis Vastine in the second round then in the 2016 Summer Olympics, beating Alberto Palmetta of Argentina in the first round and losing by split decision to Steven Donnelly in his second match.

Obisia “Golden Gloves” Nwankpa is a Nigerian professional light/light welterweight boxer of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s who won Nigerian lightweight title, African Boxing Union light welterweight title, and Commonwealth lightweight title, and was a challenger for World Boxing Council (WBC) light welterweight title against Saoul Mamby, his professional fighting weight varied from 135 lb, i.e. lightweight to 139+14 lb, i.e. light welterweight.

Light welterweights were limited to those boxers weighing a maximum of 63.5 kilograms (139.9 lbs). 35 boxers qualified for this category. Like all Olympic boxing events, the competition was a straight single-elimination tournament. Both semifinal losers were awarded bronze medals, so no boxers competed again after their first loss. Bouts consisted of six rounds each. Five judges scored each bout.
