Brandon Schuster (born 23 April 1998 in Fiji) is a Samoan swimmer who represented Samoa at the 2016 Summer Olympics. [1] He holds multiple Samoan records in swimming.

Personal life

Schuster is the son of Samoan politician Toeolesulusulu Cedric Schuster. [2] He was educated at Robert Louis Stevenson School in Apia, [3] and at California Baptist University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering in 2021. [4]

Swimming career

2012

At the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) he competed in the 50m, 100m and 200 metre freestyle events, the 50m, 100m and 200 metre backstroke events, the 50m, 100m and 200 metre breaststroke events, and the 100 metre individual medley.

2013

He represented Samoa at the 2013 World Aquatics Championships, racing in the 400m and 800 metre freestyle events.

2014

He represented Samoa at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, competing in the 50m, 100m, 200m and 400 metre freestyle, the 200 metre breaststroke and the 200 metre individual medley. [5]

At the 2014 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m), he raced in the 50m, 100m, 200m and 400 metre freestyle and the 200 metre breaststroke.

2015

Schuster competed at the 2015 Pacific Games, winning bronze in the 200 metre backstroke, and silver in the 400 metre individual medley race. He set a national record in the 400 metre individual medley. [6]

At the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games, held in Samoa, Schuster finished 6th in the 400 metre individual medley. [7]

He represented Samoa at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships, racing in the 200m and 400 metre freestyle events. [8]

2016

At the 2016 Oceania Swimming Championships, he won bronze in the 400 metre individual medley race, breaking his national record in the process. [6] He also competed in the 400m, 200 metre individual medley and 5 km races. [9]

At the 2016 Summer Olympics he competed in the Men's 200 m freestyle, where he ranked 46th with a time of 1:57.72. He did not advance to the semifinals.

2016 started competing with California Baptist University

2017

Competed at the NCAA division 2 Championships in Alabama for the California Baptist University and placed 4th in the 400im.

At the 2017 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary he competed in the men's 200 freestyle and 400im.

2018

Competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games for team Samoa and swam the 50, 100, 200 and 400 freestyle. As well as the 200 and 400 Individual Medley. He set Samoan records in the 50, 100 and 400 freestyle.

2019

Competed in the 2019 Pacific Games for team Samoa and was one of the Games torch runners for the opening. [10] He competed in multiple swimming events medaling with Gold for the 200 Backstroke and 400 Individual Medly, Silver in the 200 IM, as well as receiving Bronze in the 400 Freestyle and 200 Breaststroke. [11] [12] He was named and awarded the "Male Athlete of the 2019 Pacific Games" for his accolades in Samoa swimming and being a cornerstone in Pacific swimming development. [13] He then competed at eh FINA World Aquatics Championships swimming in the 400 IM and 200 IM.

At the ANOC Awards 2019 held in Doha, Qatar he was awarded with the "Best Male Athlete in Oceania" for 2019. [14] He was subsequently named one of the Samoa Observer's 2019 "people of the year". [3]

Kenneth King-him To was a Hong Kong Australian swimmer who practised individual medley, freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke. He won 6 medals at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics, was the male overall winner of the 2012 FINA Swimming World Cup and was a World Championships silver medallist. He was the holder of 16 Hong Kong national swimming records.

Sydney Pickrem is a Canadian competitive swimmer. Pickrem won a bronze medal in the 400m individual medley at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships. At the 2015 Pan American Games, she won a silver in the 400m and bronze in the 200m individual medleys. Pickrem won her first international medal competing at the 2013 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Dubai, winning the bronze in the 200m individual medley.

Corey Charles Garth Main is a New Zealand swimmer who qualified to compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the men's 100 metre backstroke.

Tilka Paljk is a Zambian swimmer. She competed in the women's 100 metre breaststroke event at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships. She also competed in three events at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Paljk was born in Postojna, Slovenia. Paljk was named the Zambia Sportswoman of the Year in 2018 and 2019, and was named in Forbes Africa 30 under 30 in 2021.

Kaylee Rochelle McKeown is an Australian swimmer and triple Olympic gold medalist. She is the world record holder in the long course 50 metre backstroke, 100 metre backstroke and both the long course and short course 200 metre backstroke. She won gold in both the 100 metre and 200 metre backstroke, as well as the 4×100 metre medley relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics staged in Tokyo in 2021. In 2023, she was named as the "Best Female Swimmer of the Year" by World Aquatics, after sweeping gold in all three events of backstroke at all three World Cup legs, held in Berlin, Athens and Budapest in October, 2023.

Rebecca Meder is a South African swimmer. She is the African record holder in the 100 metre individual medley and the South African record holder in the long course and short course 200 metre individual medley. At the 2022 World Short Course Championships, she placed sixth in the final of the 100 metre individual medley. In the 200 metre individual medley at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, she placed fourth in the final. At the 2021 African Championships, she won 11 gold medals, six in individual events and five in relay events, swimming on the finals relay for each of the five relay events.

Grayson Bell is an Australian swimmer. He competed in the men's 50 metre breaststroke event at the 2018 FINA World Swimming Championships, in Hangzhou, China.

Vladislav Gerasimenko is a Russian competitive swimmer. He is a world junior record holder in the long course 4×100 metre medley relay, swimming a 59.53 for the breaststroke portion of the relay. He is a four-time medalist at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics and a five-time medalist at the World Junior Swimming Championships, spanning breaststroke and freestyle disciplines. He competed at the 2021 European Short Course Swimming Championships, placing sixteenth in the preliminaries of the 50 metre breaststroke.
