Breaking News is a 2023 Pakistani television series directed by Kashif Nisar and written by Aamir Raza. [1] The series features Amar Khan, Hamza Sohail, Ali Safina and Haseeb Khan. [2] It is broadcast on Green Entertainment. [2]

Plot

To fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a journalist, Mishaal goes from Gujranwala to Lahore where she is hired as a news anchor by a news channel called JNN, after a lot of struggle. Her friend Hussain, who himself works as a content producer in a news channel 24/7, helps her to transform her dream into reality. As a content producer, he wants to remain sincere with his profession, but being surrounded by materialistic people and rating-oriented tactics makes it impossible for him. Mishaal realises the challenges of her profession when her predecessor, Ayesha, a single mother immersed in financial and personal difficulties, kills herself.

Naveed Khan, the anchor person of the show for which Hussain works as a content producer, has a traumatic past due to which he is involved in sensation rather than standing by truth and truth. His father committed suicide when he suffered at the hands of society due to reporting the truth. He promotes sensationalism by the budding issues and doesn't compromises on TRPs. Hussain resigns from his job to not work with him but the new programme director Azmat Bhagio invites him to his team and destines to do sincere journalism. He desires to bring the main issues to the forefront, which will bring viewership for the channel as well.

Mishaal starts hosting her talk show "Pucho" on JNN where she makes the corrupt and influential politicians accountable. However, she leaves it when Aziz Khan, an influential politician and the friend of the channel's owner is infuriated by her questioning and the owner interferes and misbehaves with her.

Hussain is busy in the case of the disappearance of Lakhi Bheel's family and the brother of Mian Aziz was involved in it. Azmat, on the other hand, cracks the relationship of the PR company of Naveed's wife, Tanya, with his program against the environmental minister. He blackmails the minister for his deeds to gain the contract of his PR for her wife's firm.

After firing from the channel, Mishaal returns to Gujranwala for the treatment of her father, a patient of dementia. The video of her conflict with the politician gets leaked and viral on internet. Hussain helps her in her father's treatment to bring her in Lahore and gets her a job in his channel when Azmat discusses about her confidence from the viral video. Mishaal is then given a show to host for which she starts working with Hussain and Azmat to bring justice to Lakhi Bheel. Mian Aziz doesn't come to the show to share his point of view and behaves rudely on the call. The episode gains huge limelight and becomes a breaking news. As a result of the show's airing, protests made on roads by the labours. Hussain was confused over this reaction due to the program. Azmat then handles another show to Mishaal.

Interior minister Hakim Ali learns that Azmat has arranged that fake protest. He offers him to work for him, supports him in his program and he will provide them with breaking news and funds in return. He wants to use the media as a tool against his rival Mian Aziz and for his personal benefits.

Naveed comes to know about Mishaal and Azmat's meeting with Hakim Khan in the latter's house by his assistant Roshan. Roshan's father Zahoor was a journalist and Hakim Khan had punished him and killed his brother and wife for reporting against her. Roshan wants to take revenge from him and tells the news of here to Naveed Khan secretly.

One of Mishaal and Hussain's video which was made by Aashir, the son of Mishaal's former landlord, gets viral on the internet when he goes to sell it to Naveed's assistant Abid but his phone is abducted. In response of the viral video where Hussain applies cake on Mishaal's face on her birthday, she is fired from the channel and her father dies shortly after. She than returns to the office after her father's death where Azmat sends her along with Hussian to cover the raid at the brickyard of Mian Aziz's brother to arrest him on Hakim Khan's order. Main Aziz successfully escapes there but the family of Lakhi Beel gets free. Hakim Khan gets furious over it as he had managed to arrest his brother but fails due to the leakage of the news of raid. Mishaal seeks help from Hakim Khan in her viral video case who makes Aashir arrested to click the video and also torchers Abid. After joining hands with Hakim Khan, Azmat prepares a show on Hakim Khan's order on the corruption of Akmal Randhawa, Hakim Khan's rival in the party. After the program, inquiries begin against him and against Taniya Khan as well who was involved in his PR. Naveed Khan re-signs from the channel due to Mishaal's programs against him and his wife. Naveed Khan's assistant, Shiraz, wants to take revenge on him for his friend Abid's enclosure and his insult. He leaks the news of Tanya's escape and she is arrested on the spot while fleeing for Dubai. Akmal Randhawa is designated from the provincial ministry of the environment and Hakim Khan replaces him as the mew minister.

Mishaal and Hussain realises distances between them when Mishaal moves from Hussain's house to an apartment. Naveed Khan sends proofs of Missahl and Azmat's meeting with Hakim Khan to Hussain after which he knows that Hakim Khan displaced Randhawa to earn to ministry of environment so that he can grant an allowance to build a chemical factory to Malik Razzaq.

Naveed Khan starts facing decline but Mian Aziz helps him in this situation. Her mother dies shortly after and Tanya's health begins to deteriorate in the jail. Naveed Khan starts looking for Zahoor, an unknown person who is helping him secretly by giving him the news of Hakim Khan.

In June 2022, it reported that Hamza Sohail and Amar Khan will play the leads in Green Entertainment's upcoming production Breaking News which will be directed by Kashif Nisar. [3] Khan was selected when Mohammed Ehteshamuddin who direct her in Dum Mastam suggested her to Nisar while he was working in Nisar's directed Kabuli Pulao . [4] While it was initially planned to be broadcast daily from 4 December 2023, [5] it then debuted on Green Entertainment on 9 December 2023 and was broadcast three times a week.

Reception

Critical reception

While reviewing its first five episodes, a reviewer from The News International noted the screenplay and dialogues while praised the main leads, Safina and Khan's acting performances and Nisar's direction. [6]
