Breathtaking is a British medical drama television series, written by Rachel Clarke, Jed Mercurio, and Prasanna Puwanarajah, based on Clarke's 2021 memoir of the same name on the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. It stars Joanne Froggatt and was directed by Craig Viveiros.

Synopsis

The series is set in a city hospital, and combines news footage from the early months of 2020 with portrayal of acute medical consultant Dr Abbey Henderson (Froggatt) and fellow frontline medical staff trying to save the lives of coronavirus patients, as the virus begins to overwhelm the NHS. Production

Rachel Clarke's memoir regarding being on the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic was released in 2021. Mecurio and Puwanarajah helped adapt the book for the screen; all three are qualified doctors. Puwanarajah previously worked with Clarke as a medical professional, and previously worked with Mercurio on television productions. [3] Craig Viveiros is director with HTM Television producing the three-part series along with Northern Ireland Screen. It is produced by Brian J. Falconer and executive produced by Mercurio, Clarke and Puwanarajah with ITV Studios an in-association producer and distributing internationally. [4]

Filming

Filming took place in Belfast and wrapped in the first half of 2023. [5] [6] Viveiros has reportedly used long, real-time sequences as part of the filming process to allow the audience to become “immersed”. [7]

Broadcast

The series was broadcast in the UK on ITV from 19 February 2024. [8]

Sean O'Grady of The Independent gave it four out of five stars. [9] Lucy Mangan of The Guardian awarded the first episode three out of five stars. [10]

A former hospital doctor and Royal Air Force officer, Mercurio has been ranked among UK television's leading writers. In 2017, Mercurio was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Television Society and the Baird Medal by RTS Midlands.

Jonathan Dow is a British actor and voiceover artist. He joined the National Youth Theatre at the age of 14, and after finishing his A levels he trained at the Guildhall Drama School. His first big television role was as Under Secretary Tim in No Job for a Lady with Penelope Keith.

Line of Duty is a British police procedural television series created by Jed Mercurio and produced by World Productions. On 26 June 2012, BBC Two began to broadcast the first series; it was its best-performing drama series in ten years with a consolidated audience of 4.1 million viewers. Broadcast of the second series began on 12 February 2014; its widespread public and critical acclaim led to the BBC commissioning a further two series. The third series began on 24 March 2016 on BBC Two; the following three series were broadcast on BBC One.

Critical, styled with a time-clock format as CR:IT:IC:AL, is a British medical drama series that aired on Sky 1 from 24 February to 19 May 2015. The series is set in a fictional major trauma centre (MTC), City General Hospital, which treats critically ill patients. Each episode is based on one patient and efforts to save his or her life within one hour. Created by Jed Mercurio, the drama follows the team of medical professionals whilst they make life-changing decisions. The title refers to critical condition, the most serious medical state, as well as the decisions and actions of the staff; everything done within the first hour is absolutely vital and could determine whether a patient lives or dies. The show was axed on 15 July 2015 after the series pulled in an average of 192,000 viewers.

<i>Liar</i> (TV series) British TV drama series (2017 & 2020)

Liar is a British thriller television series created by Harry and Jack Williams, and co-produced by ITV and SundanceTV. The series stars Joanne Froggatt and Ioan Gruffudd as two people whose initial attraction leads to far-reaching consequences for them and their friends and families. The series premiered on ITV on 11 September 2017, with the first series concluding on 16 October 2017. Upon its debut, it received positive reviews, with many critics praising the performances of Froggatt and Gruffudd. The programme was renewed for a second and final series, which premiered on 2 March 2020, concluding on 6 April 2020.

<i>Line of Duty</i> series 1 BBC police procedural TV show, 2012 series

The first series of the British police procedural television programme Line of Duty was broadcast on BBC Two between 26 June and 24 July 2012. The series follows the actions of the fictional Anti-Corruption Unit 12. AC-12 is led by Superintendent Ted Hastings, who recruits DS Steve Arnott and is backed by undercover officer DC Kate Fleming, as they lead an investigation into the corrupt actions of DCI Tony Gates. Gates leads Tactical Operations Unit 20 (TO-20), which includes DS Matthew "Dot" Cottan and DC Nigel Morton. Supporting characters include Jackie Laverty, Jools Gates, Chief Superintendent Derek Hilton, Chief Inspector Philip Osborne, and Tommy Hunter. The series was created and written by Jed Mercurio, who also serves as a producer. Filming took place in Birmingham in late 2011. Five episodes were directed by David Caffrey and Douglas Mackinnon with cinematographer Ruairi O'Brien. Despite being censured by Ofcom, the series received mostly positive reviews and was nominated for multiple awards, leading to the commission of a second series.

It depicts the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom based on testimonies of people in the Boris Johnson administration, on the various intergovernmental advisory groups, and in other affected British institutions such as care homes and hospitals. It premiered on Sky Atlantic and Now on 28 September 2022. Kenneth Branagh stars as Boris Johnson, and Ophelia Lovibond as Carrie Symonds.

Stephen, also titled Conviction: The Case of Stephen Lawrence, is a 2021 British three-part limited crime drama TV series. It is the sequel to the 1999 TV film The Murder of Stephen Lawrence. It stars Steve Coogan, Sharlene Whyte and Hugh Quarshie. It was written by Frank Cottrell Boyce and Joe Cottrell Boyce and directed by Alrick Riley. Trigger Point is a British crime thriller television series starring Vicky McClure as a police bomb disposal expert in London. It is created and written by Daniel Brierley. It was first broadcast on 23 January 2022 on ITV. In June 2022, it was announced that NBC Universal's Peacock streaming platform had picked up the series for US streaming starting on 8 July 2022.

DI Ray is a British police procedural television series created and written by Maya Sondhi and produced by Jed Mercurio. DI Ray stars Parminder Nagra in the title role as a Detective Inspector in a fictitious Birmingham-based police force. The cast also includes Gemma Whelan and Jamie Bamber. The first series of four episodes aired on ITV beginning 2 May 2022. The Canadian CBC title is D. I. Ray.

Maternal is a British medical drama television drama series created by Jacqui Honess-Martin. The series began broadcast on ITV on 16 January 2023, as well as on ITVX. The show was cancelled after one season.

Malpractice is a British medical drama television series, created and written by Grace Ofori-Attah. It stars Niamh Algar as a doctor embroiled in a medical scandal. It began airing on 23 April 2023 on ITV and ITVX. It has been commissioned for a second series.

Breathtaking: Inside the NHS in a Time of Pandemic, published by Little, Brown and Company in 2021, is a book written by British physician Rachel Clarke, based on the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom, and is the basis of a TV series of the same name.
