Brenda Lynn Jorgensen Dietrich is an American operations researcher, the Arthur and Helen Geoffrion Professor of Practice in the School of Operations Research at Cornell University. She has been Vice President of Business Analytics and Mathematical Sciences at IBM, and a president of INFORMS.

Education and career

After earning a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1980 from the University of North Carolina, with highest honors and Phi Beta Kappa, [1] [2] Dietrich went to Cornell University intending to get a graduate degree in mathematics. However, after working as an intern at the United States Department of Energy, she switched to operations research. [3] She completed her Ph.D. in 1986; her dissertation, A Unifying Interpretation of Several Combinatorial Dualities, was supervised by Robert G. Bland. [4]

Dietrich began working at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center while still a graduate student. [3] She was president of INFORMS in 2006, [1] and became a vice president at IBM in 2008. In 2017, she moved to Cornell as the Geoffrion Professor. [5]

Books

Dietrich is the co-author, with Emily C. Plachy and Maureen F. Norton, of the book Analytics Across the Enterprise: How IBM Realizes Business Value from Big Data and Analytics (IBM Press, 2014). She is the co-editor, with Rakesh V. Vohra, of Mathematics of the Internet: E-Auction and Markets (IMA Volumes in Mathematics and its Applications, Springer, 2002). [6]

Recognition

Dietrich was named an IBM Fellow in 2007. [5] [7] She is also a Fellow of INFORMS, elected in 2010, [8] [9] and was the 2010 winner of the INFORMS WORMS Award for the Advancement of Women in Operations Research and Management Science, and the 2021 winner of the INFORMS President's Award. [10]

In 2014 she was elected to the National Academy of Engineering "for contributions to engineering algorithms, frameworks, and tools to solve complex business problems". [11]

Georgia Perakis is a Greek-American operations researcher and the William F. Pounds Professor of Operations Research and Operations Management at the Sloan School of Management, Associate Dean of Social and Ethical Responsibilities of Computing at the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing, and Codirector of the MIT Operations Research Center Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, Massachusetts. Katya Scheinberg is a Russian-American applied mathematician known for her research in continuous optimization and particularly in derivative-free optimization. She works at Cornell University and is a professor in Cornell's School of Operations Research and Information Engineering.

Laura Albert is a professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the College of Engineering. Albert is an expert in Operations Research, specializing solving and modeling discrete optimization problems arising from applications in homeland security, disaster management, emergency response, public services, and healthcare.

Julie Simmons Ivy is the department chair of and professor in the department of industrial and operations engineering at the University of Michigan. Her research involves health care statistics and the application of systems engineering to health care and to other social services including food bank distribution systems.

Cynthia Diane Rudin is an American computer scientist and statistician specializing in machine learning and known for her work in interpretable machine learning. Anne Gillian Robinson is a Canadian operations researcher and business executive, the chief strategy officer for Canadian supply chain management company Kinaxis, and the former president of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), an academic society for operations researchers.
