Brian Gimmillaro (born in 1948) is the former women's volleyball coach for California State University, Long Beach, from 1985 to 2017. Before joining Long Beach State, Gimmillaro began his coaching tenure with the girls volleyball team at Gahr High School from 1978 to 1985. With Gahr, Gimmillaro's team won two CIF Southern Section divisions and one California Interscholastic Federation championship. Upon leaving for Long Beach State, he had 142 wins and 15 losses in high school volleyball.
At Long Beach State, Gimmillaro and Long Beach State won the regular season of the Big West Conference thirteen times and the NCAA Division I women's volleyball tournament three times. He received over ten Coach of the Year awards, including from the American Volleyball Coaches Association and USA Volleyball. As Long Beach State's coach, Gimmillaro accumulated 835 wins and 221 losses. With his 835 wins, Gimmillaro is in the top 25 for most overall women's volleyball wins by a NCAA Division I coach. He was given the Donald S. Shondell All-Time Great Coach award from USA Volleyball in 2003 and named into the AVCA Hall of Fame in 2008.
Gimmillaro was born in New York during the late 1940s. [1] He lived with his two siblings and mother in New York before he moved to Los Angeles at the age of seventeen. For his post-secondary education, Gimmillaro attended an economics program at the California State University, Long Beach. [2]
During the mid-1960s, Gimmillaro worked at Lucky Stores. Following his education, Gimmillaro sold products for General Mills during the early 1970s before he was a substitute until the mid-1970s. [2] During his teaching career between 1972 and 1977, Gimmillaro worked at La Mirada High School and Gahr High School. Some of the subjects Gimmillaro was a teacher in were politics and math. [3]
While at Gahr, Gimmillaro began his coaching experience in 1978. [4] As part of the CIF Southern Section, Gimmillaro's girls volleyball team won the 3-A division in 1979 and the 5-A division in 1984. [5] At California Interscholastic Federation events, his team won the California Division I championship in 1983. [6] Upon leaving Ghar, Gimmillaro had 142 wins and 15 losses in high school volleyball by 1985. [3]
In August 1985, Gimmillaro joined the women's volleyball team at Long Beach State as their associate head coach. [7] He worked for Long Beach State in an interim position before becoming their head coach in December 1985. [8] As part of the Big West Conference, Gimmillaro and Long Beach State were first in the regular season thirteen times between 1991 and 2014. [9] [10]
After winning their first NCAA Division I women's volleyball tournament in 1989, Gimmillaro's team re-won the championship in 1993 and 1998. [11] At the NCAA Division I event, Gimmillaro and Long Beach were the runner-ups in 1991. [12] They were also second during the 2001 edition. [13] [14] While at Long Beach State, Gimmillaro won his 700th game in 2010 and his 800th in 2015. [15] [16] Gimmillaro ended his coaching tenure with Long Beach State in 2017. [17] With his 835 wins and 221 losses, Gimmillaro was in the top 25 for most overall women's volleyball wins by a NCAA Division I coach during 2022. [18]
Apart from his head coaching tenure, Gimmillaro joined the California Juniors Volleyball Club as their owner in 1982. [3] Gimmillaro was employed with the United States women's national volleyball team in business management before they competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics. [3] [19] While at Long Beach State, Gimmillaro decided to not work at the 1996 Summer Olympics and the University of Texas in 1997. [2] With California Juniors, Gimmillaro was an assistant coach and director during the late 2000s. [20]
While with Long Beach State, Gimmillaro was a nine time women's volleyball Coach of the Year for the Big West Conference between 1991 and 2014. [21] In 1998, Gimmillaro was named Coach of the Year for Division I schools by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. [22] Gimmillaro was named National Coach of the Year for USA Volleyball in 1999. [23] In 2003, USA Volleyball gave Gimmillaro the Donald S. Shondell All-Time Great Coach award. [24]
Gimmillaro joined the AVCA Hall of Fame in 2008. [25] In 2016, he was given a Distinguished Alumni award from Long Beach State. [26] He was inducted into the Southern California Indoor Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2018. [27] In 2022, the Brian Gimmillaro Locker Room was created by Long Beach State. [28] Outside of his career, Gimmillaro has two children. [29]
Misty Elizabeth May-Treanor is a retired American professional beach volleyball player. She is a three-time Olympic gold medalist, and as of August 2012, was the most successful female beach volleyball player having won 112 tournaments in domestic and international competition.
Charles Frederick "Karch" Kiraly is an American volleyball player, coach, and broadcast announcer. He was a central part of the U.S National Team that won gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games. He went on to win the gold medal again at the 1996 Olympic Games, the first Olympic competition to feature beach volleyball. He is the only player to have won Olympic medals of any color in both the indoor and beach volleyball categories. He played college volleyball for the UCLA Bruins, where his teams won three national championships under head coach Al Scates.
The Hawaii Rainbow Wahine volleyball team is the NCAA Division I women's volleyball team for the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. They are a member of the Big West Conference and are led by head coach, Robyn Ah M, Mow-Santos. The Rainbow Wahine volleyball program remains a large source of financial income for the University of Hawaii athletic department, notwithstanding even what football and men's basketball generates.
Dain Blanton is an American former beach volleyball player who won the gold medal in beach volleyball in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney with partner Eric Fonoimoana. He returned to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens with partner Jeff Nygaard, becoming the first two-time U.S. male beach volleyball Olympian. He is the current head coach for the University of Southern California's women's beach volleyball team, having won 6 national titles with the program.
Marina High School is a public high school located in the northwest corner of Huntington Beach, California which first began operating in 1963. Marina is part of the Huntington Beach Union High School District, which includes several other area high schools. The school is located on Springdale Street between Edinger Avenue and McFadden Avenue. In 2009, the school was named a California Distinguished School, the highest honor given to schools in California.
The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is an organization of over 9,000 members, incorporated as a private non-profit educational corporation in 1981, as the Collegiate Volleyball Coaches Association. It is currently headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky.
Russell David Rose is an American author, professor and was the women's volleyball coach at Penn State University (1979–2021). His lifetime head coaching record is 1330–229, which ranks first in NCAA Division I history. He has the most wins and highest winning percentage of any Penn State intercollegiate athletic coach in Penn State history.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers women's volleyball team competes as part of NCAA Division I, representing the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in the Big Ten. Nebraska plays its home games at the Bob Devaney Sports Center and has sold out every home match since 2001. The team has been coached by John Cook since 2000.
John Andrew Banachowski is an American volleyball coach. He was the head coach of the women's volleyball team at UCLA. He had more wins than any other Division I coach, with 1,106 total victories and an overall record since the 1970 season of 1,106-301 (.786), until his record was broken on September 6, 2013, by University of Hawaii head coach Dave Shoji. He did not coach the two seasons from 1968-1970 after his graduation from UCLA. Under his coaching, the UCLA team won six national championships. Banachowski was twice an All-American volleyball player at UCLA under Al Scates, and won USVBA national championships in 1965 and 1967 as a player. While at UCLA he joined Delta Tau Delta International Fraternity.
The Penn State Nittany Lions women's volleyball program has had a long tradition, founded in 1976 by Tom Tait, long-time coach of the Penn State men's team, who coached the women's team from 1976 to 1979 and was named a USA Volleyball All-Time great coach in 2007.
Long Beach State athletics, or simply Beach athletics, are the athletic teams that represent California State University, Long Beach. Teams compete in 19 sports at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level. Long Beach State is a founding member of the Big West Conference, and also competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and the Golden Coast Conference for sports not sponsored by the Big West.

The university fields twenty-two teams and compete in NCAA Division I; they are primarily members of the Big West Conference, but the football team plays in the Big Sky Conference, the wrestling team is an associate member of the Pac-12 Conference, and the swimming and diving program competes as an affiliate member in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
Big West Conference women's volleyball is an American collegiate volleyball conference. It includes 10–12 women's teams from various colleges and universities. Before the 2017–18 school year, the Big West sponsored volleyball only for women, but the conference added a men's volleyball league in that school year. In 2012, Beach Volleyball began as a recognized collegiate sport. By 2016 this conference officially began play as one of the firsts in the nation.
John Dunning is an American volleyball coach who was the head women's coach at Stanford University (2001–2016) and the University of the Pacific (1985–2000). In 32 seasons of collegiate coaching, he guided his teams to five NCAA championships – second most of any Division I women's volleyball coach – and compiled an overall record of 888-185 (.828). He is one of only two Division I college volleyball coaches to have won NCAA championships at two different schools.
Kathy Gregory is an American retired volleyball coach. Upon her retirement as the University of California, Santa Barbara's only women's volleyball head coach, after 38 seasons she amassed 882 wins, the fifth most in NCAA Division I history. As a player, Gregory represented the United States at the 1970 World Games and the 1971 Pan American Games and she was also the captain of the professional San Diego Breakers. In 1989, Gregory was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame.
The 2023 UC Irvine Anteaters men's volleyball team represents the University of California, Irvine in the 2023 NCAA Division I & II men's volleyball season. The Anteaters, led by eleventh year head coach David Kniffin, play their home games at the Bren Events Center. The Anteaters compete as members of the Big West Conference and were picked to finish third in the Big West preseason poll.
Chuck Erbe has been the volleyball coach for Forest Hills Eastern since 2019. For the United States, he coached the teams that went to the 1974 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship and the 1981 World University Games. As a United States Volleyball Association coach, his Californian teams won the Women's Open event at the Indoor Open National Championship in 1975 and 1980. With the USC Trojans women's volleyball team primarily from 1976 to 1989, his players won three AIAW Volleyball Championships. In the NCAA, they were the 1981 NCAA Division I women's volleyball tournament winners and were runner ups in the 1982 NCAA Division I women's volleyball tournament. Erbe had 310 wins, 121 losses and 3 ties with USC before ending his coaching position.
The 2024 NCAA Men's National Collegiate Volleyball Tournament was the 53rd edition of the NCAA Men's National Collegiate Volleyball Championship, an annual tournament to determine the national champion of NCAA Division I and Division II men's collegiate indoor volleyball. The single-elimination tournament, which was expanded to eight teams with the addition of an automatic bid for the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) champion, began with four quarterfinal matches. The entire tournament was hosted by California State University, Long Beach from April 30 to May 4, 2024, at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach.
