Rudolph "Rudy" Suwara (born November 19, 1941) is an American former volleyball player who competed with the United States men's national volleyball team in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. [1] Suwara won a gold medal with the national team at the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg. [2] He captained the United States team in the early 1970s. [3] Suwara was nicknamed "Tasmanian Devil". [1]

Coaching

Suwara coached the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) women's team from 1971 to 1974. [2] In 1974, UCSB won the USVBA Collegiate and Open Division National Championships. [2]

Suwara then coached the San Diego State University (SDSU) women's team from 1976 to 1991, compiling a record of 431–204–3. [2]

In 2012, Suwara was inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame. [2]

Personal life

Suwara grew up in Spanish Harlem. His brother, Ernie Suwara, played for the United States men's volleyball team at the 1964 Summer Olympics. [4]

Steve Dennis Timmons is an American former volleyball player who represented the United States at three consecutive Summer Olympics, winning a gold medal in 1984 and 1988, and a bronze medal in 1992. He was named the MVP of the 1984 Olympics by the International Volleyball Federation. He was a pioneer of back row hitting.

Kathy Gregory is an American retired volleyball coach. Upon her retirement as the University of California, Santa Barbara's only women's volleyball head coach, after 38 seasons she amassed 882 wins, the fifth most in NCAA Division I history. As a player, Gregory represented the United States at the 1970 World Games and the 1971 Pan American Games and she was also the captain of the professional San Diego Breakers. In 1989, Gregory was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame.
