Brit Volden (born 4 April 1960) is a Norwegian orienteering competitor. Her achievements include two individual silver medals, and one gold and one silver medal in the relay at the World Orienteering Championships. She also won the unofficial World Cup in 1983 and placed second overall in 1984 and 1988.

Winning two Nordic titles and five individual national titles, she was awarded the King's Cup trophy two times.

Orienteering career

Volden won a gold medal in the relay at the 1987 World Orienteering Championships, [1] [2] along with Ragnhild Bratberg, Ragnhild Bente Andersen and Ellen Sofie Olsvik. [3] She also won a silver medal for Norway in the relay in 1979, [1] behind the Finnish relay team. [4] She won individual silver medals at the 1981 World Orienteering Championships, [1] behind Annichen Kringstad, [5] and in 1985. [1] [6]

She won the overall World Cup in 1983 (unofficial cup), and finished second in 1984 and 1988. [1]

She won five individual national titles and four national relay titles, and became Nordic champion in 1984 and 1986. [1] She was awarded the Kongepokal (King's Cup) trophy at the national championships twice, in 1983 and 1985. [7] The King's Cup is awarded to the one female and one male athlete who obtains the assumed best result (among the various disciplines) during a senior national championship. [8]

She represented the sports clubs Bækkelagets SK and Kongsberg IF. [1]

Personal life

Born on 4 April 1960, [1] Volden is married to orienteer Øyvin Thon. In 2005 they both climbed Cho Oyu (8201 meters). [9] In 2011 she climbed Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), along with her husband Øyvin and Stian Voldmo, and these were the first three Norwegians to climb this mountain. [10]

After her sports career, Volden has worked as a pharmacist in Kongsberg. She has three children with her husband Øyvind Thon. [10]

Hanne Sandstad is a Norwegian orienteering competitor and World Champion.

Sigurd Dæhli is a Norwegian orienteering competitor. He became Relay World Champion in 1981, by participating on the Norwegian winning team in Thun, Switzerland. He obtained bronze in the 1983 Individual World Orienteering Championships in Zalaegerszeg, Hungary.

Ragnhild Bente Andersen is a Norwegian orienteering competitor and World champion. She won a gold medal in relay at the 1987 World Orienteering Championships, together with Bratberg, Olsvik and Volden. She received a silver medal in relay in 1991, together with Sandstad, Arnesen and Bratberg.

Siv Bråten Lunde is a former Norwegian biathlete who received five medals in the world championships during her career. She is now a teacher at Trysil Ungdomsskole. She has also helped Nikolai Hansen Bakken.

Ellen Sofie Olsvik is a Norwegian orienteering competitor, world champion in the relay event, and winner of the first overall Orienteering World Cup. She is also world champion in ski-orienteering.

Øystein Kvaal Østerbø is a Norwegian orienteering and ski-orienteering competitor. He finished overall third in the Orienteering World Cup in 2004, and won a silver medal in the relay in the 2004 World Ski Orienteering Championships. He has competed in all fifteen World Orienteering Championships since his debut in 2004 until 2018, obtaining his first two medals in Inverness in 2015; in the relay and mixed sprint relay, respectively. His best individual achievements are fourth places in the sprint in 2005 and 2010.

Michael Wehlin is a Swedish orienteering competitor. He received silver medals in the relay at the 1985 and 1989 World Orienteering Championships with the Swedish team.

Harald Thon is a Norwegian orienteering competitor who represented the club IF Sturla and the Norwegian national team. He was part of the Norwegian winning team in relay at the World Orienteering Championships in 1981 and 1983.

Atle Hansen is a Norwegian orienteering competitor and world champion. He won a gold medal in the relay event at the 1985 World Orienteering Championships in Bendigo, together with Morten Berglia, Tore Sagvolden and Øyvin Thon. He finished overall second in the first unofficial World Cup in 1983. He was national junior champion in the individual event in 1980 and again in 1981, and received a silver medal in the individual event at the Nordic Orienteering Championships for juniors in Borlänge in 1980.

Wenche Jacobsen is a Norwegian orienteering competitor who competed internationally. Her achievements included winning a bronze medal at the world championships in 1978, and she was part of the Norwegian relay team at the world championships in 1976 and 1978, both times placing fourth.

Astrid Carlson was a Norwegian orienteering competitor who competed in the 1970s. She participated at the 1978 World Orienteering Championships in Kongsberg, where she placed 8th in the individual course. She won a silver medal in the relay at the 1979 World Orienteering Championships in Tampere, together with Anne Berit Eid and Brit Volden.

Helle Johansen is a Norwegian orienteering competitor. She received a silver medal in the relay event at the 1985 World Orienteering Championships in Bendigo, together with Ragnhild Bratberg, Hilde Tellesbø and Ellen-Sofie Olsvik.

Per Kristiansen is a former Norwegian orienteering competitor who competed in the 1950s and 1960s, and later served as an official for the sport at a national level. He became National Champion both individually and in relay, and was twice the individual medal winner at the Scandinavian Championships. He participated at the two first European Orienteering Championships, with a silver medal in relay as his best result.
