Broken Ankles is an extended play by American rapper Freeway and American music producer and mashup musician Girl Talk, both of whom hail from Pennsylvania. It was released digitally on April 8, 2014.
Broken Ankles focuses more on traditional beats rather than the straight mash-ups of Girl Talk's previous work. [1] Speaking about the release, he explained: "I had the idea to do a mixtape with someone, but have it flow like one of my albums. I wanted to do a mixtape that was pretty different from your average mixtape. Every song is connected and there's a very distinct beginning and end; it works as a whole." [1]
Freeway was Girl Talk's first choice for a collaborator, as he had been a fan of the rapper ever since hearing his appearance on the Jay-Z song "1-900-Hustler" and felt that "his energy is unreal, and he's able to keep up with any production." [2] The two communicated through phone calls and e-mails and recorded several songs in Philadelphia. [1]
Girl Talk first announced the release of Broken Ankles through Twitter on October 6, 2013. [3] Two days later, Girl Talk and Freeway debuted a song from the EP entitled "Tolerated" during a performance at the Brooklyn Bowl. [2] The EP was originally set for a fall 2013 release through DatPiff, but the release was postponed to 2014 due to Girl Talk's desire to "[wait] on a few features from other artists before [settling] on a definitive date." [1]
On March 25, 2014, Girl Talk announced that the video for "Tolerated", featuring Freeway and Waka Flocka Flame, would be released on March 31, and that Broken Ankles would be released on April 8. [4] The music video, directed by Allen Cordell, features Girl Talk and Freeway walking down a street and brutally assaulting passers-by who bother them.

Broken Ankles was well received by critics and was commended as "Freeway’s best solo project" in a review by Pitchfork. [8] Reviewers praised Girl Talk's production, saying his "soulful sampling is perfected here" and "evokes some of the bombast and pageantry that made early 2000s Just Blaze so amazing." [10] [11] The samples in the EP "leaves you craving more" with its "hard-hitting" beats that "are a perfect compliment to Freeway's gritty, Philly cadence". [9] The result is "a bracingly intense yet surprisingly harmonious EP that stuffs Girl Talk’s hyperactive beats under Freeway’s militantly growled rhymes". [12]
Radric Delantic Davis, known professionally as Gucci Mane, is an American rapper and record executive. He is credited, along with fellow Atlanta-based rappers T.I. and Jeezy, with pioneering the hip hop subgenre trap music for mainstream audiences into the 2000s. His debut studio album, Trap House (2005) was released by the independent label Big Cat Records and entered the Billboard 200; it was followed by Hard to Kill (2006), which spawned his first Billboard Hot 100 entry with its 2007 single, "Freaky Gurl". That same year, he released his third album, Trap-A-Thon before signing with Atlantic Records to release his fourth album, Back to the Trap House (2007).
Gregg Michael Gillis, known by the stage name Girl Talk, is an American disc jockey who specializes in mash-ups and digital sampling. Gillis has released five LPs on the record label Illegal Art and EPs on both 333 and 12 Apostles. He was trained as an engineer.
Philip Anthony Bernard, better known by his stage name Grafh, is an American rapper from New York City. His 2007 debut studio album, Autografh, was released through EMI Records and Virgin Records. Afterward, he parted ways with both labels.

He first became known for his 2009 single "O Let's Do It," which entered the Billboard Hot 100 and led him to sign with Gucci Mane's 1017 Records, an imprint of Warner Records that same year. His 2010 follow-up single, "No Hands" reached number 13 on the chart and received diamond certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Both songs, along with "Hard in da Paint" and "Grove St. Party", preceded the release of his debut studio album Flockaveli (2010), which peaked at number six on the Billboard 200. His second studio album, Triple F Life: Friends, Fans & Family (2012) peaked at number ten on the chart and was supported by the singles "Round of Applause", "I Don't Really Care" and "Get Low".
"No Hands" is a song recorded by American rapper Waka Flocka Flame featuring fellow American rappers Roscoe Dash and Wale from the former's debut studio album, Flockaveli (2010). It was written by the artists alongside producer Drumma Boy. It was leaked in May 2010 before it was officially released in August. The single entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number 45 and peaked at number 13.

Ferrari Boyz is a collaborative studio album by American rappers Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame. Originally scheduled for a June 21, 2011, release, it was delayed and later released on August 9. It features Rocko, 2 Chainz, 1017 Brick Squad labelmates Wooh da Kid, and Frenchie, and also Brick Squad Monopoly members Slim Dunkin, Ice Burgundy, and YG Hootie. The album was mostly produced by label producer Southside, with additional production by 808 Mafia, Drumma Boy, Fatboi, Shawty Redd, and Schife. According to Waka Flocka, the album was completed in two weeks.

That same year, Roscoe Dash's debut single, "All the Way Turnt Up" peaked within the top 50 on the chart and preceded his debut studio album, Ready Set Go! (2010). Due to erroneous circumstances regarding its release, it failed to chart and was admitted by Roscoe Dash himself to be unfinished. The following year, he guest featured alongside Kanye West on Big Sean's 2011 single "Marvin & Chardonnay," which peaked at 32 on the Billboard Hot 100, while his debut extended play, J.U.I.C.E. (2011) entered the Billboard 200.

Joshua Howard Luellen, known professionally as Southside, is an American record producer, rapper and songwriter. Based in Atlanta, he is recognized in the music industry for his aggressive, trap-infused production work for prominent hip hop artists. His production work for hometown rapper Waka Flocka Flame led Luellen to sign with his label Brick Squad Monopoly, an imprint of Gucci Mane's 1017 Records as in-house talent in 2010. Luellen and labelmate, fellow producer Lex Luger established the production team 808 Mafia that same year, which has been credited on commercially successful releases throughout the remaining decade.

Mariel Semonte Orr, known professionally as Trouble, was an American rapper from Atlanta, Georgia. He released eight independent mixtapes until receiving recognition for his guest appearance alongside Migos on YFN Lucci's 2016 single "Key to the Streets," which received platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The following year, he signed with Mike Will Made It's EarDrummer Records, an imprint of Interscope Records to release his debut studio album Edgewood (2018), which entered the Billboard 200 and was supported by the single "Bring It Back". In 2020, he entered a joint venture with Def Jam Recordings to release his second album, Thug Luv in April of that year, which failed to chart. He was shot and killed on June 5, 2022 during a home invasion.
