Bruno Giuranna (born 6 April 1933 in Milan) is an Italian violist. [1]
Born in Milan, to composer Barbara Giuranna, Bruno Giuranna completed his musical studies at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. He founded the italian chamber orchestra "I Musici" with a group of young musician friends in 1951. [2] [3]
Bruno Giuranna was founding violist of the original Quartetto di Roma, [4] and the Italian String Trio with whom he recorded the complete string trios of Ludwig Van Beethoven for Deutsche Grammophon in the 1960s. [5] [6] In 1989 he recorded the Beethoven String Trios again for Deutsche Grammophon at the invitation of Anne-Sophie Mutter and Mstislav Rostropovich. [7] [8]
This recording was nominated for a Grammy award in 1990. [9]
Bruno Giuranna performed the premiere of Musica da Concerto for viola and string orchestra, by Giorgio Federico Ghedini, under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. [10] He has played as a soloist with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and La Scala in Milan under conductors including Claudio Abbado, Carlo Maria Giulini, Sir John Barbirolli, Riccardo Muti and Sergiu Celibidache. Giuranna held the post of Professor of viola at the Hochschule der Kunste in Berlin from 1983 until 1998 [13] and has held Viola Professor positions at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, the Royal College and Royal Academy in London, and the Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana in Lugano. [14] Frequently invited to the Marlboro Festival in the USA, he currently teaches at the Fondazione Stauffer in Cremona and at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena. [15] From 1983 to 1992 he was the artistic director of the Orchestra da Camera di Padova e il Veneto. [16]
In 1987, he was decorated by the Italian president with the title of Cavaliere di Gran Croce al Merito. [17] [18] [19]
Giuranna was also responsible for a transcription of Bach's Goldberg Variations. The world premiere recording of this work was made by the Trio Broz in 2008. [20] Bruno Giuranna was also a member of the Trio Italiano d'Archi [21] and of the Italian chamber orchestra I Musici di Roma.
In 2020, Giuranna serves as president of the central board for ESTA (European String Teachers Association). [22]

The Hagen Quartet is an Austrian string quartet founded in 1981 by four siblings, Lukas, Angelika, Veronika and Clemens, in Salzburg. The quartet members are teachers and mentors at the Salzburg Mozarteum and the Hochschule für Musik Basel. The ensemble made its Salzburg Festival debut in 1984. The complete recordings of the Mozart string quartets were released in 2006. In the 2012–2013 season, the Hagen Quartet performed the complete Beethoven cycle in New York, Tokyo, Paris, London, Salzburg and Vienna. They performed, between December 2013 and August 2017, on the four famous Stradivarius instruments played previously by the Paganini Quartet, the Cleveland String Quartet, and the Tokyo String Quartet, respectively. Those instruments are now being played by the Quartetto di Cremona.

The Quartetto Italiano was a string quartet founded in Reggio Emilia in 1945. They made their debut in 1945 in Carpi when all four players were still in their early 20s. They were originally named Nuovo Quartetto Italiano before dropping the "Nuovo" tag in 1951. They are particularly noted for their recording of the complete cycle of Beethoven string quartets, made between 1967 and 1975. The quartet disbanded in 1980.

Mariana Sîrbu, also credited as Sârbu, was a Romanian classical violinist and academic teacher, who made an international career performing and recording. She was focused on chamber music, founding the Academica String Quartet in 1968, joining the Trio di Milano in 1985, and founding the Quartetto Stradivari in 1994. She was concertmaster of I Musici from 1993 to 2003. She became professor of violin at the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig in Leipzig in 2002, gave international master classes and was juror for competitions of violin and chamber music.

In a career that spanned more than fifty years, he was a prolific recording artist, and an academic teacher.
Mario Brunello is an Italian cellist and musician, who is currently Artistic Director of the International String Quartet Competition Premio Paolo Borciani and of the Reggio Emilia String Quartet Festival. Brunello plays a 17th century Maggini cello which, in the 20th century, belonged to Benedetto Mazzacurati and then to Franco Rossi, cellist of the "Quartetto Italiano".
