Bukkene Bruse (established in 1988 in Norway) is a Norwegian traditional folk music band, presenting a varied repertoire of traditional and folk-style Norwegian songs, but also including many new compositions based on various Norwegian musical traditions. [1] [2]
The members of the group include Annbjørg Lien, a prominent Hardanger fiddle and nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle) player; Arve Moen Bergset, fiddle player and vocalist; flutist Steinar Ofsdal; and pipe organist Bjørn Ole Rasch. The name of the group is taken from the fairy tale of the Three Billy Goats Gruff (Norwegian : De tre bukkene Bruse). [1]
The group was formed in 1988 in Norway and has travelled and performed widely in Scandinavia, and elsewhere. In 1994, they were selected as official Olympic Musicians for the Lillehammer Winter Olympic Games and performed at the closing ceremony. [2]
A Hardanger fiddle is a traditional stringed instrument considered to be the national instrument of Norway. In modern designs, this type of fiddle is very similar to the violin, though with eight or nine strings and thinner wood. The earliest known example of the hardingfele is from 1651, made by Ole Jonsen Jaastad in Hardanger, Norway. Originally, the instrument had a rounder, narrower body. Around the year 1850, the modern layout with a body much like the violin became the norm.

In a departure from her previous records—such as Prisme (1996) and Felefeber (1994)—, which feature more acoustic, traditional sets, Baba Yaga is comprised primarily of Lien's own compositions, arranged in a more "modern", futuristic style, and utilizing synthesizers, programming. and various digital effects effectively.
