Bumbuna is a town in the central of Tonkolili District in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone. The town lies about 30 miles from the district capital of Magburaka and approximately 124 miles (by road) northeast of Freetown.

The areas in and around Bumbuna is extremely rich in iron ore and is home to Bumbuna Dam, the largest hydroelectric power station in the country. The population of Bumbuna was 4,051 in the 2004 census, and is made up of many different ethnic groups. Such as the Limba, Temne, Mandingo, Loko etc. However the Limba constitutes the largest population in Bumbuna.

Industry and minerals

Several industrial mining companies are based in the Bumbuna area, the largest of which is the Chinese Owned Shandong Steel SL limited,(SD Steel): this company took over the asset of the defunct African Minerals Ltd (AML) . The 50 MegaWatts Sierra Leone Bumbuna hydroelectric power plant, near Bumbuna, is complete and is supplying reliable, effective and environmentally sustainable electricity across Sierra Leone especially to the capital Freetown and Makeni . However, the national grid is so dilapidated that only about 27 MegaWatts are actually used. In 2010 about 5 million people were still not on the grid. [1]

The Rokel River is the largest river in the Republic of Sierra Leone in West Africa. The river basin measures 10,622 square kilometres (4,101 sq mi) in size, with the drainage divided by the Gbengbe and Kabala hills and the Sula Mountains. The estuary which extends over an area of 2,950 square kilometres (1,140 sq mi) became a Ramsar wetland site of importance in 1999.

Yonibana town in Northern Province, Sierra Leone

Yonibana is a small rural town in Tonkolili District in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone. It is the centre of the Yoni Chiefdom The vast majority of its population are from the Temne ethnic group and the Temne language is widely spoken in the town. Yonibana lies approximately 28.2 miles to the district capital Magburaka and approximately 90 miles north-east of Freetown.

Water supply in Sierra Leone

Water supply in Sierra Leone is characterized by limited access to safe drinking water. Despite efforts by the government and numerous non-governmental organizations, access has not much improved since the end of the Sierra Leone Civil War in 2002, stagnating at about 50% and even declining in rural areas. In the capital Freetown, taps often run dry. It is hoped that a new dam in Orugu, for which China committed financing in 2009, will alleviate water scarcity.

Religion in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is officially a secular state, although Islam and Christianity are the two main and dominant religions in the country. The constitution of Sierra Leone provides for freedom of religion and the Sierra Leone Government generally protects it. The Sierra Leone Government is constitutionally forbidden from establishing a state religion, though Muslim and Christian prayers are usually held in the country at the beginning of major political occasions, including presidential inauguration.

Ethnic groups in Sierra Leone

Kalansongoia Chiefdom is a formerly amalgamated chiefdom in Tonkolili District of Sierra Leone. Its capital was Bumbuna. Now, the Chiefdom has been de-amalgamated into the original Kalanthuba and Dansogoia chiefdoms. Bumbuna remains the capital of the Dansogoia chiefdom. Kalanthuba has both a traditional capital and a capital of governance. The traditional capital is Kasokira and the administrative capital is Kamankay. Kamankay lies directly across the river from Bumbuna.

Bumbuna II Hydroelectric Power Station Hydroelectric power station in Sierra Leone

Bumbuna II Hydroelectric Power Station is a planned 143 megawatts (192,000 hp) hydroelectric power station in Sierra Leone. The power plant is under development by a consortium of renewable energy IPPs and investors, led by Joule Africa Limited. The energy generated here will be sold to Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), the electricity utility company of Sierra Leone, under a 25-year power purchase agreement.
