The Burger Boat Company, of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, United States, is a builder of custom-designed, hand-built pleasure cruisers. The company also produces commercial vessels and has produced military vessels in the past. It is the second oldest pleasure cruiser producer in the United States after Hodgdon, and the fifth oldest in the world. [1]
Henry B. Burger Sr. founded the H. Burger Shipyard in 1863 after moving to Manitowoc, WI, from Milwaukee, where was employed with the Wolf & Davidson Shipyard as a builder. In Manitowoc, he found a pool of European immigrant craftsmen to employ. [2] The demand for small fishing boats for local fishermen prompted the production 20' to 30' Mackinaw style vessels. [3]
The company grew and in an effort to leverage the building of larger steamships in 1872/3 Henry Burger Sr. took on a partner, Mr. Greeneleaf Rand, an established shipbuilder in Manitowoc, having been superintendent of the Manitowoc Dry Dock Company and partner at Hanson & Rand Shipyard, [4] forming Rand & Burger Shipyard until Mr. Rand's death in 1885. [5] This company, and its next incarnation Burger & Burger Shipyard, produced many Steamship Ferries for the Goodrich Transportation Company.
A year later, in 1886, Henry Sr. took on his nephew George B. Burger II to form Burger & Burger Shipyard. Around this time the production of new wooden sailing ships was waning, and the Burgers foresaw the shift to maintenance, rehabilitation, and service within the industry, purchasing, in Manitowoc, the only dry dock between there and Detroit, none existed at the time on Lake Superior. [6] Burger launched the last full-rigged schooner built on the Great Lakes in 1889, S/V CORA A. In 1890, Burger built and launched the 201' ferry S/S INDIANA for the Goodrich Transportation Company, the largest and by far most successful passenger steamship line on the Great Lakes. [7] [1]
In 1902 Henry B. Burger Sr. and George Burger II of the "Burger & Burger Shipyard" sellout to the Manitowoc Drydock Company owned by Chicago Industrialists Elias Gunnell and Charles C. West, that would later become the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company, now The Manitowoc Company. [5]
Around this time Henry Sr.'s other nephew, and George II's younger brother, Henry B. Burger II founds, on the opposite side of the Manitowoc River, the Henry B. Burger Shipyard - the current location of Burger Boat Company. Focusing on pleasure cruisers rather than steamers like his kinsmen across the river, innovations that came out of his shipyard were visionary, installing gasoline engines produced by Kahlenberg Brothers of Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Their first motor vessel was launched in 1901, the VERNON JR. an 85' cruiser; and within the decade the company was building 80', 90', and 100' wooden cruisers and had established a reputation for building the world's finest custom motor yachts. This yard continued on until Henry's death in 1914. In 1915 his wife, Mammie Oertling Burger, and four children: Henry C., George M., Walter W., and Caroline G. Burger, incorporated The Burger Boat Company. [6] [8]
Burger built the USA's first steel-hulled yacht, the 24m S/V Tamaris in 1938, with newly developed electric arc welding technology and began using welded aluminum in 1952 with the 11m Virginia.
Of the 500 yachts built in the company's history, there are about 250 still in service. [9] [10]
David Ross and partner Jim Ruffolo, Chicago entrepreneurs, acquired the bankrupt company in 1993. Ross retired in 2007. Burger is now headed by Jim Ruffolo, President/CEO. About 350 employees build an average of three yachts a year. [11]

There is no standard definition, though the term generally applies to vessels with a cabin intended for overnight use. To be termed a yacht, as opposed to a boat, such a pleasure vessel is likely to be at least 33 feet (10 m) in length and may have been judged to have good aesthetic qualities.
Blohm+Voss (B+V), also written historically as Blohm & Voss, Blohm und Voß etc., is a German shipbuilding and engineering company. Founded in Hamburg in 1877 to specialise in steel-hulled ships, its most famous product was the World War II battleship Bismarck. In the 1930s, its owners established the Hamburger Flugzeugbau aircraft manufacturer which, shortly before the outbreak of World War II, adopted the name of its parent company. Following a difficult period after the war, B+V was revived, changing ownership among several owners, as Thyssen Group and Star Capital. In 2016, it became a subsidiary of Lürssen and continues to supply both the military and civilian markets. It serves two areas – new construction of warships as NVL B.V. & Co. KG, and new construction and refitting of megayachts. The company has been in operation, building ships and other large machinery, almost continuously for 147 years.

The Delaware River Iron Ship Building and Engine Works was a major late-19th-century American shipyard located on the Delaware River in Chester, Pennsylvania. It was founded by the industrialist John Roach and is often referred to by its parent company name of John Roach & Sons, or just known as the Roach shipyard. For the first fifteen years of its existence, the shipyard was by far the largest and most productive in the United States, building more tonnage of ships than its next two major competitors combined, in addition to being the U.S. Navy's largest contractor. The American Ship Building Company was the dominant shipbuilder on the Great Lakes before the Second World War. It started as Cleveland Shipbuilding in Cleveland, Ohio in 1888 and opened the yard in Lorain, Ohio in 1898. It changed its name to the American Ship Building Company in 1900, when it acquired Superior Shipbuilding, in Superior, Wisconsin; Toledo Shipbuilding, in Toledo, Ohio; and West Bay Shipbuilding, in West Bay City, Michigan. With the coming of World War I, the company also acquired Buffalo Dry Dock, in Buffalo, New York; Chicago Shipbuilding, in Chicago, Illinois; and Detroit Shipbuilding, in Wyandotte, Michigan. American Shipbuilding ranked 81st among United States corporations in the value of World War II military production contracts.
Motor Yacht A is a superyacht designed by Philippe Starck and engineered by naval architect Martin Francis. She was built by the Blohm + Voss shipyard at the HDW deepwater facility in Kiel. She was ordered in November 2004, and delivered in 2008 at a rumoured cost of US$300 million. With a length of 119 metres (390 ft) and measuring almost 6,000 tonnes, she is one of the largest motor yachts in the world. Before 2022 she was connected with the Russian entrepreneur and industrialist Andrey Melnichenko, but, according to his representatives, he has no relation to her anymore, neither in terms of ownership, nor in any other way. The yacht has been laid up in the United Arab Emirates since 2022.
The SS St. Marys Challenger is a freight-carrying vessel operating on the North American Great Lakes built in 1906. Originally an ore boat, she spent most of her career as a cement carrier when much larger ore boats became common. After a 107-year-long working career as a self-propelled boat, she was converted into a barge and paired with the tug Prentiss Brown as an articulated tug-barge. Before conversion, she was the oldest operating self-propelled lake freighter on the Great Lakes, as well as being one of the last freight-carrying vessels on the Great Lakes to be powered by steam engines.
Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architect Ltd. (GCMNA) of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, is a designer of international luxury yachts. The company was established in 1994 by Gregory C. Marshall and with partner Gordon Galbraith, who joined the company in 1998, currently employs a design team of 30 employees.
Front Street Shipyard is a custom boat builder, boat yard, marina, and service yard in Belfast, Maine, USA. The yard is located along the waterfront in Penobscot Bay. The business was established in 2011. One year later, the ownership group also purchased the neighboring business, Belfast Boat Yard. In 2014, Front Street Shipyard began leasing a building in Bucksport, Maine, where production boats are built.
Bay Shipbuilding Company (BSC) is a shipyard and dry dock company in Sturgeon Bay, Door County, Wisconsin. As of 2015, Bay Ships was a subsidiary of Fincantieri Marine Group and produces articulated tug and barges, OPA-90 compliant double hull tank ships and offshore support vessels. It also provides repair services to the lake freighter fleet. In the past the shipyard located in Sturgeon Bay has operated under several different names and traces its history back to 1918.
Arctic was a wooden-hulled tugboat that worked on the Great Lakes of North America from 1881 to 1930. In 1930 the Arctic was stripped of her machinery, and abandoned at Manitowoc, Wisconsin. On June 22, 2018, the remains of the Arctic were listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

SS Edward L. Ryerson is a steel-hulled American Great Lakes freighter that entered service in 1960. Built between April 1959 and January 1960 for the Inland Steel Company, she was the third of the thirteen so-called 730-class of lake freighters, each of which shared the unofficial title of "Queen of the Lakes", as a result of their record-breaking length. She was not only the last steam-powered freighter built on the lakes but also the last one that was not a self-unloader. Since 2009, she has been in long-term layup in Superior, Wisconsin. She is one of only two American-owned straight deck lake freighters, the other being John Sherwin, built in 1958.
