The Butcher of Mons is a media name given to an unidentified serial killer who committed five murders between January 1996 and July 1997 in or near the Belgian city of Mons. [1] [2] [3] The name was chosen because of the highly precise dismemberment of the victims' bodies. [2] Then they were placed in plastic bags "clearly visible on the roadside or on a channel embankment".[ citation needed ]

Discoveries

On March 22, 1997, police officer Olivier Motte discovered nine garbage bags containing human remains below the Rue Emile Vandervelde in Cuesmes. They were then examined by magistrate Pierre Pilette, who determined that the arms and legs in the bags came from three different bodies, all of them women. Of all the bags, five of them appeared to originate from the municipality of Knokke-Heist. On the following day, a ninth bag was found on the same street.

On March 24, a tenth bag was discovered, containing the bust of a woman, on the chemin de l'Inquiétude in Mons.

On April 12, two bags were found in Havré, in the rue du Dépôt, near the Haine river, a tributary of the Scheldt. These bags contained one foot, one leg, and a head.

The victims

The human remains were found in the Mons region, as well as in northern France, between March 1997 and April 1998, in garbage bags. The systematic mutilation of the bodies made their identification difficult. The garbage bags were found in places with evocative names: Avenue des Bassins (a French term for the pelvis), in the river Haine (French for "hatred"), Chemin de l'Inquiétude (French for "concern"), Rue du Dépôt (French for a "deposit"), Chemin de Bethléem (Bethlehem) near the river Trouille (French for "fear"), etc. [4] [5] [6] In addition to the bodies, brightly colored underwear was also found in the bags. All the victims had in common that they frequented the area of Mons railway station, and all were plagued by socio-economic or family issues.

Carmelina Russo

Russo, 42, disappeared on January 4, 1996. Her pelvis was discovered on January 21 in the Scheldt, in the Nord department in France. [7]

Martine Bohn

Bohn, 43, a former prostitute from France, went missing on July 21, 1996. That same month her bust was fished out of the Haine near Mons.

Jacqueline Leclercq

Leclercq, 33, a mother of four children, went missing on December 22, 1996. [7] Her arms and legs were found by a policeman on March 22, 1997, in one of the trash bags below the rue de Emile Vandervelde in Cuesmes. [8] [9]

Nathalie Godart

Godart, 21, disappeared in March 1997. Her bust was found in the Haine.

Begonia Valencia

Valencia, 37, disappeared from her home in Frameries in the summer of 1997. Her skull was found in Hyon. [9]

The investigation

A special investigation cell, called the Corpus cell, was created to solve the murders, headed by magistrate Pierre Pilette. However, since the beginning of the investigation, the cell reported that it was lacking staff due to the case being considered "local". Since 2007, the cell consisted of only four investigators. [8]

Suspects

During the investigation, several people were suspected of being involved in these murders, but no concrete evidence was found against them. [10]

Smail Tulja

In February 2007, Smail Tulja was arrested in Montenegro at the behest of United States authorities after being suspected of committing the murders in Belgium as well as a similar murder in 1990 of his wife in New York. Tulja was also suspected of committing two murders in Albania. In February 2009 he was charged with the murder of his wife. [11] However, Montenegro refused to extradite him because of his citizenship and he was sentenced in July 2010 by a Montenegrin court to twelve years in prison for the murder of Mary Beal. [12] [13] [14] [15] In 2012, Montenegrin media reported that Tulja died in prison in February of that year. [16]

The identity of the killer - as long as the killings in question are the work of one individual - remains unknown to this day. [10] Between the beginning of the investigation in 1997 until 2010, nearly 1000 complaints were made.

In late February 2005, the dismembered body parts of 19-year-old Rashawn Brazell were found in garbage bags strewn throughout the New York City borough of Brooklyn after he disappeared from his home in the Bushwick neighborhood. He had left in the morning of February 14 to meet his accountant and then meet his mother for lunch in Manhattan. At 7:30 that morning, an unknown person rang the apartment building's security buzzer and Brazell went down to meet him. According to other witnesses, Brazell met a man outside his Brooklyn apartment and the two men entered the subway together at the Gates Avenue station. Witnesses believe the two exited at the Nostrand Avenue station in Bedford–Stuyvesant a short time later. Brazell was never seen alive again.

Smail Tulja was a Montenegrin who was convicted in a Montenegro court, in July 2010, for the 1990 murder of Mary Beal in New York City. Beal went missing on September 15, 1990, and was found three weeks later in two garbage bags. She had been decapitated and dismembered.

The West Mesa Murders are the killings of eleven women whose remains were found buried in 2009 in the desert on the West Mesa of Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States. The Gilgo Beach serial killings were a series of murders spanning from the early 1990s until 2011. Many of the victims' remains were found over a period of months in 2010 and 2011 during a police search of the area along Ocean Parkway, near the remote beach towns of Gilgo and Oak Beach in Suffolk County, New York. The search was prompted by the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert, who, like many of the known victims, was a sex worker who advertised on Craigslist. The B1 Butcher is an unidentified serial killer in Namibia. The B1 Butcher murdered at least five women between 2005 and 2007, with all murders related to the National Road B1.

The Lewis–Clark Valley murders refer to a cluster of unsolved murders and disappearances that occurred in the Lewiston-Clarkston metropolitan area of northern Idaho between 1979 and 1982. Law enforcement investigators have identified four victims and possibly a fifth that are connected to a single suspect.

Jorge Ignacio Palma, also known as The Butcher, is a murderer, rapist and serial killer responsible for the murders of three women in Spain. In November 2019, he confessed to murdering and dismembering Marta Calvo. In July 2022 he was found guilty on all counts.

His modus operandi consisted of luring the men from piano bars in Manhattan, murdering and dismembering them at an unknown location, and dumping their bodies in garbage bags along highways in New Jersey.

The severed leg killer is the moniker of an unidentified serial killer who murdered eight people in Turkey. Between 2000 and 2001, severed legs belonging to six females and two males were found in various districts of Istanbul. Only one of the victims has been identified, and the statute of limitations on the case expired in 2021.
